STATE HEALTHCARE ENROLLMENT - November 13, 2007

Next Tuesday, November 13, at the Mystic Activity Center there is a special health insurance enrollment and information event at the Mystic Activity Center from 4 to 7:30 pm.

The state's new health insurance law requires that everyone have health insurance by the end of the year or face possible penalties. November 15 is the deadline for envrollment to get on the plan before the end of the year.

So if you or someone you know needs health insurance, this event at the Mystic is a great opportunity to get questions answered and enroll on the spot.

Specialists from the Cambridge Health Alliance will be on site to provide real-time enrollment for residents. To be prepared for the enrollment process, I encourage residents to bring identification and their two most recent pay-stubs. These documents will help determine what plans you qualify for.

I also have some flyers in English and Spanish, and you can get more at CAAS.

I've pasted the original announcement below. Please spread the word and encourage your clients to come to the Mystic.

Residents can Enroll in and Learn About Health Care Plans at November 13th Event

Media reports indicate that so many people are trying to find out about getting mandatory insurance under the new MA law that the phone lines are jammed. Here's your chance to go to the front of the line.

Mandatory Health Insurance: Somerville Information and Enrollment Event
Do you need health insurance or know someone who does? Are you confused about the requirement that all Massachusetts residents have health insurance or face a penalty? Are you worried about the November 15 deadline? Do you need help figuring out what to do?

Part of Massachusetts' new "universal" health care law requires that everyone over 18 have health insurance by Dec. 31 if they can afford it, or lose their personal deduction on this year's taxes. That means a cost of about $219 per person. Because insurance plans start on the first of the month, you need to enroll by Nov. 15 to avoid the penalty.

On Nov. 13, you're invited to learn more, and you can even enroll immediately at an event at the Mystic Activity Center in Somerville.

From 4 to 7:30 at 530 Mystic Avenue, specialists from the Cambridge Health Alliance will be on site to provide real-time enrollment for residents. To be prepared for the enrollment process, I encourage residents to bring identification and their two most recent pay-stubs. These documents will help determine what plans you qualify for.

We'll also have experts to explain the law and the plans.
The event is being organized by Senator Pat Jehlen, along with Representatives Tim Toomey, Carl Sciortino, and Denise Provost, Mayor Joseph Curtatone, the Commonwealth Connector, Cambridge Health Alliance, Community Action Agency of Somerville (CAAS), Somerville Community Corporation, The Welcome Project and others.
