About the theme HATCH
We like to think of Somerville as a giant incubator, one in which ideas, dreams and art percolate and ultimately, hatch. And so, this year's ArtBeat theme is "hatch," a celebration of our city's creative endeavors. "Hatch" evokes many things: chirping chicks breaking out of their shells, emerging creative projects and scientific breakthroughs, and indie businesses busting onto the scene. Let's also consider "hatch" as a noun, as an opening or compartment in a ship, car or building—places where things can be stashed away from the public eye. TV fans might recall the mysterious "hatch" on Lost, a buried steel entryway to the subterranean Dharma Initiative Station. We look forward to your creative interpretations of this year's ArtBeat theme. It's time to bust out of our shells and let our ideas... hatch.
About the Inside-Out Gallery
The Inside-Out Gallery is located in the CVS Window in Davis Square, a unique space that allows the public to view an eclectic array of works from artists and local organizations each month. The mission of the Somerville Arts Council is to cultivate and celebrate the creative expressions of the Somerville community. Through innovative collaborations and quality programming we work to make the arts an integral part of life reflective of our diverse city.

HELP SAVE SOMERVILLE'S HISTORIC POST OFFICE - March 6, 2014
There will be a public meeting concerning the proposed sale of the Somerville Main Post Office and the fate of the interior 1937 mural, 'A Skirmish Between British and Colonists Near Somerville in Revolutionary Times' by artist Ross Moffett hosted by the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission on Thursday March 6 at 7pm at City Hall. All fellow Somervillians who want to see this public treasure preserved, rather than sold off to the highest bidder, should attend this meeting.
Across America, the US Postal Service is liquidating historic post offices in the name of budget cuts. Many of these buildings contain significant New Deal era public artworks, like in Somerville. USPS has identified our main post office in Union Square as the only such post office in Massachusetts to be auctioned off. (Why us?) While the buildings are often repurposed, the beautiful artworks inside often get removed from public display and effectively become restaurant or office decorations for the new owners, available for viewing by appointment only.
If you have any concerns about the privatization of Somerville's historic post office or the preservation of the irreplaceable Moffett mural, it is important that your voice be heard now. Very important. The fate of Somerville's most cherished historical public art piece could be determined in the coming weeks. Please take the opportunity to join your neighbors and attend this meeting on Thursday to discuss the steps being taken to preserve Somerville's magnificent New Deal art legacy for generations to come.
Public Meeting: Potential Adverse Effects of USPS Proposed Sale

CAMBRIDGE ART ASSOCIATION 2014 GALA - April 12, 2014
When was the last time you spent a night out supporting a great cause AND having fun?
On April 12th, Cambridge Art Association celebrates our annual Gala at a new venue, Arlington Town Hall. With delicious small plate meals, an open wine and beer bar, live music, and an auction, it promises to be a night to remember. Guests will also have the chance to participate in 'making' a piece of art!
Beyond tasty treats and fabulous auction items, why should you come? Because you will be actively supporting the work that the Cambridge Art Association has undertaken for nearly 70 years - supporting local art and artists. And here is what supporting the arts means to us:
It means presenting 20 exhibitions of work by local and regional emerging and mid-career artists each year.
It means creating access to local gallerists, collections managers, and arts professionals through our annual Portfolio Review Day, show juries, and more for our 450 Artist Members.
It means providing Artist Member scholarships to a half dozen - or more - artists who might not otherwise be able to participate.
It means sponsoring an annual scholarship to an outstanding student in need from Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School, allowing them to pursue their creative education. In 2013, we awarded $1000 to Christopher Baker-Albertz, who is studying architecture at Hampshire College.
It means exploring CREATIVITY at the Gately Youth Center in North Cambridge, encouraging students who might not make art to work together to CREATE with non-traditional materials.
And, it means being able to brainstorm and develop new, high-quality programs aimed to enforce the creative community we are so privileged to be a part of.
YOUR support makes all of this possible. Every time you read one of these emails, visit one of our galleries, like something on our Facebook page, or donate a dollar, YOU are voicing your support for the arts in Cambridge. I hope you will continue to support - and celebrate - with us on April 12th. I'll be there with my dancing shoes on!
Best regards,
Erin Becker
Norma Jean Calderwood Director
Cambridge Art Association
PS - invitations to the Gala are in the mail - be on the lookout for 4 Golden Tickets - redeemable for 2 tickets to the Gala, raffle prizes, and more!

Register for important parking information.
WELCOME SPRING BIRD WALK
Saturday, March 22
9 to 11 am
Register for meeting location and parking information
Spring is the season that birders dream about! Songbirds are abundant, active, vocal, and in full breeding plumage. During this walk we may see birds courting, building nests, defending territories, or eating voraciously in preparation for the next stage of their northward migration. Beginners are welcome. We have binoculars to lend and will show you how to use them.
THE MEADOW PROJECT: A MOVIE
Sunday, March 30
2 to 4 pm
Maynard Ecology Center, basement of Neville Place
650 Concord Avenue
If you are tired of mowing your lawn or looking at the monotony of grass, this film may inspire you. It addresses ecological problems caused by the extensive planting of non-native grass lawns in the United States. Through her own experience, producer Catherine Zimmerman shares her insight on turf alternatives that offer great health, aesthetic, and ecological benefits. We will have refreshments and time for discussion.

LIVE THEATER IN SOMERVILLE - March 13, 2014
For the first time, Bare Bones: Staged Readings at Theatre@First brings you three short plays about assumptions and misunderstandings:
Trifles, written by Susan Glaspell and directed by Deirdre Purcell
What could have caused Mrs. Wright to murder her husband? The Sheriff is sure she did, but only the women can see the reasons that might have caused this lonely wife to make her desperate decision. Exploring gender roles, marital relationships, and the everyday experiences of women, this play represents the voices of women breaking through in the pre-suffrage U.S., but also highlights issues of inequality and oppression that are still valid today.
Ludlow Fair, written by Lanford Wilson and directed by Andrea Humez
When you're having a romantic crisis of conscience, it's good to have a roommate to help you work through your feelings, but it's tiresome to have a roommate who insists on working through her feelings all the time.
Small World, an original work written by Josh Coleman and directed by Anna Smith
Small World is a comedy taking place during a chain of break-ins occurring on the Cape. When a young couple attempt the home of an elderly husband and wife, they believe they have met their unlikely match - but somehow find a certain common ground...
ONE NIGHT ONLY!
March 13, 2014 at Unity Somerville, 6 William Street, Somerville MA
SUGGESTED DONATION $5

Do you have an idea for a great celebration?

Have you ever wanted to host a neighborhood party? Here is your chance!
East Somerville Main Streets, in partnership with Somerville Arts Council, will be facilitating monthly cultural block parties in the new Chuckie Harris Park, behind the Senior Center on Cross Street as part of the 2-year This is East, cultural placemaking project. Our mission is to create a "Cultural Corner" on Cross Street East and share the rich diversity of East Somerville in a family-friendly party atmosphere. Block parties will incorporate East Somerville's traditions in storytelling, music, dance, cooking, and cultural and crafting skill shares. We are currently seeking community members to produce, co-host and participate in these neighborhood gatherings.
The monthly block parties will incorporate:
Cultural traditions - traditions representing the diversity of East Somerville, for example wine making, family rituals, historic events like May Day
Storytelling - sharing family and neighborhood stories
Music - traditional music from your country of origin or from this neighborhood
Dance - family group dance and performance
Family recipes - an opportunity to share your best culinary delights

More about the THIS IS EAST project:
This month marks the beginning of activities for a two-year grant in East Somerville funded by the National Endowment for the Arts "Our Town" Grant
The project, titled This is East, aims to both celebrate the cultural assets of East Somerville and increase the vibrancy of the neighborhood's public spaces and streetscapes through free events, workshops and public art projects that capture the stories of East Somerville residents, artisans and business owners. The grant's mission is to further highlight the East Somerville area as an important cultural destination both in Somerville and in the Greater Boston area. A robust calendar of events will soon be made public and will include a series of cultural block parties, a mural project led by Mudflat Pottery School, and various other arts events.
Cultural Block Party Producers!
*Rescheduled*
COMMUNITY INFO SESSION
Weds. 2/24, 6:30-8pm
Mudflat Studio, 81 Broadway
Do you have an idea for a great celebration?
Do you have cultural traditions reflective of East Somerville to share?
The Producer Application will be made available at the meeting. Producers will be able to apply for funding and production support. If you are unable to attend the meeting, please email

2014 Annual Appeal!!
Support the West End Museum!
2013 was another year of significant growth and expansion for the West End Museum. This year alone, the Museum mounted three major exhibits in our large exhibition area, as well as four exhibits in our Members' Gallery.
We have a fundraising goal of $50,000 for our inaugural appeal. Any amount, large or small, that you can donate will help to ensure that the Museum can continue to provide a rich experience to the West End community as well as the city of Boston. Your donation is critical, not only with assisting the Museum in providing fresh programming, but especially in keeping the Museum and its mission alive.

TUFTS UNIVERSITY ART GALLERY EXHIBITION - January 30 - May 18, 2014
Seeing Glacial Time: Climate Change in the Arctic, exhibiting artists:
Subhankar Banerjee
Olaf Otto Becker
Resa Blatman
Diane Burko
Caleb Cain Marcus
Gilles Mingasson
Joan Perlman
Camille Seaman
Exhibition eBook: http://issuu.com/tuftsartgallery/docs/seeingglacialtime
Seeing Glacial Time examines how eight contemporary artists employ the “real time” of photography to visualize the largely imperceptible, gradual changes in “glacial time” from the bellwether Arctic region. Some utilize scientific and appropriated photography as source material, while others depart from documentary traditions to create expressive images suggestive of a
melancholic Sublime. This timely exhibition of paintings, photographs and a video installation introduces Boston audiences to artists who have either not been seen before in the area or have created new work for this occasion.
