CALL FOR DANCE RELATED ART - January 31, 2014

Early mystics spoke of a cosmology in which our universe was originally, and is at base, infinite energetic chaos. They believed that chaos created us, and all life within our universe, in order to "know itself". A sense of form and pattern was born; the nameless became named. This can be both mimicked and reversed in the body of a dancer. A nameless, intangible energy can be expressed through lyrical pattern and form, or acute perception can be broken down into intuitive, chaotic movement. The Nave Gallery invites photographers, filmmakers and writers to explore this theme for Chaotic Forms, an exhibition celebrating the art of dance. Entry fee.

CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT
BIRD WALK
Sunday, December 15, 12:30 to 2:30 pm
Meeting place given upon registration

This year, for the first time, our December bird walk will coincide with the National Audubon Society’s 114th annual Christmas Bird Count. Fresh Pond is important to the CBC because it is the only location where several of the diving duck species are found. We will join tens of thousands of other birders throughout the Americas who identify and count all of the birds they see on one specific day in one area. Audubon and other organizations use data collected in this longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations - and to help guide conservation action. We will use a telescope to look at waterfowl on Fresh Pond, and binoculars to see other birds. Beginners are welcome. We have binoculars to lend and will show you how to use them.

SOMERVILLE PARTS AND CRAFTS EVENTS - November 2013

This weekend at Parts and Crafts, back-to-back workshops with two sets of our favorite people -- Jeff Delpapa, tinkerer extraordinaire, and the fine folks at the Public Lab for Open Science and Technology on water quality and data collection. Mark your calendar and come out for a weekend of building, playing, hacking, and tinkering with some of the finest nerds in Somerville!

*************************************************************************
SPECIAL EVENTS! (this week only)

Build a Rube Goldberg machine!

Saturday 11/23, 1-3 p.m.
$10-20 suggested, all are welcome

Parts and Crafts is pairing up with the New England Rubbish Deconstruction Society to offer a 3-session workshop in making excessively complicated contraptions out of junk! NERDS is notable for being the first U.S. team to compete in Scrapheap Challenge (i.e. Junkyard Wars). We’re psyched to have Jeff Del Papa back as our resident tinkerer extraordinaire to lead this workshop on wacky mechanisms and design.

RVSP

Water Quality Hackathon with the Public Lab!

Sunday 11/24, 12-6 pm (all day)
Cost: FREE, all are welcome

Like a barnraising but different! A day of hacking with the Public Lab for Open Science and Technology and other Boston-area citizen scientists. The general theme for this coming toolshed raising is water quality. While that topic is very large, it may yet exclude some people who might otherwise have something fun to talk about. Free association counts! Water quality is about water which makes up 45-75% of the human body which can be injured by air pollution which bonds lightly to water. So air pollution could, by free association, be worked in. Other topics might include: thermal sensing bits and bobs, water quality monitoring, Alewife wetlands, Plymouth plant monitoring, and more!

** Kids are welcome to join, but it will be materially different from, say, our open shop programs — a venue for sharing ongoing projects, rather than us running stuff. We’ll bring the pizza, you bring the projects. Hope you can make it out!

Eventbrite - Public Lab Toolshed Raising

AWESOME EVENTS THAT WE DO WITH SOME REGULARITY

Board Game Night!
Thursday, 11/21, 6-8 pm
Free / by donation

Fluxx, Magic, Hey that's my Fish, Settlers of Catan, and all manner of other awesome games. Bring your own or play one of ours. If you're planning to eat pizza, bring some dollars to throw into the tin, grab a slice, and meet some fun new people! Parents are welcome to stay or drop off, no experience necessary, all are welcome and invited to join!

Saturday Open Shop
Every Saturday, 12-2 pm
Free / by donation

Every Saturday we open up our shop, from 12:00 p.m. to 2 p.m. to families and other curious folks who want to come in, look around, and make something (or make something happen!) We’ll have a few projects around, and spend the afternoon building and hanging out together. People are encouraged to come to open shop with projects and ideas of their own that they’d like to work on and explore, but we’ll always have something in mind to get you started if you’re suffering from maker’s block.

Kids Street Band
Every Sunday, 3-5 pm
Free / by donation.

Kid's band is fantastic, fun, and FREE, so come join us and make some noise!
For those who aren't familiar, it's a kids style HONK! band that run every Sunday afternoon from 3-5 pm at Parts and Crafts, 577 Somerville Ave. No experience necessary (though if you have an instrument you should bring it along, otherwise you'll be stuck playing drums). Come by and make some music with us!

Questions on any of the above can be directed to contact@partsandcrafts.org.

SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR STAR DONORS!

It's been a month of plenty at Parts and Crafts! Extra special thanks to ROBIN and MARK for walking through our door two months ago and saying, "Hey! Uh, could you use a really nice stereo microscope" and then dropping off the nicest microscope I've ever seen in our space the following weekend. Also to SOLAR MIKE, who not only dropped off ALL the solar kits, but who's regularly followed up to see if we need help organizing and setting them up (they were a big hit at open shop last weekend). And lastly to TODD, who dropped off a whole set of speakers not yet unpacked, but sure to lead to some awesome projects.

Having a storefront means that many many people come by over the course of any given month to stop in, introduce themselves, drop off used computers or speakers or various outdated pieces of hardware, and hang out and chat a bit about the space. Donations are great because we not only get to use your stuff, but we get to meet YOU, the weird and wider set of folks who make up the larger Parts and Crafts community.

Thanks for thinking of us, and thanks for being a little part of our world!

All best, with affection,

the parts and crafts crew

Tour: Bulfinch, Benjamin, Parris and Bryant: A Lineage of West End Architecture

Saturday, Dec. 14th
11:00am - 12:30pm
Meet at St. Joseph's Church
Cost: $15 non-members/ $7 members

When the West End was torn down and redeveloped in the late 1950's as part of urban
renewal, a number of historically significant buildings were preserved. These buildings

SPECIMEN DAYS: PAINTINGS by SARAH LUBIN
@ SCATV Gallery
November 1, 2013 – January 2, 2014

SPECIMEN DAYS: PAINTINGS by Sarah Lubin will be on exhibit in the SCATV Gallery in November and December. Lubin works in oil, acrylic, water color. Her use of color, shadow and light bring her subjects to life and convey sense of anticipation.

Sarah Lubin’s interview with Janet Cormier, ART AT SCATV Host, airs on Tuesdays, 6:30 PM on Channel 3 or online.

SCATV Gallery is located at 90 Union Square, Somerville, MA. Gallery hours are Monday thru Thursday Noon – 10:00 PM, Friday & Saturday 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM and closed on Sundays and holidays

Somerville artists interested in appearing as a guest for ART AT SCATV and exhibiting in the SCATV Gallery should contact Janet Cormier, Art @SCATV Host and Curator, or Wendy Blom, Executive Director SCATV.

Meet and support local artists
Our Open Studios event is a great opportunity to talk with real working artists and to start or grow an art collection—there are works of all kinds for sale, in every price range.

Come exhibit with us
No money? No problem—this year Brickbottom will host the 2nd annual Reciprocity Stream open photo show, an event in which every visitor is invited to take a photo home with them for free as long as they leave a photo of their own in its place.

Somerville’s The Biscuit (at Washington and Beacon Streets, diagonally across from Dali) sets up a pastry and coffee bar in the Brickbottom lobby—need we say more?

All Ages, All Access

VISUAL ARTS SCREENING SERIES AT SOMERVILLE ARMORY - December 5, 2013

We're pleased to announce the next installment of f/Local: A Visual Arts Screening Series, taking place December 5th, 8 p.m. at The Center for Arts at the Armory in Somerville. We're currently seeking submissions from local visual artists, including but not limited to short films, music videos, photography portfolios, promo videos, TV show pilots, short films, and feature length films.

About f/Local:

With the constant progression of creative technology, the artist, more so than ever before, is able to connect with audiences without the previous confines of status or financial means. f/Local is a screening series celebrating this shift, providing a unique opportunity for the artist and audience to meet under the same roof. Our hope is to establish a venue where local visual artists can build new relationships with other artists, interact with their audiences outside the ambiguity of the net, and if nothing else, see their work on the big screen!

Submitting Work:

Please submit work on a USB drive, data CD or DVD by November 25th.
Mail to:
Attn: F-Stop Local
The Center for Arts at the Armory,
191 Highland Ave., Suite 1-A

NEWTON ART GALLERY EXHIBITION RECEPTION - November 15, 2013

Two Somerville artists, Resa Blatman and Ariel Freiberg, will be exhibiting their work alongside two Massachusetts artists, Susan Scott and Zsuzsanna Szegedi, at the New Art Center in Newton. The exhibit, The Country Between Us, is both a void and a presence, protest and creative explosion. This exhibition shatters painting, using that act as a political metaphor.

Please join us for food, fun, music, and art, at the opening reception: Friday, November 15th, 6-8:30pm.

SOMERVILLE ARTIST OF THE MONTH - November 2013

The Arts Council is glad to announce the November artist of the month: Abbie Barrett!!

Abbie Barrett & The Last Date have been featured regularly on WXRV The River, and in American Songwriter and Performing Songwriter magazines. She was Timberland’s artist of the month in November, 2011; her song “On the Range” was included in CMT’s Cool Album Cuts that same month. She attributes much of her songwriting style to Neil Young, though she draws on a wide range of influences. Musoscribe has this to say about “The Triples: Volume I”: “‘On the Range’ sounds like Ennio Morricone crossed with A Camp, and the winsome ‘Draw Me In’ sounds like an outtake from Pink Floyd’s ‘Obscured by Clouds.’”

To learn more about Abbie and her work, take a look at our interview here:

CAMBRIDGE ART ASSOCIATION EVENTS - November 8, 2013

This week, the Cambridge Art Association

http://www.cambridgeart.org

is pleased to present two brand new shows: The Irony of Movement: 3 Artists at the Kathryn Schultz Gallery, and A Closer Look: Five Visions at University Place Gallery.

http://www.cambridgeart.org/a-closer-look-five-visions/

These small group shows form part of the backbone of the CAA, allowing our artist members to curate a show, and express a unique vision. I couldn't be more excited to present these two show simultaneously, as they represent the diversity of artwork created by our incredibly talented artist members.

I hope you will join the artists in celebrating the opening of
The Irony of Movement THIS FRIDAY, November 8, from 5:30-7:30, and the opening of A Closer Look: Five Visions NEXT FRIDAY, November 15, from 6-8pm.

Thank you to Vladimir Barsukov, Jan Powell, and Tim Wilson (
Irony of Movement: Three Artists) and Daniel Kornrumpf, Elizabeth Kostojohn, Yair Melamed, Patricia Schappler, and Ann Strassman ( A Closer Look: Five Visions) for sharing their beautiful work with us this month!

Come visit, and enjoy the show!

SOMERVILLE MINI HOLIDAY MARKET SEEKS VENDORS - December 19, 2013

Relish, the pop up center for urban agriculture (www.relishurbanag.com) in Union Square, will host three Thursday evening mini-holiday gift markets in December - December 5, 12 and 19 - from 5 to 8 pm.

Five vendors will be invited to set up in the classroom that immediately adjoins the Relish store located on Sanborn Court in Union Square -- immediately behind The Independent and across the alley from Backbar.

We're seeking vendors to join us for one or more of the evenings. We're not charging a fee but will be selecting among applications to ensure a cohesive and strong mix of items for sale. Jewelry, knitwear, letterpress, and holiday crafts would all be ideal but we're open to other handicrafts as well.

Send a note of your interest along with a link or jpegs showing your work to:
Mimi Graney
mimi@relishurbanag.com

Vendors will be scheduled on a rolling basis.
