________________________________________________________________________________
As our season finale, we are planning a 100 person version of John Cages Variations III. We will set up shop in the large and beautiful space in the Somerville Armory. Filling every corner of the hall and the mezzanine, we will create pathways and multiple sitting areas among the performers. The audience will be invited to walk among the performers and to stop and observe for a while at different vantage points. The act of moving from place to place will create different mixes depending on proximity to the performer.

Tim Feeney, Opensound’s founder, will return to co-curate with Lou Bunk. This performance is dedicated to our loved and missed friend Lou Cohen, who co-directed Opensound for many years and always ended the season with a performance of Variations III.

SOMERVILLE STEAMPUNK MARSHMALLOW FLUFF FESTIVAL - August 15, 2014

What the Fluff? is a unique Somerville festival dedicated to food, invention and art that celebrates Archibald Query, Somerville resident and inventor of Marshmallow Fluff. Each year the residents of Somerville collaborate on a huge festival that features activities, music, food and fun for Fluff fans of all ages.

This is a great opportunity for a local graphic designer to add to their portfolio by designing a poster, t-shirt and related materials for a wildly popular, highly attended event, now in its 9th year.

FluffCardFrontforprinterThis year’s theme is “Steam-Fluff” and the Festival will be steampunk-inspired. The graphic designer will be asked to create a fun, eye-catching full color digitally printed 11 x 17 poster that reflects this theme as well as the all-ages, fun, Marshmallow Fluff nature of the event. Elements of the poster design or a related design will be used on a screen-printed t-shirt that will be sold at the event. The designer will also be asked to create a postcard and social media icon.

Adobe Photoshop PDFDeadlines for ideas and final designs are throughout the summer, with most final deadlines in mid-August. There is a small stipend available for this project.

BOSTON AREA CREATIVE WORKERS EVENT - June 26, 2014

Hi all,

Given all of the energy and ideas that came out of the 6/5 "How we get by" discussion, we're having a follow-up meeting on 6/25 to explore whether we need a new creative worker network to address economic issues. Hope you can make it! And hope you decide to help spread the word!

--
A New Network for Boston Area Creative Workers?
630pm-9pm
Lesley University - Brattle Campus
Sherrill Library
Third Floor
Room 350
89 Brattle St.
Harvard Square
contact: tdevin@yahoo.com
FB event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/1433263693601957

Boston area creative workers - visual artists, designers, musicians, dancers, actors, writers, filmmakers, videographers, audio specialists, architects, makers, and every conceivable hybrid of same - are cordially invited to an important meeting.

Attendees will decide if an new independent creators network is needed to take action on critical issues relating our individual and collective survival like jobs, grants, housing, healthcare, education, environment, etc. We'll also discuss practical steps to coming up with solutions to these issues.

The meeting will start by taking testimony from creators about our political economic needs. All existing local, state and national creators organizations and institutions are also invited to send representatives and will be encouraged to talk about the scope of their current activities.

At the end of the meeting, attendees will ask ourselves whether we would like to form a new network or not. This will not be a vote, but a simple "stay or go" decision. Those who agree that a new network is needed will indicate their support and commit to further meetings.

Come join us on June 25th so we can start addressing these issues!

OPENAIR CIRCUS FUNDRAISER - June 28, 2014

If you haven't heard of us, we're a Somerville based, non-profit, community circus. We promote an appreciation of arts, community, and promote leadership and self esteem in kids (and adults). Our main program runs for 6 weeks from the end of June through the start of August, culminating in a series of performances where students get to show off the skills they've learned. We keep our registration fees extremely low so students of any economic background can participate. For more details, please visit our website: www.openaircircus.org

Our pancake breakfast is an excellent chance to help us raise the funds to keep our registration fees so low! We'll be serving pancakes (gluten free and regular), eggs, sausage, veggie patties, coffee and O.J. Tickets at the door will be $9/teen or adult (11 years old or older); $5/child (10 years old or younger); $25/family.

SQUEEZEBOX SLAM - June 14, 2014

The Nave Gallery and the Somerville Arts Council present the 2nd Somerville Squeezebox Slam!
Saturday, June 14 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Locations: Statue Park 12 to 3 PM
7 hills Park 3 to 6 PM
Davis Square

This is a celebration, of accordions, button boxes and other free standing reed instruments. As with the first festival, accordionists of all skill levels and musical genres are invited to stroll around the neighborhoods of Somerville, sharing their melodious sounds, and like pied pipers from an alternative fairy tale, beckon all to come and follow them as they head to Davis Square for a concert of some of New England’s finest squeezebox players. So dust off your grandfather’s squeezebox that’s been sitting in the attic and join us for an afternoon of pumping the bellows! Accordion themed art/crafts will be for sale. Curated by Michael McLaughlin.

From 12-3pm accordionists will stroll around Somerville, ultimately congregating in Davis Sq. Local accordionists bring your boxes, band together or find your own corner and play. There are no rules! This is accordion anarchy. At 3pm, head to Davis Sq. where Lady Kielbasia will get the concert rolling with a group play along, "The Big Squeeze."

Kielbasia is an Accordion-Playing Drag Lunch Lady. She’s been voted Best Drag Queen with an Accordion in San Francisco, and was named Provincetown’s Family Favorite. After a long and illustrious career in cabaret, burlesque, and shameless private party entertainment in San Francisco, Provincetown, LA, and NYC, she is now semi-retired with her kitty and garden in Somerville.

HOW ARTISTS EARN MONEY/MAKE A LIVING - June 4, 2014

"How we get by" is a group exploration of how artists earn their money for living and creative expenses. While making money from creative work is the ideal, the fact is that most of us earn most of our money in other ways. The fact that we live in a very expensive city only makes things trickier.

A dozen invited artists will share information on their income sources, living costs, and how this affects their creative work. Representatives of artist coops and art organizations will also be on hand to put their two cents in. Members of the audience will be welcome to share their experiences as well, and add to the discussion on how we can all learn to get by better.
