Call for graphic designer for Fluff Festival 2015 - DEADLINE July 6, 2015

I am seeking proposals for graphic designs for our upcoming Fluff Festival materials.

The Fluff Festival is a Union Square Main Streets event which is held each September in Union Square in Somerville. You can find more information about the Fluff Festival on the USMS website or the Fluff Facebook page.

We will need the designs for a suite of items, which may include, but not necessarily be limited to, a digital poster, postcards, streetpole banners, buttons, social media icons and promotional items, such as T-shirts, caps and tote bags.

Our theme this year is Fluff X - the X is to signify the fact that the Fluff Festival is 10 years old, but also will include some versions of Xtreme sports/games, and may use the X as marking the spot of Union Square or as X marks Union Square as the crossroads of Somerville. Examples of posters from previous Fluff festivals are below to give you a better idea of the style we are seeking.

While we are only able to pay a small stipend, we will widely acknowledge the work of our designer.

Proposals should include:
examples of former work,
information about experience designing for our full suite of items,
professional references,
your timeline, and
any drafts you might want to submit or propose for this year.

I will be reviewing proposals as they come in, as I am hoping to have the work done as soon as possible, but the cut off date for proposals is Monday, July 6.

If you have any questions, I would be happy to try and answer them any time before Thursday, June 25, when I am leaving for vacation. I return on July 7 and may not have email access while I am away.

Thanks and looking forward to hearing from you.

Esther

Open to anyone, playing brass, woodwinds or percussion, preferably with at least one year’s experience on a chosen instrument. Families are encouraged to apply. Cost for the two weeks is $160 ($80/ wk); family discounts and some scholarships may be available for students who need them.

Call for Fixers! Fixer Saturdays all summer at the Somerville Tool Library

This summer at the Somerville Tool Library/Parts and Crafts, I'll be running a series called Fixer Saturdays. From 1-3pm each Saturday, we'll invite the public in to work on/tinker with/fix/learn to fix/upcycle a specific kind of item. I am seeking folks with special interests or skills in specific repair areas to advise, volunteer, help, hang out, etc.

July 11: U Mad, Bra? - Bra repair! It's hard to think of an item that can suffer catastrophic failure so soon after purchase. I've recently learned techniques for fixing underwires and I will acquire some basic supplies and tools to repair most typical bra issues.

July 18th: Anachronistic Audio Repair Project #2 - the first AARP was in February and even though the weather was horrible, some great folks showed up. I am looking for people who are interested in repairing non-digital audio equipment like CD players, tape decks, boom boxes & transistor radios.

July 25th: Open Laptop Surgery - this is going to be an event about walking people through basic laptop repairs like replacing a keyboard or screen and helping folks get comfortable with opening up their laptops and seeing what's inside. I'm especially interested in anyone who has experience with Macs - I have the tools to open Apple devices, but it's not something I've done a lot.

Please email me at somervilletoollibrary@gmail.com if you are interested in helping out. Also, I haven't finalized the schedule for August and if there is something you really like to repair and would like to collaborate on an event like this, let me know!

JUST FYI: Pollinator Recovery Zone

The Somerville Arts Council awarded a Local Cultural Council Grant to Landscape Architects Anne Vaterlaus and Sarah Carrier in collaboration with Groundwork Somerville. Together, they designed and coordinated the installation of an environmental art piece called the Pollinator Recovery Zone . With the help of the GSW Green Team and community volunteers, 9 cedar posts were installed, supporting 13 wood boxes that are filled with bundles of reeds, each providing habitat for the native leaf cutter and mason bees –super pollinators of the bee world. The last phase of the project will surround the pollinator poles with a flower garden to be installed in Fall of 2015 and Spring of 2016.

I have an Epson 9890 printer at my studio on the second floor of 6 Vernon Street, Somerville. It's available for rent by the hour, which includes me as operator and Photoshop expert. We can proof together, and you can get exactly the prints you want. It prints from letter size up to 44"x96" on media including watercolor paper, canvas, vinyl, transparent film, plexiglas and aluminum. The 9890 uses archival pigment ink, rated up to 200 years before fading.
The rental is $75 an hour, with a two-hour minimum. The charge for prints is $6 s/f for ink, based on the size of the image (not media). Typically an artist can make 5-10 prints in a couple hours, for about $200. I will be there to help with preparing the images and working with the printer. Images should be brought in on a CD or thumbdrive - ideally final print size at 150 dpi. You can save them as hi-res jpgs. But I can help enlarge images and get them ready. (Don't bring in Raw images because they may not open.)

You can bring in your own media, either photo paper or other such as plain Somerset Velvet watercolor paper (which takes the ink really well). Other suitable papers include Stonehenge and some Arches, though not Rives BFK. (I also have a variety of media you can use at $6 s/f .) During your rental time, you may make any number of prints at any size.

Journeys in Sound event this Sunday afternoon - June 21, 2015 @4pm

Sunday, June 21, 2015
4pm
Arts at the Armory Cafe 191 Highland Ave. Somerville

Journeys in Sound presents
A Saxophone Solstice
feat. Sylvie Leys 4tet & Gaia Petrelli Wilmer Choro Quartet
Inline image
The date is summer solstice, as well as Father's Day, and to celebrate, two excellent saxophonists, one from France and one from Brazil will lead quartets to celebrate the start of the summer , a "saxophone solstice" if you will.

This will be French born saxophonist Sylvie Leys' second performance with Journeys in Sound. Last year she debuted with Otobus Trio which included two great musicians from Turkey, vocalist Burcu Güleç and pianist Eren Başbuğ. This time Sylvie will lead a 4tet. She has lately been under a heavy jazz influence, but there is still a taste of her folkloric background in her compositions. Between Parisian waltzes, East-European flavors and deep blues, the 4tet wish to make you travel all around the world.

Sylvie Leys 4tet are Sylvie Leys (tenor sax), Julian Velasco (vibraphone), Sahil Warsi (double bass), & Gustavo Hernandez (cajon).

Composers Saxophone Quartet at The Green Room - Saturday June 20th at 8pm

Saturday, June 20, is looking like a great day for jazz in Somerville. The SAC's Joe's Jazz & Blues Festival line-up looks incredible! For those looking to keep it going and move inside at the end of the day, I am delighted to present The Composers Saxophone Quartet at The Green Room (62 Bow St, Union Square) at 8pm that evening.

The quartet features Kathy Olson on baritone sax, Allan Chase on alto and soprano sax, Rick Stone on alto, and Sean Berry (who will appear with the great Makanda Project at Joe's earlier in the day) on tenor. So glad to have this foursome of stellar reeds players for the first show under the new Mandorla Music Series moniker (this is the series known until now as Jazz at The Green Room).

Leader Kathy Olson says, "Playing with other saxes without a rhythm section is like nothing else. You can hear everyone’s sound so clearly and the nuances are not missed. It’s like a living, breathing organism we bring to life as a group. The mission of the CSQ is to make the best of this special instrumentation. We perform original compositions and/or arrangements by our favorite local composers as well as by members of the ensemble. For jazz musicians it’s a different challenge to write something that will support an improvising soloist without a standard rhythm section."

Tix are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Advance tix and more info about the series are at www.mandorlamusic.net.

SAC and the Inside-OUT gallery featured June exhibit- Where Do We Come From

Where do we come from
-works by Rachel Eng and Kyle Macado

This month’s exhibit Where Do We Come From conceptualizes abstract notions surrounding questions which we are unable to rationalize, revealed through aninfinite reflection into the imagination.

About the Artists:
Rachel Eng
Rjeng.studio@gmail.com
www.racheljeng.com

Kyle Macado
Kyle.machado@gmail.com

SOMERVILLE, MA- As humans, we can choose to seek answers to the unknown or unattainable facts of life. We can place faith and trust in particular answers to questions we are unable to rationalize. Our thoughts can be fluid and subtle, shifting like waves breaking far out in the ocean. It can be unsettling and mysterious to allow one’s mind to not have a definite reasoning for something from the past or in the future. But there is a beauty in the boundlessness of the human mind; our imaginations are infinite, our neurons creating endless connections as long as we allow them to grow.

Two artists have created separate window installations in Davis Square, bound by the connected theme of limitlessness. Eng, who has a background in ceramics, has constructed a mirrored space with a lustrous ceramic landscape of microfauna and organisms that are familiar but foreign to our world. The installation changes at night to become an infinite realm of their limitless growth. Machado who studied English at Tufts University has created a space with a clear delineation of inside and out, using text that subtly reveals itself with each passerby.

This project was made possible with support from a grant from the Somerville Arts
Council and Mass Cultural Council.

The Opposite of People Theater Company Presents Ordinary Days: July 30-Aug 1 @8pm and Aug 1-2 @2pm

The Opposite of People, a new theater company in the greater Boston area, presents Ordinary Days. Performing July 30 - August 1 at 8pm and August 1 - 2 at 2pm at the Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown, MA.

From one of musical theatre's most exciting new composers, Adam Gwon, comes Ordinary Days, a refreshingly honest and funny musical about making real connections in New York City.

Ordinary Days tells the story of four young New Yorkers whose lives intersect as they search for fulfillment, happiness, love, a cab, and a lost notebook. Through a score of vibrant and memorable songs, Ordinary Days captures with stinging clarity that uneasy moment in youth when doubts begin to cloud hopes for a future of unlimited possibility, and the connections that, knowingly or not, help you find your way.

Ordinary Days stars Somerville resident Cristhian Mancinas-Garcia as Jason and is produced by Somerville resident Kristie Norris.

The Opposite of People (TOP) is a newly established theater company that is dedicated to bringing accessible, unconventional theater and little known shows to the Boston-area community.

Tickets are available for all performances through Brown Paper Tickets: http://theoppositeofpeople.brownpapertickets.com or on our website http://theoppositeofpeople.org

Make Big Photos! Open House: Sat, June 20, 9am to 1pm

Want to see what your photos look like really big?

On Saturday, June 20, from 9am to 1pm, I'm holding an Open House in my studio at 6 Vernon St in Somerville, 2nd floor. You can drop by, no reservation or RSVP necessary, and make a big print or two. My Epson 9890 can print any size up to 48" x 96".

Just bring your jpgs on a thumbdrive, about 150 dpi at print size. (I can also enlarge smaller jpgs.) We'll pop it into my Mac and make a print on the Epson 9890. I'll have some 24" wide Epson Luster photo paper loaded up and ready to go.
The only charge is $25 per print, up to 24" x 36". One print takes about 5 minutes. If you want to try something larger, it's $5 a square foot.

I hope you can drop by, and email me at gduehr@comcast.net if you have questions.

Best,

Gary Duehr
www.garyduehr.com

p.s. I also rent my Epson by the hour. Here are the details:

SAC and Earthworm Pie Puppet Theater present "Live Story Hive", Thursday June 11 @ 6pm

Earthworm Pie Puppet Theater
presents "Live Story Hive"
Location:
Chuckie Harris Park
3-17 Cross Street, East Somerville

Earthworm Pie will present 3 folk tales with environmental themes from around the world. These may include: An Abenaki Story from Maine “Gluscap and the Game Bag,” which shares a sympathetic but cautionary tale about using up too many of the Earth’s resources so that future generations will have none, “Gekko, gekko, gekko,” is an ecological Indonesian story about how everything is connected, and “Platypus, Pick a side!” is an Australian story about how all living things need each other and none is better than another. (Other stories with similar themes may
be exchanged instead of one of these depending on the size and type of audience.) This kind of puppetry asks audience members to done simple masks, hats and props to become the puppets and perform the action and music of the story while the narrator narrates.

Book Launch: Portrait of an Artist as a Young Poseur: 1974 to 1983 By Doug Holder July 9, 2015 7PM

Doug Holder will read from his lyrical memoir of Boston in the 1970s and early 1980s, Portrait of an Artist as a Young Poseur ( Big Table Publishing) The reading will take place at the Newton Writing and Publishing Center in Newton, Mass at 7PM. Sam Cornish, first Poet Laureate of Boston wrote of Holder:

“Doug Holder is a poet of the old city, the city of our fathers, of the 1950s and later. Mr. Holder writes poems like notes in a diary. I found myself struck by their economy, wit, and urban melancholy... He has a voice unlike that of any of his contemporaries. Holder is a poet of the street and coffeehouses, an observer of the everyday. He writes of old Marxists, security guards and his relationship to his deceased father—themes of the common life. I am drawn to these poems as I am to the poetry of Philip Levine and the prose of James T. Farrell. But Holder’s poetry is deeper than that. He sees the world not for what it is, but on his own terms. He is living in the poem rather than in poetry.”

Seeks Local Artists For Headquarters Wall Feature

Somerville, MA --- Union Square Station Associates (US2), the City of Somerville’s master developer partner for Union Square’s revitalization, today announced that it is seeking proposals from Somerville-based artists to design and install wall art inside the new US2 headquarters and coworking space which will soon open at 31 Union Square, the former home of Elegant Furniture.

“We want the new coworking space to reflect the vibrancy, diversity and potential that is Union Square,” said Greg Karczewski, president of US2. “Who better than someone steeped in Union Square’s arts culture to help bring that sense of community inside the walls of Union Square’s newest work space.”

In its Call for Submission, US2 says, “submissions may include murals, 2D wall art, and interactive features or exhibits.” The budget for the project is $2,000, offering a nice potential payday to one of Somerville’s many creative professionals.

Applications can be found at the US2 website at http://www.us2unionsquare.info/blog/2015/5/26/call-for-submissions and must be received no later than June 15 at 5:00pm. Applicants are instructed to email all information to Becca@US2UnionSquare.com.

US2 previously announced their new 2,500 square foot ground floor space will be staffed by a full-time US2 representative who will be available to field questions and provide general information about the Union Square revitalization. The space will serve as a headquarters, meeting space and a central hub for the recruitment of commercial tenants to fill space in the new development area and in the entire square.

William Walsh is a southern narrative poet in the tradition of James Dickey, David Bottoms, and Fred Chappell, whose most recent collection of poems, Lost In the White Ruins, was published in fall 2014. He is the author of five other books: Speak So I Shall Know Thee: Interviews with Southern Writers, The Ordinary Life of a Sculptor, The Conscience of My Other Being, Under the Rock Umbrella: Contemporary American Poets from 1951-1977, and David Bottoms: Critical Essays and Interviews.
It’s been said of this award-winning poet that he has “perfected the art of the run-on line, [which] demonstrates how the run-on forces the reader to entertain rival impressions at the same time.” As well, “his sense of loneliness comes across admirably as a Skeeter Davis song, [and] so does his obstinate faith in love. . . . Walsh seems to find redemption and comic-relief in his loses, like Arlo Guthrie’s self-portrait as the haphazard free-spirited protagonist. . . in his home-grown rough-hewn voice. Charging out of Walsh’s folksy chatter comes some locution as if grabbed quickly out of the Muse’s own inattentive hands. . . . Under all the masks and disguises, we are made aware that Walsh knows exactly who he is and what he is doing.”
His work has appeared in AWP Chronicle, Cimarron Review, Five Points, Flannery O’Connor Review, The Georgia Review, James Dickey Review, The Kenyon Review, Michigan Quarterly Review, North American Review, Poetry Daily, Poets & Writers, Rattle, Shenandoah, Slant, and Valparaiso Poetry Review. His interviews have been published in over fifty journals. They include, among others, Czeslaw Milosz, Joseph Brodsky, A.R. Ammons, Doris Betts, Pat Conroy, Harry Crews, James Dickey, Ariel Dorfman, Mark Doty, Rita Dove, Stephen Dunn, Eamon Grennan, Mary Hood, Edward Jones, Madison Jones, Donald Justice, Ursula Leguin, Andrew Lytle, Lee Smith, and Max Steele.

Paul Kroner: Portraits is on exhibit at the SCATV Gallery until June 25, 2015. Kroner describes himself as a mid - career painter. He creates spirited portraits. To date, his models have been friends, but he mentioned a desire to create a series of portraits of his neighbors. Kroner uses broad, sweeping strokes of color to create light and texture. He is a representational painter who has been known to create abstract work that has a “back in the day”, mod look/quality. The current exhibit also includes self portraits, one which he describes as a ‘selfie’. What is clear is that he is passionate about his work, and that his subjects enjoy working with him.
Paul Kroner talks about his work and painting techniques during his interview with ART AT SCATV Host Janet Cormier, Channel 3 on Tuesdays evening @ 6:30 PM for Somerville residents, or online at w.scatvsomerville.org/artgallery
