SEEKING CIRCUS PERFORMERS - December 2, 2007

Calling all freaks! Actors, dancers, aerialists, contortionists,
jugglers, acrobats, puppeteers, hula-hoopers, stilt walkers,
acrobalancers, object manipulators, sideshow spectacles -- if you have
a talent and a desire to perform, we want to see it!

The Madcap Rumpus Society is holding auditions for our spring show, to
be performed in late April or May of 2008. The exuberant and talented
Emperor Norton's Stationary Marching Band, a fifteen-piece circus band
gaining notoriety on the Greater Boston scene, will accompany us. (
http://www.ensmb.com ) The profits from the show, which come from a
weekend run of 2-3 performances, will provide compensation to be
shared among the cast and crew, as well as help to build a foundation
for future productions.

We are looking for soloists & groups to create acts to fit into our
show's framework, as well as ensemble members to work intensively as a
group to create that framework. All performers should be able to work
both independently and cooperatively with other artists and under the
supervision of the show's creative directors. Ensemble members will
rehearse twice a month until March/April, when rehearsals will be held
more frequently.

We are particularly seeking dancers, actors, and other theatrical &
physical performers. Regardless of whether you have circus experience,
if this project sounds interesting to you, we encourage you to audition.

Auditions will be held on Dec. 1 and 2. Email ringmaster@ensmb.com to
schedule an appointment, or to find out more. Please bring a 3-5
minute piece demonstrating your technical and creative talents, as
well as resumes, description of performance experience or artist's
statements if you have them.

Please spread the news far and wide! The circus is coming to town!

BROOKLINE WATERCOLOR EXHIBITION - Nov 28 - Dec 16, 2007

Starting November 28, 2007, the Brookline Arts Center (BAC) will present a selection of new watercolors by Brookline artist and architect, Luca Ricco. "Luca Ricco: Watercolors" is his second solo exhibition at the BAC and is remembered fondly for his first, as it drew an exceptional and enthusiastic crowd.

As a young man in Italy, Luca Ricco studied art and architecture. “I always had a passion for painting, but, for one reason or another, I was trained as an architect, and I sketched and painted as hobbies. In 2003, I had a brain tumor, and at that point I re-evaluated my life. Painting was a central part of my life, and I decided to devote more time to it.” Since Ricco was partially paralyzed in 2003, his work has grown and developed to new levels of mastery. He now manages a busy career in architecture, while painting extraordinary new watercolors.

To meet Luca Ricco, please join us at the exhibition’s Opening held with during Crafts Showcase Preview Party on Wednesday, November 28th from 6:00-9:00pm. The exhibition of watercolor landscapes filled with color, movement, and emotion will continue through December 16th.
“Luca is an amazing artist and person. His artwork reflects his vitality and love for life. It is our honor to put his watercolors on display for the second time at the Brookline Arts Center,” says assistant director of the Brookline Arts Center, Jonelle Prill-Tate.

In conjunction with the new exhibit, the Brookline Arts Center will present its 33rd annual Crafts Showcase from November 28 - December 16. During this time, the public will be able to view and purchase handmade crafts from artisans across the country, finding unique gifts for the holiday season. STATE HEALTHCARE ENROLLMENT - November 13, 2007

Next Tuesday, November 13, at the Mystic Activity Center there is a special health insurance enrollment and information event at the Mystic Activity Center from 4 to 7:30 pm.

The state's new health insurance law requires that everyone have health insurance by the end of the year or face possible penalties. November 15 is the deadline for envrollment to get on the plan before the end of the year.

So if you or someone you know needs health insurance, this event at the Mystic is a great opportunity to get questions answered and enroll on the spot.

Specialists from the Cambridge Health Alliance will be on site to provide real-time enrollment for residents. To be prepared for the enrollment process, I encourage residents to bring identification and their two most recent pay-stubs. These documents will help determine what plans you qualify for.

I also have some flyers in English and Spanish, and you can get more at CAAS.

I've pasted the original announcement below. Please spread the word and encourage your clients to come to the Mystic.

-Warren Goldstein-Gelb

Residents can Enroll in and Learn About Health Care Plans at November 13th Event

Media reports indicate that so many people are trying to find out about getting mandatory insurance under the new MA law that the phone lines are jammed. Here's your chance to go to the front of the line.

Mandatory Health Insurance: Somerville Information and Enrollment Event
Do you need health insurance or know someone who does? Are you confused about the requirement that all Massachusetts residents have health insurance or face a penalty? Are you worried about the November 15 deadline? Do you need help figuring out what to do?

Part of Massachusetts' new "universal" health care law requires that everyone over 18 have health insurance by Dec. 31 if they can afford it, or lose their personal deduction on this year's taxes. That means a cost of about $219 per person. Because insurance plans start on the first of the month, you need to enroll by Nov. 15 to avoid the penalty.

On Nov. 13, you're invited to learn more, and you can even enroll immediately at an event at the Mystic Activity Center in Somerville.

From 4 to 7:30 at 530 Mystic Avenue, specialists from the Cambridge Health Alliance will be on site to provide real-time enrollment for residents. To be prepared for the enrollment process, I encourage residents to bring identification and their two most recent pay-stubs. These documents will help determine what plans you qualify for.

We'll also have experts to explain the law and the plans.
The event is being organized by Senator Pat Jehlen, along with Representatives Tim Toomey, Carl Sciortino, and Denise Provost, Mayor Joseph Curtatone, the Commonwealth Connector, Cambridge Health Alliance, Community Action Agency of Somerville (CAAS), Somerville Community Corporation, The Welcome Project and others.

More information is available at www.MAhealthconnector.org, or by calling 1-877-MA-ENROLL weekdays. Health Care for All is another helpful resource: hcfama.org, or 1.800.272.4232.

You can also call Senator Jehlen's office with questions: 617-722-1578.

TOY EXHIBITION - December 1-22, 2007

Brickbottom Artist Building, 1 Fitchburg Street, Somerville

617-776-3410, www.brickbottomartists.com, free and wheelchair accessible.

Gallery Hours: Thursday-Saturday 12-5

Toys & Games: December 1 – 22

Opening Reception: Sunday, December 2, 4-6pm

Selected artists explore the subject of toys and games. Pieces in the exhibit may be handmade toys or games artists had given to their own children, or artwork inspired by toys, games and the concept of "play".

A partial list of artists include: Jen Fries, Robert Goss, Pauline Lim, Gina Kamentsky, Charlotte Kaplan, David Kessler, Mark Luiggi, Rosamond Purcell, Randy Regier, Craig Robertson, Annie Silverman, Jessica Straus, M.L. Van Nice, Ellen Weinberg as well as unknown outsider artists.

Randy Regier's "faux" products of toy manufacturers from a sort of "parallel consumer society",a world in which bad dreams are as likely to come true as good.
Jessica Straus' small wall sculptures inspired by geometric gameboards.
Craig Robertson's egg tempera paintings showing modern additions to the tarot deck.
Gina Kamentsky's wind-up confections constructed of bits and pieces of everyday objects.
Actual antique toys and games ravaged by time, the elements, worms and rust only to be saved form utter oblivion and re-presented with new life by Rosamond Purcell.
And an anonymous “artist” from long ago who carved hundreds of tiny figures over and over again, yet never seemed able to get any more skilled doing it.
In contrast to the overblown consumerism associated with the holiday season, most of these pieces may not be for sale, so you needn't worry about standing in long lines at the register! Take a break from the frenzy and explore artists' take on toys.

The Brickbottom Artist Association (BAA), is dedicated to preserving and expanding the arts in Somerville and the greater Boston area. Kalish discovered the on campus glassblowing studio and immediately began mastering his craft. In 1989, he met his wife, Trish Dalto, in that same studio. After college, the couple started producing and selling their own designs. They opened North Country Glass studio in Hillsboro, NH in 1996. The couple now sells pieces to both local and national galleries and has used their unique personal styles to collaborate and produce a wide range of decorative and functional glass. They now manage their business through their website (www.northcountryglass.com), and monthly craft shows and fairs.

The couple has a sincere appreciation for each other’s work. Kalish’s designs are a bit more abstract than Dalto’s, but equally as skilled. They collaborate on practical pieces such as wine glasses, champagne flutes, paperweights and lamps.

Boston area residents will be able to see Kalish and Dalto’s work when North Country Glass studios come to Brookline Arts Center’s Annual Crafts Showcase November 28th-December 16th. Each year, the nonprofit in Brookline, MA showcases nearly 100 national and local artists and their one-of-a-kind pieces at the Crafts Showcase. It’s a unique holiday shopping experience – calm and relaxing – with every piece hand-made.

Admission is free and proceeds benefit Brookline Arts Center’s educational programs. In addition to glassblowing, the Showcase will feature ceramics, jewelry, fine marble, 2-D prints, scarves, toys, lamps and much more. Executive Director Navarre remarks, “Every year, over the course of three weeks, over 3,000 people come out to the Showcase to see new artists and their unique crafts. We are thrilled to have such high quality artists as Alex Kalish and Trish Dalto join us this year.”

To see Alex Kalish and Trish Dalto’s unique collection, visit their website at www.northcountryglass.com or come to the 33rd annual Crafts Showcase Thursday through Sunday evenings from November 28th through December 16th at the Brookline Arts Center, 86 Monmouth St. in Brookline.
