Like art, food is a visual, sensory and social experience. Flavors and textures, aromas and taste are all elements that can be explored through artwork. Culture, memories and health are just some themes that can be viewed through the lens of food. Bite is an exploration of art made with food and about food.

Please note: We will be collecting food and toiletries donations throughout the show to support the Somerville Homeless Coalition’s Project Soup. A full list of needs can be found here: https://www.somervillehomelesscoalition.org/how-you-can-help/in-kind-donations/

SOMERVILLE ARMORY SEEKS ART INSTRUCTORS - March 1, 2015

The Armory's Youth Arts Arise program is looking for local artist instructors to instruct our spring session workshops in a wide range of disciplines, including both visual and performing arts. Workshops are currently scheduled for Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 3:30-5:00 pm, April-June.
We are also looking for artist interested in offering workshops during the week of July 6-10th.

Older youth will have an opportunity to participate in a mentoring/peer leadership role. Workshop themes will encourage self-exploration through investigation of the participants' individual and cultural identity as well as exploring other cultures, traditions, and diversity.

Artist instructors will teach either Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Workshops take up two or three Tuesdays or Wednesdays, depending on the time needed to accomplish the project. The stipend for artist instructors is $60 per workshop day.

Are you an artist who'd like to teach in the program? Contact us! Email education@artsatthearmory.org or call (617) 718-2191.

CREATIVE SOMERVILLE SERIES - February 25, 2015

The Creative Somerville Series

http://creativeunionsomerville.us9.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=a180f310ddf12efe0fe868f2e&id=ddababe3d4

is a series of “fireside chats” with local creatives and entrepreneurs in design, tech, food, social impact and other fields–celebrating the creative and entrepreneurial energy that makes Somerville great. The Creative Somerville Series is not your typical power point and Q&A. Our free fireside chats are about getting to hear someone’s story, learning about how they think and create, and getting to share creative energy and ideas in an intimate setting. The events are co-sponsored by the Somerville Beat and Somerville Local First.

Upcoming Events

Superpower Shenanigans & Public Space Playtime
A Conversation with Katarzyna Balug, Co- Founder, Department of Play
Wednesday, February 25, 7 p.m.
@ Aeronaut Brewing Company (14 Tyler St., Somerville)
Free, but space is limited, so reserve your spot now.

Katarzyna Balug is an artist and urbanist whose practice flows from performance, installation, and sculpture to teaching, civic design and planning research. Inspired by science fiction worlds and informed by urban planning studies, Balug’s work addresses the urgent need for imagination in urbanism. Department of Play runs temporary play zones (TPZs) that bring people together to imagine collectively and share their visions of the future. Their recent BLOCK PARTY in Union Square invited Somervillians to “consider key built elements for the first Martian dwellers.” Their forthcoming installation for the Fairmount Corridor will take place on the train, a space that is “passed-through but unmemorable” as a starting point for imagining other forms of co-existing in a crowd. Balug’s work has been shown at venues including the Muzeum Sztuki in Lodz, Poland, at the Boston Arts Festival and at FARO Tláhuac in Mexico City.

A Florist’s Path: The Beauty & The Dirt
A Conversation with Rose Mattos and Erin Heath, Founders of Forêt Design Studio
Thursday, March 19, 7 p.m.
@ Aeronaut Brewing Company (14 Tyler St., Somerville)
Free, but space is limited. Tickets will be released soon.

Forêt Design Studio is a floral & event styling company based in Somerville, MA founded by best friends Rose Mattos and Erin Heath. With their background in creating visual displays at Anthropologie, the ladies consider themselves “concept-driven” designers creating unique inspired events that are both cohesive and yet imaginative. Both are self-taught florists drawn to the natural elegance of seasonal flowers, fruiting branches, ripening berries and turning acorns. Each year, they work with local growers to choose the coming season’s bounty thus creating true “seed to table” arrangements. The ladies of Forêt have written for Design* Sponge and their clients include IDEO, MIT Media Lab, Society of Grownups, Style Me Pretty, BHLDN, and Anthropologie. Thei r work has been featured in Magnolia Rouge, Domino Magazine, Martha Stewart Weddings, Boston Wedding Magazine, Boston Home Magazine, Design New England and on the Somerville Beat. In 2014, they were named Best Wedding Florist in Boston for both Boston Magazine and theImproper Bostonian.

RECYCLE ARTIST HAS STUFF TO GIVE AWAY... AND NEEDS STUFF

I am a recycle artist and people give me their old stuff to use in my doll making and classes. Over the years I have accumulated a weird collection of stuff that I just have no use for and need to get rid of for my own mental health, but I don't want to trash it. Please see list below for what I have and what I am looking for myself:

I HAVE:

- box full of old metal stuffs and such/some old bits of toys and plastic as well as parts stripped from old computers and phones. Lots of cords and probably old chargers and phones. Not sure at this point.

- fabrics/old clothing- mostly smaller pieces of fabric and some larger pieces as well, scraps and decorator samples, some squares and rectangles intended for quilting. maybe some old tees.

- random clothing sizes from kids to plus.

- smallish random bits of wood.

- some lace I'm willing to part with very cheaply.

- lots of denim scraps from someone who makes skirts from jeans

- some beige knit tubing (for easy skirts/tops/head wraps etc.)

- various pieces of brown and green camo.

- piece of red stretch lace (maybe 2-3 yds)

- pink sheer curtains ( not sure of size or condition) could be used in recycled dressmaking.

- massive roll of bubble wrap..... Please save me from the bubble wrap!!!!!!
-

FOR SALE CHEEEEEEP!

- huge number of sewing patterns, including:

vintage, historical, costume, bridal, evening, sleep wear, etc. Mostly women's/some larger/plus sizes, kid's and men's as well.

Willing to do some bartering for the pieces I intend to keep. Always looking for new fabrics and such. See list below:

I Need:

PLEASE WARN ME IN ADVANCE IF YOU HAVE FURRY PETS - THE FUR AND DANDER TENDS TO AFFIX ITSELF TO THINGS AND HIDE IN FABRIC ITEMS AND I AM USUALLY KNEE DEEP, ITCHING AND SNEEZING BEFORE I REALIZE IT. I will need to be prepared for how to handle items.

- tiny quilt/sewing scraps (any colors/patterns) ethnic prints would be highly prized.

- yarn (any color and size, any length)

- any sewing, needle point, cross stitch. macramé, knitting supplies you don't want.

- old junk jewelry ( broken or parts missing or unstrung are all welcome).

- those old Mardi Gras beads everyone keeps, but does nothing with.

- old (used is okay) greeting cards.

- old socks/stockings/pantyhose. Must be laundered.

- acrylics (paint or pastels) don't care if used.

- old paint brushes (dried on paint is okay).

- glues or tape of any sort you don't want, even small bits.

- any type of art or printer paper you want to get rid of. (Used is fine)

- old pillows/comforters or plush toys/dolls that have seen better days and to be discarded ) CLEAN PLEASE. :)

- string and rope (any type or length).

- old buttons (any kind)

- old, frames or ugly pictures in nice frames :D

- would sell my old dead mother for an old fashioned pencil sharpener like the teacher used to have bolted on his/her desk and/or sewing machines and sergers.

- old rusty washers, cogs, bolts and the like

- old dolls and doll parts (any material okay)

Some of the fabric may be cut into squares and rectangles because I was going to make bags, but never got around to it. There are pink sheer curtains

MASS CREATIVE'S ARTS IN ACTION PETITION - February 13, 2015

Hello listserve members, over the past week, more than 2,000 arts supporters added their name to the Mass Creative's Arts in Action petition encouraging Governor Baker to keep arts and culture strong in the state budget.

Sign and share the petition by Friday, February 13th to send a strong message to Gov. Baker from a broad base of arts supporters.

With strong public funding, the arts and cultural community can continue to build vibrant and connected communities across the Commonwealth.

Here is the link to the petition: http://www.mass-creative.org/aiagovpetition?recruiter_id=1763

And please see if you can get two other folks to sign. It really only takes one minute.

And fyi, there is a little competition among other organizations involved. Somerville is currently in third place! Pretty good but...let's get another 75 signatures and be well ahead for first place.

CAMBRIDGE ART ASSOCIATION NEWS/EVENTS - February 2015

Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up,
snow is exhilarating | John Ruskin

It's hard to believe January has come and gone, and just as we celebrate a Patriots Super Bowl victory, we are being buried by more snow! I hope you will warm up with us this Friday, February 6 at University Place Gallery for the opening of PAINT, juried by Ali Ringenberg from Sloane Merrill Gallery.

On Saturday, February 7, we are hosting a second Bookbinding Workshop with Kathy Lobo. Scroll down for more information and the registration link (under Workshops)

On February 18, we'll host the third installment of Creative Process, our monthly show on CCTV Cambridge, we will feature Artist Member Joe Kitsch. Click here to view the January episode with Gessica Silverman. Joe currently has an installation in our new display window on Mifflin Place in Harvard Square. Starting this month we will feature small works (12 x 12 inches or less, priced $800 and under) as part of our SMALL WALL PROJECT at 25 Lowell Street.

I also hope you will help support CAA at Sacco's Bowl Haven on February, 24. Every Tuesday night this fantastic pizza parlor-slash-candlepin bowling alley (and a personal favorite of mine!) hosts a non-profit night, donating a portion of the evening's proceeds to a local non-profit organization. Second, we are changing up our annual fundraiser - this year, celebrating 1970s-style with a Spring Benefit at Oberon. Scroll down for more information. Tickets will go on sale on Tuesday, February 10.

Stay warm, and I hope to see you in the gallery soon!

SOMERVILLE ARMORY SexyFunTime - February 7, 2015

SexyFunTime is Boston's funniest, sexiest date – or the best way to find a new date, just in time for Valentine's Day.

SexyFunTime, is coming to Arts at the Armory in Somerville on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 7pm. Guests at this one-of-a-kind event will have a night to laugh about for years. They’ll dance, play games, eat candy, popcorn, cake & ice cream, listen to and tell stories, meet new people – even get tips to make dating, relationships, and sex more “happily,” while interacting with a troupe of Glamorous OmniAmorous Cheerleaders.

SexyFunTime guests can participate in experiences that allow them to grow closer and more emotionally intimate with their date, or, they’ll be offered ways to find a new date – all facilitated by a cast of friendly hosts in the guise of cheerleaders. These peppy hosts will facilitate conversations that help folks meet new people and maybe even win a grand prize on stage playing “It’s SexyFunTime, the dating game-show.”

If hopping on bouncy balls or playing twister with ten other people is not your idea of a good time, there’s also dancing under the disco balls or watching the world premiere of a new comedy variety show about dating, relationships, and sex – the most popular secret to happily.

Participating in SexyFunTime allows anyone to feel like a kid again, and maybe even meet someone new and special! Tickets now on sale at www.SexyFunTime.eventbrite.com

About the artist:
Be grew up in the heartland of America observing literal birds and bees, plus occasional frogs and cows, for countless hours. She later turned her laser-beam focus to absorb visual arts, and study human behavior. After initial work in communications and human relations at Drake University, she majored in multi-disciplinary fine arts at U-Mass, Dartmouth. She’s been developing the satirical, multi-media, volunteer-driven conceptual art project AFHI for more than 14 years.

About the American Family Happily Institute (AFHI):
AFHI promotes values of acceptance, equality, cooperation, and empathy in a time of cultural change. AFHI redefines family as “whoever the hell you want it to be” and family values as “family happily.” AFHI is conceptual art as movement, and movement as conceptual art.

COMING THIS FEBRUARY TO FITCHBURG STATE UNIVERSITY

Frank Armstrong | Often in a Different Landscape

frank armstrong, exhibition
Frank Armstrong, Sharp County, Arkansas, 2012
In most cases, people think of landscapes as a sweeping view of mountains, lakes, rivers, meadows, etc., but with a cultural overlay of human presence, they become social landscapes. Armstrong proves landscape is not necessarily defined by its scope and size, it can be defined by its relevance to its usage.

This exhibition will be on view at the Hammond Hall Art Gallery at Fitchburg State University from February 25th to April 8th, with an Artist Talk on Thursday, March 19th at 3:30pm.

COMING THIS MARCH TO THE DANFORTH ART MUSEUM

Elizabeth Ellenwood | Of Light And Line

elizabeth ellenwood, photographer, danforth art, panopticon gallery
Elizabeth Ellenwood, Curtain, 2013
Elizabeth Ellenwood’s photographs are distinctly rooted in place and the everyday, and her process and treatment of subject matter emphasize the importance of the elements of photography. Ellenwood’s work is indebted to photographic history—modernism, constructivism, and the angular planes of The New Topographics—yet she creates a distinct new interpretation of the often overlooked elements of the everyday landscape. The elegant simplicity of her compositions highlights the way in which she negotiates natural light, line, shadow, and richness of tone. Nuanced views of outside wires, building façades, and the billowing of a curtain reveal modernist sensibilities and experimentations with form that complicate otherwise familiar spaces to produce a new view on traditional subject matter.

This exhibition will be at the Danforth Art Museum in Framingham, Mass. from March 15-May 17.
Members Only Reception: Saturday, March 14th from 6:00-8:00pm.
Artist Talks: Wednesday, April 8th at 12:30pm and Sunday, April 19th at 3:00pm.

Atelieri O. Haapala, Old School Archaeology II, 2009
Our dear friends from Finland, Saara Salmi and Marco Melander, the dynamic duo otherwise known as Atelieri O. Haapala have been quite busy over the past year. They just wrapped up three solo exhibitions, including trips to Edinburgh, Russia and Berlin, and directed one music video along the way. We're hoping to get them back to Boston in the near future. If you were at our Dress Up exhibition back in 2013, you'll understand why.

For those of you not familiar with their work, check out these Contemporary Cabinet Cards that are available through Panopticon Gallery.

COMING TO PANOPTICON GALLERY IN MID-MARCH

Guitar Heroes: Photographs from Behind the Six String

Loads of young, aspiring guitar players use to cover their bedroom walls with photographs and posters of their favorite musicians. I know this first hand because when I was younger, I was like that. As society has moved into a more digital world, today's guitar heroes are not worshiped like their predecessors from the past––the game has changed. Just search YouTube and you’ll see an endless crop of exceptional guitar players from all over the world looking to be discovered.

This exhibition at Panopticon Gallery is meant to inspire those musicians who strive for greatness. We are mixing photographs of the famous, with the not so famous––from the stage to the street. So come join us and be inspired as we showcase these guitar-themed photographs by Ron Pownall, Rowland Scherman, Roger Farrington, Jeff Thiebauth, Daniel Tedeschi, Harold Feinstein, Ernest C. Withers, Leslii Stevens, Paris Visone, Gary Samson, Steven McBride and others to be announced soon.

As part of our philanthropic efforts, we have selected these two music non-profit organizations to raise money and awareness for during this exhibition. They are the:

Keeping the Blues Alive organization, started by Joe Bonamassa
and
The Community Music Center of Boston.

Early Sponsors For This Exhibition Include:
