CAMBRIDGE ART ASSOCIATION NEWS
It is ART that makes life, makes interest, makes importance,
and I know of no substitute for the force and beauty of its process
~ Henry James
Hello !
In this season of thanks, I want to thank YOU for the many ways you have supported your community at the Cambridge Art Association in 2014.
In 2014, the Association:
Featured 17 exhibitions of local and regional work in our two gallery spaces - the Kathryn Schultz Gallery and University Place Gallery - including exhibits juried by Dr. James Welu (Worcester Art Museum), Camilo Alvarez (samson projects), Al Miner (MFA Boston), and Dana Salvo (Clark Gallery); member-organized small group shows, including Mined/Matter, Time Travelers, and Motion Envisioned
Astrid Reischwitz, Spinneklub
Best in Show, PLATINUM
Welcomed 80 new Artist Members to the Association!
Launched a Creativity Lab - in partnership with Kyle Browne of the Cambridge Creativity Commons and Gately Youth Center - serving nearly 20 Cambridge youth in an out-of-school time program designed to promote creative thinking and hands-on learning, while connecting local youth to working artists and culminating in an exhibit at University Place Gallery
Established a partnership with Cambridge Community Television to co-present a Social Media for Artists Series (on our Third Thursdays) and continued our Creative Collaboration printmaking weekends with Maud Morgan Arts
Introduced a new, Lunch & Learn series, featuring creative-minded guest speakers
And received a $25,000 gift to establish the Irving W. and Charlotte F. Rabb Scholarship Fund, which will provide 4 full Artist Member scholarships annually, as well as a $1000 scholarship each year for a graduating Cambridge Rindge and Latin School student. Read more about the Rabb Scholarship in our Press Release
In spite of our many successes, we continue to operate at a deficit - due to uneven art sales and other factors affected by the still-struggling economy. In an effort to create a sustainable future for the Association, we are undertaking a strategic planning process, working with consultants from ESC New England, beginning next month. Your support is more crucial now than ever, as we look to build on the wonderfully rich history of the Association and ensure its long, prosperous future.
Our successes are not just made possible by you - they are for you, and for the art-makers in our community. If you have not done so already, please consider making a tax-deductible donation today, and support YOUR Cambridge Art Association.
Thank you!

FREE CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP - December 16, 2014
Tuesday, December 16th, 7-9pm, "Getting to Know Your Characters"
Join writer and Somerville Arts Council Fellowship recipient Whitney Scharer for a free 2-hour creative writing workshop called “Getting to Know Your Characters.” In this workshop, we will discuss ways of describing a character memorably and distinctly, and will explore some tools that help us get to know our characters well before we even put them on the page. We will look at examples (both good and bad) from published stories, discuss the authors’ techniques, and do some guided writing exercises that will help us get to know our characters better and describe them to the reader in compelling ways. The workshop is for fiction writers who are writing in the short fiction or novel form.
Free! At the Center for the Arts at the Armory, 191 Highland Ave, Somerville. The workshop will take place in the conference room. Please email

CAMBRIDGE ART ASSOCIATION WINTER/SPRING EXHIBITIONS
It is with great pleasure that I announce Cambridge Art Association's Winter/Spring 2015 Exhibition schedule! As part of our CAA at 70 exhibition year, these exhibits serve to showcase the talents of the broad and diverse creative communities - locally and nationally - that are served by the Association. The range of talent both presenting and curating work in the coming season - Michael Rush (Broad Art Museum at Michigan State), Ali Ringenburg (Sloane Merrill Gallery), Stephen Tourlentes (MassArt), Alexander Campos (The Center for Book Arts, NY) - underscores the wealth of support within our community for emerging and mid-career artists.
Our Artist Members are the great strength of the Association. This coming spring, we will showcase two groups of artists members at the Kathryn Schultz Gallery - Fields of Viewpoints (Covert, Duffy, Selesnick, White) in March; and Gilbert, Gilbert & Morse (Wally Gilbert, Celia Gilbert, and Diana Morse) in April.
Our 70th exhibition year culminates with a series of important shows - the 14th National Prize Show, juried by Michael Rush; our annual New Members Show; and Just Around the (Charles) Riverbend, presented in conjunction with, and celebrating 40 years of the People for Riverbend Park Trust.
We hope you will stop by one of the galleries, connect with local art and artists, and continue supporting the Cambridge Art Association!

SOMERVILLE COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION SEEKS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The Board of Directors of Union Square Main Streets seeks an Executive Director to lead the organization through a new period of neighborhood change.
Union Square Main Streets (USMS) was founded in 2005 when residents and business owners came together with representatives of the city government to revive their neighborhood as a commercial and community center. Over the past ten years Mimi Graney served as the organization’s Executive Director. During that time USMS launched and grew signature programs including the Union Square Farmers Market and the annual Fluff Festival, and helped dozens of new businesses open in what is now a nationally recognized creative hub. The organization and the neighborhood is on the cusp of significant changes as long term efforts move into new phases; the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) has broken ground on the long-awaited Green Line Extension, which will significantly improve public transit access between Union Square and downtown Boston, and the enacting of a revitalization plan promises 2.3 million square feet of new transit oriented development across seven blocks near that station slated to open in late 2018.
Reporting to the USMS Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for the day to day operations of USMS and serves as an external champion, organization builder, and internal manager during this period of exciting growth.

FREE POTTERY SHARDS FOR MOSAIC AND OTHER ARTISTS
A catastrophe befell my store yesterday when someone tripped and knocked my shelving unit full of pottery over :- (
I'd like to make "lemonade" out of the beautiful shards by calling on any of you mosaic artists or other creative types to literally "pick up the pieces" and turn this unfortunate situation into artwork.
Please stop by Blue Cloud Gallery in Ball SQ any time and salvage what you can. My hours are Tues. thru Fri. 11-7, Sat. 10-6 and Sun. 10-4.
I would feel a whole lot better if something good could come out of this!
Gratefully,

RESTORING ECOSYSTEMS TO REVERSE GLOBAL WARMING - November 21-23, 2014
Bringing the Power of Biology into the Forefront of the Climate Movement
http://bio4climate.org/conference-2014/
Nov. 21-23, 2014
Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts
Organized and Sponsored by Biodiversity for a Livable Climate.
Co-sponsored by Tufts Institute of the Environment and The Center for
International Environment and Resource Policy at the Fletcher School of Tufts University
karoo-w-lables.png
The land on the left is reversing global warming by capturing carbon dioxide and water by proper use of keystone animal species and land management; the land on the right is exacerbating it though soil degradation and loss of carbon to the atmosphere.

“I urge students, colleagues, and the public to attend the Biodiversity for a Livable Climate conference." - Prof. William Moomaw, Tufts University, Founder, Center for International Environment and Resource Policy
eventbrite_logo_gradient_v2
Registration
Background and Hope
In order to address the destructive climate processes that are already under way, we need safe, low-tech, and inexpensive solutions to drawdown prodigious amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Fortunately, there is a way: the capacity of the natural world to store carbon in soils worldwide.
This conference highlights innovations in soil restoration for carbon capture, bringing together leaders from around the world in climate and soil science, restorative land management, and climate activism. It will explore the potential, the practices, and the policy implications.
Together we can open this essential “second front” in the climate movement, complementing emissions reductions, and offering hope for a livable future. There will be many opportunities for networking and audience participation.

“Why do we want to host a conference like this? Because harnessing biology represents a new paradigm for climate mitigation that gives us hope.” - Prof. Antje Danielson, Director, Tufts Institute of the Environment
“A large fraction of anthropogenic climate change resulting from CO2 emissions is irreversible on a multi-century to millennial time scale, except in the case of a large net removal of CO2 from the atmosphere over a sustained period.” - Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Fifth Assessment Report, 2013
“The potential for land to hold carbon and act as a sink for greenhouse gases is unparalleled.” - United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification

LOOKING FOR COLLABORATING DANCERS
Hi. My name is Basil I create wearable-art characters called Fine Art Superheroes. I exhibit the Fine Art Superheroes through live performances and photographs. These avatars embody desires intrinsic to the creative process, wearing motifs that evoke creativity, harmony, protest, and transformation. I use motifs from Arabic calligraphy, Arabesque Art, and Art Nouveau, painted onto cotton unitards using acrylic paint for fabric.
I'm looking for dancers to collaborate with on a short performance for Medicine Wheel's World Aids Day/ A Day Without Art. I am donating my time, materials, and creative efforts to this vigil, and unfortunately I don't have resources to pay my collaborating dancer. If it is something you can do I'm confident that you'll find the experience rewarding. All the artists involved are donating their artistic contributions to cause that speaks to us all as creatives. As a token of my gratitude for your participation I would be happy to have printed for you a photograph from your performance, that could become part of your portfolio.
If this sound like something you would like to participate in please email me at basil.elhalwagy@... . We'll set up a time to meet I'll share with you more about my artwork.
Also, I've included links to one photo of each Fine Art Superhero. You may want to think about which one you gravitate toward most.
Thank you for considering!

SCATV GALLERY EXHIBITION - Through December 19, 2014
DOTS and DASHES: Paintings by Dixie Manley
@The SCATV Gallery 90 Union Square, Somerville, MA
Now thru Dec 19, 2014
Dixie Dixie Manley is a self-taught abstract artist with a unique approach to painting. This artist uses traditional materials, paint and canvas, in a very nontraditional way. Sometimes Dixie Manley uses a brush to create images on the canvas; other times she pours the paint on to the canvas, and gently coaxes the paint to create the image. The end result is a diverse and impressive body of work. Dixie Manley uses color, shapes and glitter to give her paintings energy and spirit which she graciously and generously shares with the viewer.
Check out Dixie Manley’s ART@SCATV interview with Janet Cormier, Program Host and SCATV Gallery on Tuesdays @ 6:30 PM on Channel 3 for Somerville residents, or online at www.scatvsomerville.org/artgallery

CALLING VENDORS FOR POP UP HOLIDAY MARKET - November 29, 2014
Calling vendors for Pop Up Holiday Market
Seeking artists and craftspeople to participate in a Pop Up Holiday Market on December 13 and 14 in Union Square. Some jewelry; ceramics, glass, accessories(Hats, scarves, mittens, bags, etc.), glass, photos, holiday ornaments/ wreaths, soaps/ lotions, wood, kids clothing, pet stuff and other cool stuff.
This idea for the market has “popped up” quickly and due to the late date I am looking for people before the space has been secured. It’s not worth pursuing if there aren’t enough vendors available so I can’t guarantee anything yet. We are anticipating confirmation of space availability this week. Information on price and booth size will then be determined.
If interested please contact jcoppolo@hotmail.com with the following information :
name
business name
phone #
medium/ price range
and 2-3 jpegs of your work(one that could be used for PR )
by November 29th. There is limited space so apply soon!
Thanks !

FREE SOMERVILLE SKILLSHARE CLASSES - November 17, 2014
The Somerville Skillshare team and Arts at the Armory are excited to announce the launch of a free Skillshare class series!
Following the wildly popular event at the Armory in March, we are bringing Somerville Skillshare to the Armory Café once a month starting in November.
There will be two different 50-minute classes per monthly session.
Our November 17th session will include “Don’t Make Art, Just Make Something” from 7:00-7:50 pm and “Imaginary Mapmaking” from 8:00-8:50 pm. The December 22nd classes will be announced soon!
Because of limited space in the café, we kindly ask that you RSVP via Eventbrite. There will be no formal registration, however, so space will be filled first come, first served.
What is Skillshare? On March 2nd, 2014, nearly 800 people attended the
first annual Somerville Skillshare, a free learning event that featured classes taught by nearly 40 local teachers. Now, we're turning this event into a monthly series so that we can continue to showcase the unique talents of local residents!
It’s a way to learn new skills, jump-start new hobbies, and meet other people with similar interests, all in a fun and informal setting. And best of all, it’s completely free!
We’d love to hear from you! If you have an idea for a class you’d like to see or if you’re interested in teaching a class, please contact us at somervilleskillshare@gmail.com

WASHINGTON STREET GALLERY EXHIBITION - November 8, 2014
Corn Maze: An Eye For An Ear
An Exhibition of Photography by Lee Kilpatrick
RECEPTION:
November 8, 2014 from 7-10 PM
ON VIEW:
November 8, 2014 to November 29, 2014 Saturdays from 12-4 PM
Fall is here, and whether you’re a hipster looking for a hayride or a child questing for a bouncy castle, your harvest activities are likely centered around the corn maze. Lee Kilpatrick’s photo exhibit "Corn Maze: An Eye for an Ear" explores both the physicality and metaphysicality of this modern rural tradition.
Kilpatrick's "stalk photography" depicts the mazes as well as their a-maze-ing attractions. In his images, visitors attempt to conquer the walls of corn, then relax after escaping the labyrinth of vegetation. Hot cider, slides made from corrugated plastic drainage pipes, potato cannons shooting their projectiles into the mouths of cartoon characters, jumping pillows, explorers bearing emergency flags, and police tape all appear in a beautiful, pastoral setting.
"'Maze' is like 'maize,' the native American term for corn," says Kilpatrick. "So it’s like there are two levels of 'maze.' Similarly, the people you see visiting the farms are navigating both the maze of corn, and the maze of their lives. In 2011 a family called 911 because they were so lost in the Connors maze --or was it existential stress about their newborn baby that caused them such panic?"
At Washington Street, you will see that the corn maze is for humanity and beyond, and a place of both joy and desperation. The world of the corn maze can hold an anxious princess from Frozen, carrion birds waiting to feed upon the fallen, bison with hateful eyes, triumphant explorers finally achieving sweet freedom, and, forever and always, pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins!

Building a Creative Life
A LUNCH & LEARN lecture presented by Clara Lieu, author of Learn, Create and Teach: A Guide to Building a Creative Life
$20 for CAA Members; $25 for not-yet Members
Includes lunch!*
Whether you are a student, professional, or teacher of the arts, this lecture delivers succinct, practical, and candid advice that addresses both common concerns in the creative path and the real-life challenges an artist faces in the real world. Breaking down the creative arc into "student," "professional," and "teacher" reinforces that we all have something to learn, to create, and to teach. Addressing universal problems, fears, and roadblocks faced by artists, this lecture offers solutions, hope, and motivation.
About Clara: Clara Lieu is a professor, writer, and visual artist. She is a blogger for the Huffington Post, where she writes an advice column for visual artists called "Ask the Art Professor." Currently, she teaches in the Division of Foundation Studies at the Rhode Island School of Design. EMMANUEL COLLEGE ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM - February 1, 2015
The Emmanuel College Art Department offers an eight-week artists residency to four artists each summer from mid June to mid August. The residency supports a diverse group of artists, providing time and space for established and emerging artists to develop their work.
The Art Department specifically aims to award a residency to one individual from each of the four categories: ceramics, photography, printmaking and social justice. Fostering creative and artistic excellence, the residency also plays an important role in advancing the visual arts on the Emmanuel campus, providing an important educational program on contemporary art accessible to students, staff and faculty.
The residency defines Emmanuel College as a leader in the visual arts and brings greater visibility to that leadership role beyond the confines of the College.
Applications are now being accepted for the 2015 residency. All applications must be received by Feb 1st, 2015.

FAQ: Saturday classes vs. open shop
We explicitly schedule our classes to overlap with Saturday Open Shop because we *want* a pretty free and open play between open build and structured classes. If you are planning to attend the class and can support it financially, please do! If you can't pay, you're welcome to join us either way -- that's part of why we schedule it to overlap with open shop. We charge money so that we can pay outside instructors for their time and effort and materials -- it gives us a way to give back to the arts community and help support local artists and tinkerers -- and also lets us bring in a more diverse set of workshops to share with you and your kids!
Like what we do? Buy a membership to help support it!
SIGN UP FOR A MEMBERSHIP
If Parts and Crafts has been an important part of your kid's life, please help support what we do by buying a monthly membership to help bring our programs to the wider Somerville community!
Memberships lets us run our programs for free and cheap, and guarantees that P&C can be available to anyone who wants to attend, regardless of whether they can pay for our programs. They let us pay our staff a living wage, and they allow us to devote more resources to outreach and grant support (two areas that typically get left by the wayside in small scrappy organizations that are constantly scraping for pennies)
At the moment the vast majority of membership funding is going to support our afterschool programs -- there are currently 75 kids making use of these programs, many of whom are coming for free or very cheap thanks to your support! Memberships also support our partnership with the Somerville Arts Council, free monthly workshops with the Beautiful Stuff Project, and wider collaborations to help us bring more programs to kids offsite. If you like our programs and want to help us grow, click on the link above to find out more!

School of HONK! @ Sprout
Date: Sunday November 9, 3-5 pm
Place: Sprout, 339R Summer Street
Cost: Free / by donation.
We'll have refreshments (bring something to share if you'd like!), and from 3-3:30 pm we'll have some sectional time to work out parts for our first two songs for those who need help. Then we will play as a band at 3:30. We will review "Rock Anthem" and "Cariñito" and we'll also learn "Ghostbusters Theme." We hope to end with another parade, along some new route (this time with flyers to hand out!)
