VERNON STREET STUDIO SPACE AVAILABLE
I have one space available in our large shared studio at 6 Vernon Street, on the 2nd floor. It is one of
5 spaces in a large room. The available space is about 10’ wide, and 13’ deep.
The studio has windows, but this space is not at the window.
There is some overhead fluorescent lighting, and artists can bring their own additional
lighting.
The space is available starting in Nov. and the rent for this space is
$187/month, which covers rent, electricity, and insurance. The other
artists in the studio are doing painting, printmaking, woven paper, and mixed media.
All artists in the building have the opportunity to participate in Open
Studios at Vernon Street each fall, and in Somerville Open Studios
each May. This year’s fall Open Studio dates are Dec 6-7.
I am looking for an artist who does plan to participate in the open studios,
since it’s a better draw for the studio, if all of us are showing.
If interested, please write and give some information about yourself and
your media, what kind of situation you are looking for, and any
questions.

SOMERVILLE ARMORY FAMILY FUN DAY - October/November 2014
Happy Halloween Everyone!
The Armory of Horror at Arts at the Armory is looking for volunteers to bring friendly but spooky faces to Family Fun Day, on Nov. 1st. If you want to go all-out scary, it's not too late to join the nightmare scare techs and deranged characters in the evening sessions of the haunted Maze (Oct 30 - Nov 1). We've got a great maze crew, but for Halloween weekend, we could use a few more helpers! If you are interested in joining us, please check off your availability here.
Volunteer Roles
Family Fun Day - Nov 1 (from 11:30 am to 4:30 pm)
Kid-friendly characters: The nightly maze is SCARY. For Family Fun Day, we need less creepy characters to inhabit the maze and hand out trick-or-treat candy.
Arts and crafts helpers: Oversee and assist our younger visitors with a range of arts and crafts activities.
Costumes (kid-friendly!) preferred.
The nightly Haunted Maze (Oct 30, 31, Nov 1; 5-10:30 pm)
Scary characters and Pranksters: Be the heart and soul of our haunted maze! Dress up in costume, lurk in wait, and SCARE our guests. Bring your own costume, or we can provide one.
Scare Techs: Don't want to be visible? We need people behind the scenes pulling levers to make the mechanical scares work their magic! Come dressed in black.
All Volunteers recieve two free tickets per day to give to friends and family for this event.

Hello there,
I hope this message finds you well. Over the years, Vernon Street Studios has been recognized as an artistic community well known throughout the area for the quality of work produced by artists with established reputations as well as exciting newcomers. Located in an historic 19th-century brick industrial building, Vernon Street housed the first group of artists in Somerville to open their studios to the public in 1974. This year marks our 40th Anniversary of Vernon Street Open Studios, one of the oldest open studios events in the Greater Boston area. To honor this milestone, we will be having a special exhibit from mid- November to December at the Somerville Museum, featuring some of the original artists at Vernon as well as current residents. These founding artists are also invited to participate in Vernon Street Open Studios on December 6th & 7th. It will be an exciting event that will highlight the evolution and transitions this creative landmark has encountered through the years. For promotional purposes, I have attached a link to the Vernon Street website for access to hi-res photos. Feel free to contact me if you would like to schedule an interview or to take a tour of the building. We hope that you can join us for this momentous occasion.
Sincerely,
Heather Balchunas

Celebrating 40 years of creativity & art ......
On December 6 & 7, Vernon Street Studios will host their annual open studios (which has become a much anticipated annual event).

During this showcase for the arts, mid-career and emerging artists working across a broad spectrum of fine art styles and craft media – including painting, photography, print-making, sculpture, glass, fiber, jewelry, furniture, and ceramics – will exhibit and sell their work ….just in time for the holiday season.
The Open Studios event allows attendees to learn about the creative process, interact with artists in the spaces where they create, purchase original artwork, and discover new talent.
The studios are located in the Rogers Foam facility, which is comprised of two buildings on the corner of Central and Vernon Streets. Parking is available in the large lot behind the buildings.

TWO OPEN POSITIONS IN ARTS & CULTURE - November 7, 2014
Dear Colleagues,
I write to let you know of exciting staffing changes at Barr Foundation in the arts and culture program. We will have two open positions in the Arts & Culture Program: Program Assistant and a newly created position of Program Officer.
Program Assistant
Lauren Woody, our great Program Assistant, will be leaving Barr Foundation to take a wonderful new position at Pilot House Family Philanthropy Office. If you have interacted with Lauren, you can appreciate how her gracious professionalism and astute insights have contributed mightily to our team and the Foundation.
Attached is the Program Assistant job announcement which has a deadline of November 7th. I ask you to quickly and thoughtfully reach out to your networks and help us find qualified candidates. You'll see that the position requires a minimum of two years working in arts and culture, so your contacts will be invaluable.
Please note that all inquiries, nominations, and applications may be directed in confidence to: Denise Gillespie, Director of Human Resources, barrjobs@barrfoundation.org.
Program Officer
As our portfolio has greatly grown, we are creating a Arts & Culture Program Officer position. We will be conducting a national search - the job announcement and search details will be released soon.
In the meanwhile, I also ask for your patience through this transition.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Warm regards,
San San

Cancer does not discriminate and it will inevitably affect each and every one of us in one way or another. The many emotions associated with this disease can both bring us together and tear us apart. Where there is loss there is anger, where there is strength there is support and where there is perseverance there is hope. In this call for art we want to see the many faces associated with The Big C. Entry fee.

FANEUIL HALL MARKETPLACE FOR ARTISTS - November 30, 2014
"I’m putting together an art show/sale event at the Marriott Custom House next to Faneuil Hall in Boston on Sunday November 30, 2014 (biggest shopping weekend of the year) and am looking for 40 Artists to participate.
Here are the details: I found an awesome classy place, the Marriott Custom House next to Faneuil Hall and steps outside the Blue Line T stop off of State St. It’s going to cost me $2500 with all the rental costs, bartender cost, security costs, taxes and fees. This works out to $62.50 per artist and I am making 0$ on this just to be 100% clear. For this price you’ll get the following:
1) Showcase your art in the famous Marriot Custom House from 1 PM to 8 PM.
a) Set up from 12 noon to 1 PM and break down after 8 PM, leaving by 9PM.
b) Since street parking is free on Sunday, and it’s the peak shopping weekend, Faneuil Hall area will be overflowing with shoppers.
2) I’ll rent out the 2nd and 3rd center open floor areas and the Counting Room.
a) 13 artists will fit on the 2nd floor open rotunda area.
b) 18 will fit in the Counting Room, behind the bar area (that why it’s important to rent a bartender; when people drink, they’re more likely to buy Art in a relaxed social setting).
c) 9 artists will fit on the 3rd floor and this will be where the music is.
d) I’m trying to even out the foot traffic so all areas get the same chance to makes sales and get noticed.
3) I’ll work on getting a few classical music players to play for free during our time here, to play in half hour blocks as back fill music. I was told many of the Berkley student might do this for free just so they can get exposure to play in public.
4) I’m looking for free help to promote this; it can be any free air play, free mention in the newspaper, and social media sites like Patch, Event Bright, Twitter, Facebook etc. I can post in a ton of Meetup.com groups but we need a lot more than that.
5) Looking to see if we should partner this with a local charity to get more publicity?
8) Its open and free to the public and we’d get a lot of the 84 Marriott Custom House residents who are, need I say, very well off to um really rich. This is some serious exposure - most of us never get to have exposure to a rich clientele.
9) Artist would use a 4 foot wide by 2 feet deep by 6 foot tall area to accommodate a table or easels. We'd like all Artists to sit/stand in front of their area, meaning the table etc. would be against the wall to make better use of more space. You’ll have to provide your own table, small folding chair and/or easels.
11) Please feel free to forward this to any artist you know. If any of you can offer any free help, I’m open to this.
12) Please contact me via e-mail bocchino@yahoo.com

HELP DESIGN MARTIAN CITIES OF THE FUTURE - October 25, 2014
Tomorrow The Department of Play and the Mobile Museum of American Artifacts will be at the Union Sq Farmers market 10-1 on the cobblestones near SCAT.
Come build structures with giant foam blocks created at the Artisans Asylum, and tour the vintage trailer that is MMoAA.
It's also knife sharpening day, so bring knives, tools, and scissors to have the sharpened while you shop..... or play!
MaryCat, market manager
All the Details here:
Block Party
Humans will establish a colony on Mars in 2024. Inspired by Somerville’s vibrant city life, experts on Martian urban development seek Somervillians’ help in designing the planet’s first cities.
Department of Play and The Mobile Museum of American Artifacts are hosting “Block Party” to enlist residents’ imagination and transmit the spirit of community to Mars.
Come join us on Saturday October 25th at the Union Square Farmer’s Market between 10am and 1pm. We’ll build prototypes of the future martian city out of giant foam blocks. The resulting models will be photographed. The Mobile Museum of American Artifacts, an itinerant museum of personal objects and their histories, will archive the pictures as part of their collection.
The Department of Play is a Cambridge-based collective. We create temporary play zones in cities. We believe in the transformative power of play and shared fun. By engaging socially diverse city residents through play, we question existing patterns of social segregation. We provide a space of encounter where people can experience and enjoy sharing each other’s differences.
The Mobile Museum of American Artifacts (MMoAA) is a touring museum of personal objects and their histories. Housed in a small vintage trailer, MMoAA travels from town to town, conducting an “archeology of the present” that uncovers objects of significant (and insignificant) connection to everyday American life.
Block Party play blocks were created at Artisan's Asylum in Somerville. The event is hosted by Union Square Farmers Market
Come build with us!

TWO ART-RELATED JOB OPENINGS - November 7, 2014
Warm regards,
San San

OLD HARDCOVER BOOKS NEEDED
We are looking for about 250 old hardcover books to be turned into a sculptural element for a theatrical project (they will get parts cut out and glue together, so they wouldn't be returnable). If anyone has old hardcover books to be given away, we'd be happy to take them off your hands. Project is for a registered non-profit ( Lyric Stage Company of Boston), so your donation wold be tax deductible, at least to thrift store value of the books. Please e-mail us if you have any to spare.

SNOWY OWL PROJECT FUNDRAISER - November 15, 2014
Shawn Carey and I are running a fundraiser to help out Norman Smith with the Snowy Owl Project.
The event will be held at the Blue Hills Trailside Museum on Saturday, November 15th starting at 4:30pm (detailed in the picture/flier below.) Norman will have a live Barn Owl (yes - Barn, not Barred), which I'm really looking forward to seeing.
An RSVP is requires as we need to know how much food to get... If you plan on going contact Shawn Carey at scarey@avfx.com.
I'm fairly sure that Norman broke his record last year when capturing (and relocating) the snowies from Logan Airport. If you want to read more about the Snowy Owl Project, you can go here:
http://www.massaudubon.org/get-outdoors/wildlife-sanctuaries/blue-hills-trailside-museum/snowy-owl-project
This webpage has a lot of information about GPS tracked Snowy Owls from around North America, including several that Norman has released:
http://www.projectsnowstorm.org/
We (Shawn and I) are doing this in place of our usual November Photo Share. So if you've been to that, you have some idea of what is involved. Fun people with a passion for nature combined with great photos (often from around the world!)
I hope you can make it, I expect it will be an interesting and fun evening - along with helping out a great project.

SOMERVILLE ARTIST SPACE AVAILABLE
Hello. Somerville Arts community.
I’d like to let you know there is an space opportunity that looks pretty good and we were told by the landlord that they would welcome studio artists.
The unit is 8-12 Main Street in Winter Hill. Here is more of a description:
The unit occupies the entire front above a liquor store and has great lighting. The unit consists of the larger, tiled room that is about 500 square feet plus two smaller rooms which are about 200 square feet each.
Unit also has a working kitchen, bathroom, and HVAC is all up to date. It is accessible by the front through a stairwell and a back second stairwell. As for abutters, no major issue with retail tenants on the ground floor. The other residential tenants on the second floor have Bible study three days a week, but nothing too major.
In terms of leasing, the owner is flexible with leasing. Ideally, would like $1000 a month gross and a longer-term lease. Utilities are all negotiable.
The unit is available now.
_____
If you are interested in this unit please contact me and Maxwell MacCarthy, cced above. Max is a new member of our City team and is a Urban Revitalization Specialist, within the Mayor's Office of Strategic Planning & Community Development.
Thank you. And hope you all are doing well.

A contract will be derived with expectations detailed as to the public benefit required of the position, which will be jointly determined with the final applicant and review committee. CAMBRIDGE ART ASSOCIATION EXHIBITION - October 10 - November 15, 2014
Cambridge Art Association
25 Lowell Street
Cambridge, MA 02138
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Erin Becker, Director
617.876.0246, ebecker@cambridgeart.org
October 9, 2014, Cambridge MA: The Cambridge Art Association is pleased to announce our 70TH Members' Prize Show, juried by Al Miner, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, on view October 10 through November 15, 2014, at University Place Gallery (124 Mt Auburn Street, Harvard Square).
From 220 pieces submitted by 133 Cambridge Art Association Artist Members, Mr. Miner selected 61 artworks in various media. Mr. Miner also awarded 5 Artist of the Year awards to: Bill Briggs, Jeanine Pastore, Zoe Perry-Wood, Amy Brett Waltch and Fay Lamson Hannon. These five artists will be featured in a group exhibit at the Cambridge Art Association in 2016. The show opens to the public on Friday, October 10, with a reception that evening from 6-8pm; awards will be presented at 7pm.
From Al Miner:
Serving as this year's juror for the Members' Prize Show was an honor and a pleasure; as a Cambridge resident myself I was especially pleased to see so many strong entries. I travel frequently in my role as an institutional curator. When visiting other cities I'm often asked, what is the art scene like in Greater Boston? I tell them what I've known for four years now: the art scene here may be small, but it's vibrant - a close knit community of talented people working in a variety of mediums who have a lot to say. How could a city with such esteemed museums, renowned art schools, and creative thinkers be any other way? This exhibition is a testament to that energy and diversity, which I sought to reflect when awarding the prizes. Abstraction, representation, beauty, humor, printmaking, painting, and photography can all be seen among them. Congratulations to all the artists whose works activate these walls and to the Cambridge Art Association as they celebrate seventy years serving this community and its artists.
Also on view:
Time Travelers - a small group show with work by Stephen Martin, Conny Goelz-Schmitt, and Lorraine Sullivan
October 2-30, 2014.
Upcoming Exhibits:
Motion Envisioned - a small group show with work by Bea Grayson, Bob Hesse, and Ruth Lieberherr
November 4-29, 2014. Opening reception, Saturday, November 15, 1-3pm at Kathryn Schultz Gallery
PLATINUM - Northeast Open Show, juried by Alise Upitis (Assistant Curator, MIT List Visual Art Center)

GLOUCESTER GALLERY EXHIBITION - October 11 - February 1, 2015
Portraits of a Working Waterfront at Cape Ann Museum
in Gloucester, Massachusetts October 11th through February 1st, 2015
http://www.capeannmuseum.org/
John Sanfilippo by Jim Hooper, digital inkjet print, 2013. Collection of the Cape Ann Museum. Gift of the photographer, 2014.
Gloucester, Massachusetts is famous for a plethora of things, two of which strike us: it is home to both America's original seaport and the oldest working art colony in North America. The marriage of these two will be taking place in the upcoming exhibition at Cape Ann Museum, Portraits of a Working Waterfront. The exhibit, which is presented in partnership with the Northeast Seafood Coalition, is made up of 75 photographs of men and women who make their livings working in the Gloucester seaport. The images were made by photographer Jim Hooper over an 18-month period and include a wide range of individuals involved in the in-shore and off-shore groundfish fishery and in the shore side businesses which support them. After successfully completing a large community-based portrait in Providence, Rhode Island, Hooper's friend Nonie Brady suggested he tell the story of the people of Gloucester. Hooper himself had always been drawn to the area by the city's famed past and by the determination and spirit of the people who draw their living from the sea today. "Nonie's idea struck a nerve," Hooper explained. "During my youth, I spent a season as first mate and 'puller' on a commercial tuna fishing boat in the Pacific. This formative experience gave me a special appreciation for the men and women who earn their livings from the sea, so the idea of photographing the people of Gloucester's fabled waterfront resonated with me completely." Hooper and a friend packed up his photography studio and moved into a building on Gloucester's Fish Pier where they made over 70 portraits of 150+ members of Gloucester's fishing fleet, a project that resulted in a powerful and thought-provoking portfolio of the people that live the narrative of Gloucester's fishing industry today. Portraits of a Working Waterfront will be on view Saturday, October 11th through Sunday, February 1st at the Cape Ann Museum. A series of educational and outreach programs will be held in conjunction with the exhibition, including an artist talk with Jim Hooper himself on Saturday, November 8th at 2pm at the museum.

"Imagine Paris as an urban medium," mixed media.

(aka Sanya) Colson-Inam.
"Imagine More" is an exhibit by Sandrine Colson-Inam (aka Sanya). In this exhibit, Sanya invites her viewers to see the invisible out of her work; to make up their own stories and let their mind imagine the end of stories her mixed media or paintings are starting for them. In this series Sanya expresses her personal ideas about emotional expression, resulting in richly textured abstract canvases in various color schemes that incorporate mixed-media elements. The compositions are abstract and emotional, referencing natural forms and movement, filled with bright paint swirls of color, playful paper cut-outs, and three-dimensional objects. An opening reception with the artist will be held at the ARTScape Small Gallery, October 9 from 6-8 p.m.

OPEN DOOR GALLERY SIDEWALK SAM EXHIBITION - July 28 - November 3, 2014
Artist Reception and ArtWeek Event: October 2, 2014, 4pm to 7pm - "Drawing In the Community".
Though renowned for his bold works of public art, the Open Door Gallery presents a personal side of Sidewalk Sam as seen through his sketches drawn at home while peering "Out My Window".
Artist's Statement
Glimpses and insights appear at moments that seem of little importance to anyone. Nonetheless, they impart a logic of their own, hidden truths that may (to quote Wordsworth) "teach you more of man, of moral evil and of good, than all the sages can."
Robert Guillemin is "Sidewalk Sam," the popular artist dedicated to creating art at the feet of pedestrians to inspire, promote spirit, enrich daily life, and address social issues. Sidewalk Sam has been called the "Johnny Appleseed of Art" and a "Pavement Picasso". He has been featured on the "Today Show", "Good Morning America", "Evening Magazine" and "Real People" and in hundreds of newspaper articles from coast to coast. He takes arts to the streets with charm and expertise that has thrilled millions of people for nearly forty years.
Through a magical blend of community art initiatives, broad-based participatory events and an unfailing joyful spirit, he organizes citizens, government agencies, cultural organizations, schools and corporations to work together for a common cause.
After studying at Boston College and receiving a bachelor's and master's degree in painting from Boston University, Robert followed a traditional path to becoming a successful artist. He had many commissions and exhibits, including one-man shows at Boston's Institute of Contemporary Art and the Rose Art Museum of Brandeis University, but the structure of the art scene was not a good fit for the artist he was becoming. He believed that art's focus on a small, elite audience caused it to turn its back on society at large. He realized that "art for art's sake" was not the same as "art for people's sake."
Sidewalk Sam was born when Robert stepped outside of traditional art venues and took his talents and enthusiasm to the streets. Choosing "Sidewalk Sam" as a nickname and using skills he had sharpened while a copyist at the Louvre Museum in Paris, he began to reproduce beloved masterpiece paintings on the sidewalks of Boston. "By staying in museums, galleries and the halls of academe, I felt I was missing the human experience. So I chose to bring art to the street and into daily life. I love crouching on the sidewalk, kneeling at the feet of people and having art look up to us for a change. I want art to serve people as a natural part of everyday life. I think art should bring people closer to each other and inspire people to a better vision of society."
Sidewalk Sam makes a connection with the public. They gather on street corners to watch him chalk on the ground. His art is in perfect harmony with the pedestrian experience - a polite, social event in the streets of our cities where there is often a need for civility. Using the streets as a canvas, Sidewalk Sam has rallied people around solutions to social problems, addressing issues like poverty, diversity, children and family and the environment. Now in a wheelchair, Sidewalk Sam still thinks big. He organizes large events where lots of people come together and create big artworks to show their common spirit. "I love to get people involved with each other", he says. "Art can bring society together." He adds, "Everything in modern life is so depersonalized - I'm just trying to personalize it a little."
The Open Door Gallery promotes the work of artists with disabilities and shifts our community's perceptions of ability while enjoying quality art.
