Arts at the Armory Cafe 191 Highland Ave. Somerville
Accordionist Roberto Cassan (Grand Fatilla, Newpoli, MuSaner) & classical guitarist John Muratore are two exceptional musicians who have a repertoire that ranges from European classical to contemporary American, Latin American, to jazz-influenced compositions. Their collaborative arrangements combine the intimacy of chamber music with the spontaneity of jazz.
Expect to hear a heavy dose of traditional tango as well as the more evolved compositions of Astor Piazzolla. The two have also transcribed music originally composed for other instruments including the piano works of Claude Debussy and the adaption of guitar pieces by Leo Brouwer and Augustin Barrios. From the European jazz spectrum, Roberto & John also perform work by the great French jazz accordionist Richard Galliano.
Elinor Speirs, a classically trained violinist with a strong interest in jazz & world music styles, is putting together a special program of "cafe chamber music" along with Italian violinist Ludovica Burtone. Elinor performed in a Journeys in Sound event in March where she showed her versatility performing everything from jazz to Afro-Peruvian to Brazilian choro to Romanian horas. Ludovica, who is also classically trained, has performed worldwide as both a soloist and a chamber musician. In addition to her classical training, she has performed in improvisational settings in jazz and folk music contexts, and is a violin section leader of the Berklee World Strings under Eugene Friesen.
Joining Elinor & Ludovica will be Brazilian guitarist Thiago Gomes and double bassist Neil Patton. This will be the debut of their unconventional "string quartet". They will perform some originals by both Ludovica and Elinor, some jazz ballads and some material from John Zorn's Masada catalog. They may throw in a a few other surprises as well.
