US2 Seeks Local Artists For Headquarters Wall Feature Deadline June 15, 2015

Union Square Station Associates (US2)
Seeks Local Artists For Headquarters Wall Feature

Somerville, MA --- Union Square Station Associates (US2), the City of Somerville’s master developer partner for Union Square’s revitalization, today announced that it is seeking proposals from Somerville-based artists to design and install wall art inside the new US2 headquarters and coworking space which will soon open at 31 Union Square, the former home of Elegant Furniture.

“We want the new coworking space to reflect the vibrancy, diversity and potential that is Union Square,” said Greg Karczewski, president of US2. “Who better than someone steeped in Union Square’s arts culture to help bring that sense of community inside the walls of Union Square’s newest work space.”

In its Call for Submission, US2 says, “submissions may include murals, 2D wall art, and interactive features or exhibits.” The budget for the project is $2,000, offering a nice potential payday to one of Somerville’s many creative professionals.

Applications can be found at the US2 website at http://www.us2unionsquare.info/blog/2015/5/26/call-for-submissions and must be received no later than June 15 at 5:00pm. Applicants are instructed to email all information to Becca@US2UnionSquare.com.

US2 previously announced their new 2,500 square foot ground floor space will be staffed by a full-time US2 representative who will be available to field questions and provide general information about the Union Square revitalization. The space will serve as a headquarters, meeting space and a central hub for the recruitment of commercial tenants to fill space in the new development area and in the entire square.

CALL TO ARTISTS AND DESIGNERS – Request for Qualifications
$325,000 Public Art Commission, City of Cambridge, Massachusetts
RFQ Submission Deadline: June 22, 2015

Cambridge Arts in Cambridge, MA is seeking qualifications from artists and designers interested in creating temporary site-responsive public artwork(s) of variable duration. The site will be a newly constructed King Open Elementary and Cambridge Street Upper Schools in East Cambridge, to be completed by 2019. The City seeks artists and designers with public art experience and encourages artist-led interdisciplinary teams. From this RFQ, four finalists will be invited and paid to submit concept proposals. All finalists will attend a site visit and meet with City staff and project architects before proposal development. Final selection of one artist or team will be made by a Site Committee based on in-person proposal presentations and interviews.

The Site:
The King Open Elementary (JK- grade 5) and Cambridge Street Upper Schools (grades 6-8) are currently housed in one building at 850 Cambridge Street, situated within the city block bound by Cambridge, Berkshire, Willow, and York Streets. Also within this block are the Valente Branch Library (including the Manuel Rogers, Sr. Center for Portuguese Culture), Goldstar Mothers Pool, Frisoli Youth Center, a large playing field, and playgrounds. While all together these public facilities comprise a hub of extensive informal and formal learning and recreational amenities, the overall new construction project will include only the schools, library, and pool programs. The physical configuration or degree of integration of these three programs has not yet been determined, but it is anticipated that the new public art project will focus on the schools, each of which are anticipated to have separate entrances and identities. The original King Open School was named after Martin Luther King, Jr. and both current school programs are guided by a mission of social justice, inclusivity of all learning styles, and connection to community. The neighborhood in which these programs are situated is a combination of dense residential streets and a vibrant, eclectic commercial avenue of many independent businesses.

This Saturday DANCE MUSEUM!

Dance Museum
Saturday, May 30, 5pm-7pm
Rain date: Sunday, May 31
Union Square Somerville

Usually, to witness modern dance, you must be seated inside of a darkened theater and wait for the dancers to come out from behind a heavy curtain. In the Dance Museum, the dancers will finally be out in the open!

The performers will make Union Square their stage, both bringing their moving and intriguing pieces into the daylight, and creating new work specifically for the square. Over the course of the afternoon, you can watch both choreographed and improvised pieces performed by local dance artists. Some might even let you join in.

Calamity Co Dance focuses on both choreography and show production. When they choreograph and perform, their pieces often involve their fair share of silly faces and are built with live music, dialogue, and improvisation. The shows are dance-heavy, but always include other art forms, especially live music, comedy, and theater. Calamity aims to create an atmosphere that encourages people to enjoy art however they prefer to do so, rather than worrying about 'getting' it. The directors, Amy Mastrangelo and Meghan Riling, believe that everybody has something important to share artistically, and that art can be everywhere.

A Sunday Afternoon of Cafe Chamber Music - May 31 @4pm

Journeys in Sound presents
A Sunday Afternoon of Cafe Chamber Music
featuring Roberto Cassan & John Muratore
plus the debut of the Elinor Speirs/Ludovica Burtone Chamber Project

Inline image
Sunday, May 31, 2015 @ 4pm
Arts at the Armory Cafe 191 Highland Ave. Somerville

Accordionist Roberto Cassan (Grand Fatilla, Newpoli, MuSaner) & classical guitarist John Muratore are two exceptional musicians who have a repertoire that ranges from European classical to contemporary American, Latin American, to jazz-influenced compositions. Their collaborative arrangements combine the intimacy of chamber music with the spontaneity of jazz.
Expect to hear a heavy dose of traditional tango as well as the more evolved compositions of Astor Piazzolla. The two have also transcribed music originally composed for other instruments including the piano works of Claude Debussy and the adaption of guitar pieces by Leo Brouwer and Augustin Barrios. From the European jazz spectrum, Roberto & John also perform work by the great French jazz accordionist Richard Galliano.

Elinor Speirs, a classically trained violinist with a strong interest in jazz & world music styles, is putting together a special program of "cafe chamber music" along with Italian violinist Ludovica Burtone. Elinor performed in a Journeys in Sound event in March where she showed her versatility performing everything from jazz to Afro-Peruvian to Brazilian choro to Romanian horas. Ludovica, who is also classically trained, has performed worldwide as both a soloist and a chamber musician. In addition to her classical training, she has performed in improvisational settings in jazz and folk music contexts, and is a violin section leader of the Berklee World Strings under Eugene Friesen.
Joining Elinor & Ludovica will be Brazilian guitarist Thiago Gomes and double bassist Neil Patton. This will be the debut of their unconventional "string quartet". They will perform some originals by both Ludovica and Elinor, some jazz ballads and some material from John Zorn's Masada catalog. They may throw in a a few other surprises as well.

Retrospective Community Video Screening comes to Davis Square Theatre this June

About the event: With media production technologies changing rapidly, our community is overdue for a retrospective of the productions and visions created and expressed locally over the years. Get your Community Vault Tickets today!

Some examples of the selected archived videos being screened include Somerville Kitchenette, a sitcom from the mid 1980s produced at Somerville Community Access TV to a talk show about race relations from Cambridge Community TV as well as contemporary content which include short satirical films and music videos from Northampton Community TV, to a short comedy film produced locally by Michael Epstein. Save the date: May 30 discussion for parents who are artists/writers/etc.

Are you a parent and an artist / musician / writer / you-name-it?

If so, we hope you'll join the conversation. "how to be an artist and a parent" is a discussion series, and an online forum to Boston-area creative folks with kids.

Being a parent is pretty challenging. And raising a kid while trying to be an artist/writer/you-name-it can feel pretty overwhelming– especially when you throw in Boston’s insanely high cost of living. But we’re creative people. Maybe if we get together and talk and listen, we can find ways to support each other.

May 30 discussion event.
Join us on Saturday, May 30th, from 2 to 4:00pm at the Somerville Public Library at 79 Highland Ave in Somerville. Three creative parents (Jef Czekaj, Jennifer Johnson and Trudi Cohen) will share how they balance their lives, and then we'll discuss it all as a group. RSVP here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1591423574459948/

“How to be an artist and a parent?” is a series of discussion events and an online forum. It’s set up by Greg Cook and Tim Devin, but is inspired by some initiatives in other cities. Fore more information, see our website at https://howtobeanartistandaparent.wordpress.com/

Somerville Arts Council presents: Quicksilver Dance on Sat. May 23 in Union Square

Quicksilver Dance
Saturday, May 23 5:00 PM
Union Square Plaza
75 Union Square

For the full series check out: http://somervilleartscouncil.org/dancefest/2015

Quicksilver Dance presents:

14 Variations - This duet is a comic deconstruction of ballroom dances, set to varying renditions of Bela Bartok’s “Silk Dance” in his suite of Romanian Folk Dances.

Habitus - “Habitus” explores the idea of interdependence on both a physical and metaphorical level in relationship to our environments, both natural and man-made. Accompanied by a music and text soundscape by Boston-based composer Ryan Edwards, the five dancers come together and fall apart in a constantly moving network of inter-relationships.
Galatea’s Awakening - This duet re-imagines Ovid's myth of Pygmalion. What happens after Pygmalion's beautiful statue comes to life? Surely not everything went smoothly as Galatea became a person with her own thoughts, feelings and desires separate from, and sometimes in contradiction to, Pygmalion's ideas. The dance includes acrobatic partnering and a tale of discovering the real people beneath our own expectations of those we love.

2015 funding for the performance series is generously provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, with support from the Boston Dance Alliance.

About the Show
Written and directed by Mike Haddad

There are two certainties in life, and a show about taxes would just be sad.

This show is a collection of pieces all centered around the theme of death. Death touches every person's life, between obsessing about the thought of our own and coping with the loss of those that pass in our time. It is a source of great mystery and fear. Much like the variety of human responses to death, some of these pieces are sad, others darkly humorous, some bitter and others accepting.

Please join me for a community presentation as a 2015 Somerville Arts Council Literature Fellow, called “Remembering 1915: The 100-Year Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide,” on May 28, 2015, from 7-9 pm at the Somerville Public Library, 79 Highland Avenue, Somerville.

I will show some slides to bring alive the richness and beauty of historic Armenia while conveying the immense tragedy of 1915. This project is funded in part by a grant from the Somerville Arts Council, and supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

PORCHFEST - SATURDAY MAY 16TH.

Check out the Porchfest map and lineup. Here are some things to note:

PARKING
Residential Parking restrictions are suspended from 11am-7pm citywide day of PorchFest. This means you don't need to have a permit parking sticker to park in permit restricted areas. However, if you park at a meter, you STILL NEED TO FEED METER or you'll get a ticket. But better, walk or bike.

PORCHFEST MAPS
If you are going to download a Porchfest map, please do so as soon as possible. In the past due to heavy traffic on our Porchfest web page, our website has crashed the day of the event. So if you want a map, print one sooner rather than later.

WEATHER
Right now weather looks okay for Saturday. If by chance forecast worsens, we'll move PorchFest to Sunday (yet it's unlikely we'll do this). If uncertain, call the SAC or visit our Website any time after noon on Friday, May 15.

RESPECT

Please respect the neighbors of PorchFest performers—who may or may not love the noise or the crowds. Do not congregate in someone else’s driveway, block their sidewalks, or block streets. It’s a great community event if folks use common sense and demonstrate respect.

PORCHFEST FOR NEPAL
This year, many bands will put out donation jars to collect funds to support post-earthquake relief efforts in Nepal. Look for the PorchFest Supports Nepal flyer and consider making a donation. The Arts Council will collect all donations for Save the Children Nepal. Thanks in advance to all the bands helping out with these efforts and to PorchFest goers who make donations!

HAVE FUN!

The Nave Gallery (Somerville, MA) invites artists to participate in the curated exhibition, HackCycle.

HackCycle celebrates recycled art of the 21st century. We invite submissions from artists, nerds, makers, burners and others who employ experimentation and serendipity using today’s technological debris and/or innovative techniques as part of their creative process.

The exhibition examines the transformation of bits, bytes, cruft, e-waste, circuits, doodads, odds & ends and more into objects of art. Work may (but is not limited to) demonstrate the use of 3D printing, laser cutters and/or CNC bots in combination with found art, assemblage and/or appropriation.

FORGIVE THE DISRUPTION

Please forgive the temporary absence of current updates. The administrator for this site suffered a serious stroke on March 24th and is currently still in recovery at The Neville Center at Fresh Pond. If you would like to contribute to his recovery fund, he could really use the help and you can do so here:
