Grants for Community Curators - Info Session 10/21
Do you have a Somerville story to tell? Do you have a collection of items the world should see that speaks to our community’s past, present or future? Since 1988 the Somerville Museum has hosted exhibits curated by community members and they’re seeking applicants for their 2017 and 2018 seasons.
Proposals can be on any topic but preference is given to exhibits that incorporate a connection to the city of Somerville, past, present or future, and serve to enhance understanding and appreciation of the history, arts and culture of the city. All submissions are welcome and will be judged on the quality of the proposal. Selected community curators will receive a seed grant of $2,500 and exhibit space at the museum.
An information session is planned for Friday, October 21, 2016 at 6 pm at the Somerville Museum for those interested in learning more about the opportunity. The deadline for applications is November 4, 2016.
Over the years Somerville Museum shows have focused on the city’s past, such as “The Lost Theatres of Somerville” that explored the fourteen cinemas that once defined its Squares and “Lifting the Veil” about the 1834 burning of the Ursuline convent in what is now East Somerville. Others have focused on the community’s diverse people and cultures, such as “Three Paths to Italy,” “Immigrant City” and “From Yucuaiquín to Somerville.” Shows centered on the work of local artists such as the recent photography show “Union Square at Work” by Charan Devereaux have both documented the contemporary city and explored its future.
The Museum’s trustees seek exhibits that foster dialogue among local artists, historians and educators and the broader community to enrich understanding and lifelong learning. Proposals can be on any topic but preference is given to exhibits that incorporate a connection to the city of Somerville, past or present. Creative use of artifacts, engaging exhibit design and innovative programming that engage diverse audiences are all important. Collaboration with other artists, scholars and like-minded local organizations are encouraged but not required. Selected exhibits must be installed by the applicant within two years of receiving the award.
