  CALL TO ARTISTS   EAST END WINDOW ARTS PROJECT THIS YEAR’S THEME: Carnaval DEADLINE: April 2, 2019   East Somerville Main Streets invite visual artists to submit work for East End Windows Project 2019 under the theme Carnaval. Selected work will hang in the windows of now-closed restaurant East End Grill at 118 Broadway   This is a juried exhibit; East Somerville Main Streets staff and board members will review proposals. We seek work that can capitalize on the unique spaces of East Somerville and is bold and innovative—art that will capture people’s attention while walking through East Somerville and help convey the vibrant artistic and cultural energy of the area.   Window dimensions: ·   One small window: 47” Wide X 57” Tall facing BROADWAY ·   Two tall large windows that reach the floor with four 23” Wide X 74” Tall panels each facing BROADWAY ·   One small window 43” Wide X 56” Tall facing BROADWAY ·   One Small window 36” Wide X 58” Tall facing GLEN STREET   Windows facing BROADWAY have Northern exposure, the window facing GLEN has Western exposure.  Please specify if you’d like your work to be displayed in a particular window.   Inspired by the annual SomerStreets Festival Carnaval (June 2nd), we hope to explore the atmosphere and essence of Carnaval. Whether you choose to explore specific cultural celebrations or aspects of community, culture and celebration, we look forward to your creative interpretations of this theme.   No stipend is available for this project at this time.  Artists are encouraged to submit completed works that meets the theme for this project.  East Somerville Main Streets staff will assist with installation of artist works at East End Grill.   DATES Window exhibition dates: May 18 – June 15, 2019 with the possibility of extending longer depending on space availability. We are celebrating over 80 years in business, and to celebrate, we are offering incredible lobster and prime rib specials.  We are looking for specific restaurant or New England cuisine themed imagery.  The mural is to be installed at the restaurant’s South facing wall (facing the parking lot).  We anticipate this mural to be painted between August 11 and Aug 30.   About East Somerville Main Streets   East Somerville Main Streets mission is to improve the life of our community by building investment, connection and pride in our main street. We are seeking photographs of the highest caliber that capture the spirit and reflect the unique qualities of East Somerville.   Take our "Introduction to Robotics using raspeberry pi and arduino" workshop at artisan's asylum! This Sunday, March 17th from 11:00AM-5:30PM Sign up now!   Class Description Are you curious to learn the basics of robotics but do not know where to start. This one day class will provide the kind of basic introduction that you have been looking for. Starting with simple off-the-shelf electronics and utilizing an open-source robot platform and control software developed at Artisan’s Asylum, the basic elements of robotics; namely motion control, sensors and sensing, computer vision and artificial intelligence (AI) will be covered. The challenge of creating a robot that can play robot soccer and in being able to recognize the soccer ball, the soccer goals and the individual soccer players will be discussed and demonstrated. Class GoalsAt the completion of the class, the students will have learned the following:– The particular strengths of the Raspberry Pi and Arduino boards– Simple robot programming with Python– Remote programming of robots through a web interface– Reading sensor such as gyros, distance and proximity sensors– Motors and motion control with sensor feedback– Raspberry Pi camera image acquisition from within Python– Computer vision using OpenCV– Detecting a soccer ball using Cascade classification techniques– How to recognize computer goals and robot soccer players Materials ProvidedAll robot assemblies will be provided to the students for the duration of the class. Students are encouraged to bring their own laptops if they own one. If they do not, they may use one of the available desktop machines at AA for the duration of the class. He passed away on February 22, 2013, at the age of 60, after a vibrant life filled with art, music and community. Upon his departure from this terrestrial sphere, he left behind over 80 large canvases [most 72” by 55”] as well as dozens of medium and smaller sized works. Following the very successful “Soaring Through The Matrix” show in August 2018 – one of Nave Gallery’s most popular shows – “Magnus Johnstone: Larger Works” is the second of what his family and friends hope will be ongoing local and national shows that will display and sell his remaining work.
