The Art of Masks with Eric Bornstein
ArtTalks: The Art of Masks
November 17 at 7:00 pm
The Umbrella Community Arts Center, 40 Stow StreetConcord, MA 01742
Masks are one of the most ancient creative forms, from Noh masks in Japan to commedia dell’arte in Italy to traditional Native American masks across the continent, this art form is used to facilitate creative expression. From November 4-19, you’ll be able to see one example of masks in use during The Umbrella’s production of Equus.
At this month’s ArtTalk, the creative team of Equus will be joined by mask makers from around the region in an interactive panel. We’ll be discussing what it means to wear art, how that affects the way it’s made, and how masks are utilized in different venues.
Panelists:
Eric Bornstein, Behind the Mask, MASK/PUPPET DESIGNER
Award-winning Behind the Mask Studio has created masks/puppets for many companies, including Boston Ballet (Nutcracker), Boston Lyric Opera (Madama Butterfly), Boston MFA, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Company One (Shockheaded Peter [2016 IRNE award-winner for Best Puppetry Design]), Underground Railway Theater (Galileo), Fava Opera (Les Sortileges D'enfants [Paris]), Liars & Believers (Le Cabaret Grim, Best Production Design winner, New York Musical Theater Festival 2014), Gamm Theatre, and Bethesda Softworks (Versailles, Paris). Local and national media have described Eric as “Boston’s preeminent mask maker”…”a man of many talents” and his masks as “phantasmagoric,” “magnificent,” “Stunning, finely crafted…first-rate,” “eerie/enchanting,” “masterful,” and “gorgeous.”

Mandorla Music presents DUO DUO: Vanessa Morris/Scott Sandvik and James Merenda/Jon Dreyer, Sat 11/5 at Third Life Studio
Mandorla Music presents
D U O D U O: Vanessa Morris & Scott Sandvik and James Merenda & Jon Dreyer
Saturday, November 5th, 8pm
Third Life Studio, 33 Union Square, Somerville
Advance tickets, $15, are available here. Join the FB event & help spread the word!
Vanessa Morris was trained as a classical pianist before branching into jazz at the Oberlin Conservatory and, later, New England Conservatory, where she met duo partner, guitarist Scott Sandvik. Their duo project grew out of in depth study of African-American folklore. Their improvisations were based on ear transcriptions of field-recorded a cappella black folk singing that included surge style hymns, spirituals, hollers and blues. Recently the Morris/Sandvik Duo's repertoire has widened to include the music of such composers as Carla Bley, Bert Bacharach and Joao Gilberto.
They'll split the bill with another great duo, longtime collaborators James Merenda on piano and/or alto saxophone and bassist Jon Dreyer. James and Jon have played a couple packed Mandorla shows in a trio setting in the past & I'm thrilled to welcome them as a duo. The two have played for years both in duo and trio "non-standard standards" formats and in the larger ensemble Ticklejuice, which showcases Merenda's adventurous composition.

Creatives Count Survey. Please respond and/or share by November 18!
Somerville Artists and Creative Workers:
You are a vital part of our region's vibrancy, but are often undercounted - and underserved - because of the fluid nature of your work life. You can help change that!
Go to www.nefa.org/creativescount for more info and links to the survey in English, Spanish, and Chinese. Deadline: November 18, 2016.
Answer questions about your jobs, income, and career priorities
Be entered into a drawing to win a $25 gift card
Count yourself in...and encourage creatives in your networks to do the same
The survey should take 20-30 minutes to complete, because it is designed to capture the complexity of creative work - please take this opportunity to convey how much you count. Help advocates, service providers, and other stakeholders ensure that creative workers are better served by employment analysis, program planning, and advocacy strategies.
Analysis of your responses will be included in a report on the whole creative sector in New England that will be released in spring, 2017.

Deadline Only a Week Away - Grants for Community Curators
November 4th is the deadline for the grant program to support Community Curators launching an exhibit at the Somerville Museum. Shows are for the 2017 and 2018 seasons and up to four proposals may be accepted for the $2500 awards.
Proposals can be on any topic but preference is given to exhibits that incorporate a connection to the city of Somerville, past, present or future, and serve to enhance understanding and appreciation of the history, arts and culture of the city. The Museum’s trustees seek exhibits that foster dialogue among local artists, historians and educators and the broader community to enrich understanding and lifelong learning. All submissions are welcome and will be judged on the quality of the proposal. Selected community curators will receive a seed grant of $2,500 and exhibit space at the museum.
Detailed information can be found on the Somerville Museum website at www.somervillemuseum.org.

Join Historic Preservation Commission for Tours of Milk Row Cemetery, Prospect Hill Tower
Community Note: Join Historic Preservation Commission for Tours of Milk Row Cemetery, Prospect Hill Tower
Wondering about the residents of this historic Milk Row Cemetery dating back to 1804? Join the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission on Sunday, November 6, from 2 to 4 p.m., for the final public opening of 2016. Due to its fragile condition, the site is often closed to the public, except by appointment, or during regular openings during the seasonal months. At those times, volunteer docents, often dressed in historic period clothing, will help you learn a little about the buried residents, from as far back as Revolutionary times, and their history within the community, once known as "Beyond the Neck.” The grounds may also be appreciated as a peaceful retreat for reading and contemplation.
Have you ever wondered about the view from the top of the Prospect Hill Tower? Come and see it for yourself! Thanks to recent renovations through the Community Preservation Act, residents can take docent-guided tours to the top on select dates. Remaining dates for 2016 are:
- Thursday, November 4, 4 – 5:30 p.m.
- Saturday, November 12, noon – 2 p.m.
(Inclement weather cancels)
The tower was built in 1903 to honor the troops who camped atop the hill during both the Revolutionary War and Civil War. It was designated as a Local Historic District in 1985 and was just recently re-stabilized through a 2015 Somerville CPA grant.
For more information on either program, contact Brandon Wilson at 617-625-6600 ext. 2532, or BWilson@somervillema.gov.

Last Chance to Sign up for Bites and Bruises - A Halloween Special
Don't miss out on this great class!
Come learn essential skills to create your owl special effects makeup! In the spirit of Halloween, we will be creating a zombie look involving bruises, scars, and rotting skin effects that can be used in many different Halloween looks.
Bite/ face cut: We will construct a bite on arm or neck from scar wax. You will learn how to apply wax to skin, molding it into the desired shape and tooth indents, and painting and adding blood. A cut or scratch may be added to the face.
Veins and decay: We will paint on top of the elements we added with wax. We will contour to create deep shadows under the eyes, emaciated cheeks and tendons to the neck, and will discolor the face with veins and the look of decaying skin.
In the last portion of the class, depending on how much time remains, you can continue to work with and explore the materials and skills we learned. You are encouraged to bring ideas of Halloween makeup you'd like to do and the instructor can demo or talk through how to go about bringing those ideas to life.
About the instructor: Sylvia Sword studies Theater at the University of Vermont where she started her journey into the world of theatrical makeup. She is an actor, teacher, and clown in the Boston area and she pursues makeup as an independent artist.

West Branch Library Renovation Community Meeting
Dear Colleagues, There is a Community Meeting scheduled for 6:30pm-8:30pm, on Mon Nov 14th at the Community Baptist Church, 31 College Ave.
The purpose of the meeting is to present two designs for the West Branch library renovation: 1) to renovate and make the building accessible; and 2) to renovate, make the building accessible and add meeting rooms, an auditorium and a maker space.
We could use your help in spreading the word, and if possible, your participation at the meeting to advocate on behalf of the second option, which would provide the community much-needed meeting spaces, both small and large, and a space for residents, including students, to learn, innovate and create high and low tech projects, free of charge. The proposed auditorium would also be available after-hours, by the community for meetings, performances, and private events.
Thanks for your consideration and your support!

Grants for Community Curators - Info Session 10/21
Do you have a Somerville story to tell? Do you have a collection of items the world should see that speaks to our community’s past, present or future? Since 1988 the Somerville Museum has hosted exhibits curated by community members and they’re seeking applicants for their 2017 and 2018 seasons.
Proposals can be on any topic but preference is given to exhibits that incorporate a connection to the city of Somerville, past, present or future, and serve to enhance understanding and appreciation of the history, arts and culture of the city. All submissions are welcome and will be judged on the quality of the proposal. Selected community curators will receive a seed grant of $2,500 and exhibit space at the museum.
An information session is planned for Friday, October 21, 2016 at 6 pm at the Somerville Museum for those interested in learning more about the opportunity. The deadline for applications is November 4, 2016.
Over the years Somerville Museum shows have focused on the city’s past, such as “The Lost Theatres of Somerville” that explored the fourteen cinemas that once defined its Squares and “Lifting the Veil” about the 1834 burning of the Ursuline convent in what is now East Somerville. Others have focused on the community’s diverse people and cultures, such as “Three Paths to Italy,” “Immigrant City” and “From Yucuaiquín to Somerville.” Shows centered on the work of local artists such as the recent photography show “Union Square at Work” by Charan Devereaux have both documented the contemporary city and explored its future.
The Museum’s trustees seek exhibits that foster dialogue among local artists, historians and educators and the broader community to enrich understanding and lifelong learning. Proposals can be on any topic but preference is given to exhibits that incorporate a connection to the city of Somerville, past or present. Creative use of artifacts, engaging exhibit design and innovative programming that engage diverse audiences are all important. Collaboration with other artists, scholars and like-minded local organizations are encouraged but not required. Selected exhibits must be installed by the applicant within two years of receiving the award.
For more information contact Mimi Graney at mimi@relishmgmt.com..
Detailed information can be found on the Somerville Museum website at www.somervillemuseum.org.

Revolutionary Snake Ensemble: "I Want That Sound!" record release party. With opening act Soggy Po' Boys followed by special guest Charles Coe, plus others, sitting in with RSE. Friday, November 4, 9:00 pm (doors open at 8:00 pm). Tickets: $15 at door, $10 in advance. ONCE Ballroom, 156 Highland Ave., Somerville 02143. For tickets and information: www.ONCEsomerville.com, 617-285-0167.
Jazz has been declared "dead" innumerable times since saxophonist Ken Field formed the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble (RSE) in 1990. The band obviously didn’t get the memo! In fact, it’s ironic that over the years rather than playing a "Second Line" dirge for jazz’s funeral, the horn-heavy sextet – inspired by the New Orleans brass band tradition – has been developing and cultivating a distinct sound critics and audiences alike hail for invigorating an illustrious musical heritage with fresh ideas, wit, and spunk while in the process attracting new and younger audiences to the music. In fact, RSE has been at the forefront of the jazz renaissance The Guardian (UK) newspaper recently touted as a "new golden age."
Over more than a quarter century of touring and performing in settings ranging from clubs and concert halls to festival and parades, RSE has been evolving and refining a unique sound that incorporates post-bop and avant jazz influences without ever losing its allegiance to the groove and the party spirit of NOLA.
I Want That Sound!, RSE’s fourth album (street release date Oct. 28, 2016), celebrates the band’s collective experience by providing a snapshot of where and what it is today – a tight, funky, fun, and heady unit that’s transgenerational in its appeal and whose music resonates with listeners on melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic levels. I Want That Sound! is also the first in the band’s discography to feature all original material, with the opening track "Slippery When Wet" composed by New Orleans drummer Chris Lacinak, who has joined RSE on several occasions during the band's NOLA excursions. The other compositions on the album are all penned by Field: "Discoveries", "Higgins Hollow," "Nature", "I Want That Sound!," "Just Walk Closer," "Roohane", and "John’s Jailhouse Blues."
The personnel heard on the album is Field’s current working band and the RSE line-up that has played continuously together the longest. RSE includes Field on alto sax, along with Tom Hall on tenor sax (Club d’Elf, Your Neighborhood Sax Quartet), Dave Harris on trombone (Debo Band, David Byrne, JCA Orchestra), Jerry Sabatini on trumpet (Sonic Explorers, Makanda Project, Eric Hofbauer Quintet), Blake Newman on bass (David Murray, Duke Robillard, Butch Morris), and Phil Neighbors on drums (The Coots, Funky White Honkies). Further information on Ken Field and RSE can be found at www.KenField.org, www.RevolutionarySnakeEnsemble.org, and www.facebook.com/RevolutionarySnakeEnsemble.
The evening's party time will kick off with a set by the fabulous New Hampshire-based New Orleans-inspired Soggy Po' Boys, guaranteeing to "bring the heat!" (Saucebox Music News). Formed in 2012 during Mardi Gras time New Hampshire style, the band is made up of Eric Klaxton (sax), Zach Lange (trumpet), Nick Mainella (sax). Mike Effenberger (piano), Stu Dias (guitar, vocals), Brett Gallo (drums), and Nicholas Phaneuf (bass). Visit www.SoggyPoBoys.com for more background info.
Highly acclaimed Cambridge poet and jazz vocalist Charles Coe, as well as a few other special guests, will join RSE during their set. Coe’s poetry and prose has appeared in numerous journals and magazines, and his poems have been set to music by composers Julia Carey, Beth Denisch and Robert Moran. Coe, in addition to his work as a writer, has an extensive background as a jazz vocalist and has performed and recorded with numerous musicians throughout New England.

Kickstarting the Parts and Crafts Monthly Make-It!
Parts and Crafts Monthly Make-It!
A box of cool projects every month, shipped directly from our shop to your mailbox. Open it, build it, take it apart, make something!
Support our Kickstarter: Sign up today!
The Monthly Make-It is a monthly kit subscription program. Each kit will contain all the parts you need to complete a number of projects each month -- lightsabers, catapults, motorcars, kaleidoscopes, and more! Each month we'll ship a new box of projects, and each month you’ll be able to open it and build something awesome.
Help us get the word out!
Sign up for a kit, sponsor a workshop, donate $25 to show your support, and tell everyone you know about why you think this is worth supporting! Starting TODAY until November 15, please help us get the word out -- to friends, family, colleagues, media connections, wealthy patrons, social media moguls -- anyone interested in tech, parenting, the arts, education who might be excited about supporting this new initiative.
About Parts and Crafts
Parts and Crafts is a kid makerspace and community workshop in Somerville MA. Through our programs - camp, school alternative, afterschool, and open shop - we try to ensure that all of the kids in our community have access to the tools, resources, and expertise they need to turn their ideas into real things. We've spent the last seven years developing a range of simple, easy-to-build projects, and we're taking some of our favorites and turning them into kits that you can put together at home, at your kitchen table, or in your classroom.
Help keep our programs accessible and affordable
Building off last year’s One Lightsaber Per Child Project, The Monthly Make-It is a way to fund our outreach and accessibility efforts. Our workshop is located in a city literally up the street from some of the biggest names in tech -- Google, Microsoft, MIT -- but where 64% of kids are eligible for free and reduced lunch. Kit sales directly support work with local partner organizations -- the Welcome Project, Public Lab, Somerville Community Corporation, Freedom Connexion, Somerville Public Schools, and others. Above all, they fund sliding scale and scholarships, which are an essential tool for keeping our programs affordable and accessible for families in our wider community.
An open-source library of awesome projects
Our goal is to use these kits to build an open-source library of cool things to make and do. Kits will include real-world components with clear, easy-to-follow instructions. To help you out, we will be documenting the design and manufacturing process for each kit and making the following things available under a Creative Commons ShareAlike License:
How to build it -- both as a document and as an instructional video
How it works -- a brief explanation of concepts behind the projects
Where/how you can get the parts in the kit
How to manufacture any custom pieces
Any other important notes we have on the design
We hope that, by making the kits entirely open-source, educators and youth community leaders will be able to use our kits as a springboard for developing affordable classroom-scale projects at any budget.
Thank you for your support!
We are beyond excited about this project, but we can’t do it without you. The Monthly Make-It will help us keep our workshop open, keep our projects accessible, and help us grow our online resources to better support makers just like you. We hope you'll be a part of it!

ARENA
What are the faces of modern American politics?
Come election year, the fans fill hockey rinks and high school gyms. True believers with a dose of fanaticism, they pump the air, they chant "USA USA!," they grab selfies and stomp the floor.
Based on news photos of the crowds at campaign events, these photos use models to recreate the fans' behavior, isolating it under bright studio lights. We can survey their colorful getups, look them in the eye for a trace of craziness, and feel their mixture of exhilaration and earnestness.
Their enthusiasm can be contagious, and a little bit frightening.

MEMBER SOUGHT FOR COMMUNITY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE - release
MEMBER SOUGHT FOR
COMMUNITY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE
Residents encouraged to apply; Committee to identify funding priorities for ~$2 million per year in open space, affordable housing and historic preservation projects
SOMERVILLE – Do you have a passion for parks, affordable housing, and historic preservation? The City of Somerville wants your help and is now accepting applications for one public position on the Community Preservation Committee, which oversees the selection of projects to be recommended for funding by an estimated $2 million in annual Community Preservation Act (CPA) revenues. Residents are encouraged to apply and applications must be submitted by October 21, 2016.
Somerville voters overwhelmingly approved adoption of the CPA in November 2012. Since then, $9.8 million has been allocated for 31 projects across the four areas that CPA can fund: open space and outdoor recreation, affordable housing, and historic preservation. The Community Preservation Committee, required by the CPA, is tasked with evaluating Somerville’s needs in those three specific areas and making recommendations to the Board of Alderman on how CPA funding should be spent.
The committee consists of nine volunteers, including four members from the general public and a member from each of the following bodies: the Planning Board, the Conservation Commission, the Historical Preservation Commission, the Parks and Open Space Department, and the Housing Authority. The City is currently looking to fill the one general public position, to replace an outgoing member. The successful candidate will complete the outgoing member’s term, which will end on December 31, 2017, and will have the option to continue on for a second three-year term. To ensure the most qualified applicants are selected, Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone has formed a review committee of City experts and community members to review applications, conduct interviews, and consider public feedback on candidates. From the group of applicants, they will nominate candidates for appointment for the Mayor to review. The Mayor will then submit candidate finalists to the Board of Aldermen for approval.
“We are fortunate as a community to have so many passionate residents willing to share their expertise and time to continually make our city better. Over the last three years, the Community Preservation Committee has leveraged these strengths to guide CPA funds towards the best possible uses,” Mayor Curtatone said. “The new member of the Community Preservation Committee will contribute to the valuable work of ensuring that CPA funds are allocated to uses that best serve the needs and priorities of our community.”
The CPC meets monthly on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. When the CPC is considering applications for funding, it is possible that additional meetings will be held.
Being an effective committee member will require that you:
· Familiarize yourself with Somerville’s affordable housing, historic preservation, and open space/outdoor recreation policies and needs
· Familiarize yourself with the law (Community Preservation Act, MGL Chapter 44B) that governs the committee
· Attend meetings regularly
· Foster good relations with other city departments, boards, and commissions
· Listen to and be responsive to community feedback
· Use fairness and objectivity when making decisions
The review committee is seeking candidates who:
· Are supportive of all three programmatic areas of the CPA: affordable housing, historic preservation, and open space and outdoor recreation AND
· Have demonstrated a commitment to at least one of these areas.
In addition, the goal of the review committee is to create a balanced committee that includes members who:
· Come from diverse demographic backgrounds
· Represent all geographic areas of the City
· Have financial expertise
· Have project management experience
HOW TO APPLY:
Interested residents should complete the application available on the City’s website at: http://www.somervillema.gov/node/1013291 or outside the SomerStat Office at City Hall, 93 Highland Ave. Completed applications should be sent to employment_opportunities@somervillema.gov by October 21, 2016. All residents are welcome to apply. No nomination is required to submit an application. This is a volunteer position.
Please note that if you choose to apply for the Community Preservation Committee, your name and a portion of your application (a brief summary describing why you are a qualified candidate) will be posted on the city website for public review between October 31st and November 11th. All community members are invited to provide feedback on candidates during this time.

Fort Point Swimmers Installation
Dear Friends, We installed our new public art installation in Fort Point Channel's Art Basin yesterday! SOS (Safety Orange Swimmers) is now unveiled in the run up to Fort Point Open Studios which happens next weekend,October 14th-16th! A group of safety orange colored figures float in the Fort Point Channel Basin with inner tubes. The Swimmers relate the Channel to the seas crossed by those in search of shelter, freedom, prosperity and safety and they invoke Boston's long history of welcoming immigrants. Each figure represents nearly 1 million of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees' estimated 21.3 million refugees in the world today. We hope you will have a chance to visit the Swimmers during Open Studios or before they leave the area in early December. Here is a map to help you find them: You can find us newly on social media here:Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Also, take a look at our new website and please check back for project updates. If you post pictures to social media when you visit the installation, please tag them with #SOSswimmers, @SOSswimmersFPAC, @Fortpointarts. You can find more information at Boston Magazine.
