SOMERVILLE OPENAIR CIRCUS FUNDRAISER - November 8, 2012

I'd like to invite you to a delicious way to support one of our unique community groups here in Somerville. The OPENAIR Circus has been teaching Somerville's youth various circus skills as a way to instill an appreciation for arts and community for over 25 years. We've kept our costs low (now $20/child or $30/family for a 6 week program that runs 9 hours per week) and the quality of our teachers high by relying on volunteers and the generosity of our community, but we need your help too. We're holding a fundraiser at Flatbread Pizza in Davis Sq. on Nov 8th from 5pm-11:30pm. During this time, any pizza purchased, for dine-in or take-out, will help us with our cause. For every small pizza purchased, Flatbread will donate $1.75, for every large, $3.50. We'll also hold a raffle and/or silent auction in the front hall and have fresh baked goods available for sale. Please consider coming out and supporting one of Somerville's long-time great establishments by eating some great pizza.

Place went to the House of Blues in Cambridge, MA to have lunch with a belly dancer. On stage was acoustic guitarist Bertrand Laurence, paying homage to the root music of Mississippi, New Orleans, and Chicago. Sensing a connection, J asked to sit in and the Jellyrollers were born. Strictly acoustic, they now include Mickey Bones on drums and things, Rob Rudin on drums and spoons, Robbie Phillips on wombat bass and jaw harp and Mark Chênevert on clarinet. They have played at the Boston Blues Festival and the Lincoln Center (NYC). “Both high-spirited and heart-felt, the Jellyrollers have a filling for the hole in your soul” -- Brett Milano, music critic 3pm: Agachiko Agachiko is a 7 piece jazz ensemble populated by veteran musicians who have pared their playing down to the essentials, all energy focused on bringing the emotional reality of the songs to life. Agachiko’s repertoire ranges from originals to Nina Simone-inspired material, classic torch songs and even show tunes given an earthy reality by Gabrielle Agachiko’s no-nonsense singing. She is joined by Russ Gershon on tenor sax, Scott Getchell on trumpet, Ken Field on flute, Sam Davis on guitar, Blake Newman on acoustic bass, and Phil Neighbors on drums.” www.agachicko.wordpress.com 4pm: The Tim Gartland Group The ‘triple threat’ (harmonica player, vocalist & songwriter) contemporary blues man, Tim Gartland’s history of musical growth and development has been guided by the blues. He has been deeply influenced by the “greats” – Little Walter for his harp playing, Ray Charles for his interpretation of a song, and Willie Dixon for his song writing. His band features seasoned professionals, including Rusty Scott on keyboards, Chris Rival on guitar, Paul Justice on bass and Forrest Pagent on drums. 5pm: Jeremy Lyons Trio Jeremy Lyons plays in and with American music traditions. He moved to the Boston area from New Orleans in 2005, where he worked as a musician since 1992, first as a street performer, then in clubs with The Deltabilly Boys. Jeremy specializes in slide guitar and fast finger-picking; his Trio features “Washtub” Robbie Phillips on (homemade) bass diddley bow and Jeff Allison on drums. Lyons’ “Deltabilly” is a blend of several styles, including Delta Blues, Surf Guitar, Rockabilly and Western Swing. BOSTON RED SOX INSPIRED ART EXHIBITION - September 27 - October 20, 2012

Fenway Park, Red Sox history celebrated with art

By Johanna Kaiser, Town Correspondent
While Red Sox fans might be in the dumps this season, baseball lovers have a chance to recall better years at a local art exhibit honoring 100 years of Fenway Park.
Take Me Out To The Ball Game: Celebrating Fenway@100,”an exhibit at the Bunker Hill Community College Art Gallery, is a multimedia salute to baseball, the Red Sox, and Fenway Park by more than 28 artists and collectors—most of them from New England.
The exhibit, on display through Oct. 20, will feature oil paintings, quilts, prints, watercolors, drawings, and cartoons, and display black and white photographs of the Red Sox from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s taken by local news photographer Laban H. Whittaker.
That display includes 25 images that have never before been shown in a gallery.
Other works at the exhibit include paintings by Justyn Farano, the official artist for the Ted Williams Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida; photographs of the 2004 championship rolling rally by Boston Globe photographer Bill Brett; and impressionistic works of crowds on Yawkey Way by Chelsea painter Arnie Casavant.
Artists Lou Jones, John Kennard, Loretta Feeney, Elaine Ostrander, Mara Aspinall, Michael McCauley also have art on display.
“This is no doubt the definitive Fenway @100 exhibit of the season,” said art gallery director Laura Montgomery. “It is a hit right out of the park.”
A baseball inspired reception at the gallery on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. will feature Fenway fare and music, including a sing-along performance of “Take Me Out To The Ball Game” and “Sweet Caroline” by the official Red Sox organist Josh Kantor and a visit from Wally the Green Monster!

Bunker Hill Community College Art Gallery is free and open to the public-
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tues. & Thrs. 10 a.m. to 7p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The most wicked adversaries of our imagination return again and again—Buffy the Vampire Slayer's The Master, Mayor Richard Wilkins III, Glory, The First; Dr. Who's the Daleks, the Cybermen, Bad Wolf; Harry Potter's He Who Must Not Be Named; and Battlestar Galactica's "all this has happened before, and all this will happen again." Never mind the classic agents of nightmares—the Devil, the Grim Reaper, the Undead, and untold more. And while our mayor may not ascend into an actual enormous snake, and our lovers do not usually turn to soulless vampires bent on destroying the world via demon-resurrection, and our best friend's eyes don't normally flick to black due to dark magic, there is some authenticity in those images.

In a land not so far away, where everything seems quite big and terribly bad, The Nave Gallery asked artists to submit work that mirrored their vision of The BIG BAD. Whether it be the repo man, banks, politicians, the ex, the evil step-parent, the monster in the closet, the tick-tock of a bad heart—The BIG BAD explores the true representations of the foes that wreck our homes, our health, our families, our childhoods. The bump in the dark of night, the shadow lurking in the corner of your eye, those things that haunt us even if we've buried it four times over, The BIG BAD aspires to show that the real-world adversaries threatening our ruin are close companions to the phantoms locked in our imaginations.

The Community Path extension is about 2 miles as-the-crow flies, but our tour route will be more like 3 miles as-the-people-go because we need cannot travel directly along the GLX rail corridor, where the CPX will (eventually) be. Much of the route that we'll travel for the tour is ADA accessible, though unfortunately, not all sections (especially by Gilman Square), though we can meet up with anyone who needs to at the next section. Hope to see you there! CRYSTAL SINGING BOWLS CONCERT - October 12, 2012

Third Life Studio is delighted to welcome Joan Caplan and the deeply healing, meditative sounds of her Crystal Singing Bowls for an evening of reflection and contemplation. Please join us! Contemplative Adventures: Crystal Singing Bowl Meditation with Joan Caplan Friday, October 12 7:30-9pm What a joy it is at the end of the week to relax, reduce our stress, let go of our tension and feel rejuvenated mentally, emotionally, and spiritually! The crystal singing bowls release pure, clear sounds which are calming, soothing, and nurturing. They are often called 'healing bowls'. The beautiful vibrations and cascading tranquility of their sound help us to center our energy, breathe more deeply, soften our muscles, and refresh our mood. The meditative healing of the crystal singing bowls resonates, expands and creates harmony. All the listener has to do is listen. During this session Joan will play the crystal singing bowls while you rest and relax. As you relax, your inward journey may begin to unfold, and you are invited to allow yourself to enter that internal balanced healing environment where you can experience the still point where deep meditation, relaxation, and rejuvenation take place. There will be time for sharing afterwards , if you wish, and for questions. Since retiring from her twenty-year psychotherapy private practice in order to bring musical sound into the center of her life, Joan has been immersed in studying, performing, and sharing the joy of music as an instrument of healing. Her experience as a therapist and musician, as well as her deep mindfulness, inspire her offering of the singing bowls. She creates a meditative atmosphere and is very sensitive to the needs and responses of the individuals listening. $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Advance registration is strongly encouraged; details provided upon registration. To register, please make check payable to Joan Caplan and mail to: Joan Caplan, 146 Walnut St, Newton, MA 02460. It features both film and digital photography by yours truly, with an unusual number of landscapes (though they may be more accurately be described as skyscapes). Lee FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Washington Street Art Center, 321 Washington Street Somerville, MA 02143 The Washington Street Art Center Presents: Lee Kilpatrick's Splendid Isolation: Late Summer in Northern Maine Saturdays, October 6th – 27th, 2012 OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, October 12, 2012, 7–10pm ON VIEW: October 6–27, Saturdays 12-4 and by appointment CONTACT: gallery321@washingtonst.org For high-resolution photos and/or interviews, the press should contact Lee Kilpatrick at leekil@rcn.com. www.Washingtonst.org www.leekilpatrick.com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Photographer Lee Kilpatrick explores the “golden hour” in Splendid Isolation: Late Summer in Northern Maine at WSAC in October September 27, 2012 Somerville, MA – In Splendid Isolation: Late Summer in Northern Maine, photographer Lee Kilpatrick examines the remote beauty of his native land. Through images of fields and skies captured at the “golden hour” before sunset, and of people alone and together, the artist invites the viewer to explore the farming region of Aroostook County. “It’s the type of place most people never experience – you wouldn’t necessarily have a reason to go there,” says Kilpatrick. “Maine is best known for its coast and its wilderness, and the farming areas in between are less appreciated.” During its heyday in the early 1900s, Aroostook County was the number one supplier of potatoes for the nation. While farming has declined from this peak, schools still close for the annual potato harvest – 65% of which now turns into French fries. All photos were taken in August 2012. An unfinished church sits in a dirt lot; two bright red Maine hot dogs recline on a mound of baked beans; a tiny house’s windows glow against the approaching night. A woman sits alone by a sunny window; light shines through bottles of blue windshield fluid stacked at a gas station; and heavy blue and orange clouds reflect off a damp rural road. “Usually my photos are of people, with occasional landscapes,” says Kilpatrick. “But in this show a significant portion are landscapes. The focus is not nature, but rather the relationship between man-made structures and the much larger natural world.” Splendid Isolation is open to the public every Saturday in October from noon- 4pm at the Washington Street Art Center, 321 Washington Street in Somerville, MA. The opening reception is Friday, October 12th from 7-10pm. Directions are below and parking is free and plentiful. SOMERVILLE HONK ARTS FESTIVAL - October 5-9, 2012

The Somerville Arts Council and the Inside-OUT September Exhibit celebrates the artists of HONK ! In this month's exhibit, three photographers: Ben Greenberg, Mark Dannenhauer, & Jesse Edsell-Vetter, capture of the essence of the three day music street festival right in the heart of Davis Square. About HONK! The HONK! Festival is a revolutionary street spectacle of never-before-seen proportions that will converge for the seventh time in Davis Square, Somerville, MA, from Friday, October 5 through Monday, October 8, 2012! Across the country and around the world, a new type of street band is emerging. Acoustic and mobile, borrowing repertoire and inspiration from a diverse set of folk music traditions – New Orleans second line brass bands, European Klezmer, Balkan and Romani music, Brazilian Afro Bloc and Frevo traditions, as well as the passion and spirit of Mardi Gras and Carnival– these "honkers" all share a commitment to several core principles. Metaphorically speaking, they honk their horns for the same reasons motorists honk theirs: to arouse fellow travelers, to warn of danger, to celebrate milestones, and to just plain have fun.
