SOMERVILLE MURAL DEDICATION CEREMONY - December 2, 2012
New Art Panels by Vernon Street Artists Installed On Rogers Foam Building in Somerville
Mural dedication event Sunday December 2 at 11:30 am
Nine artists from Vernon Street Studios have created new mural panels recently installed on the Central Street-facing side of the Rogers Foam building in Somerville. The artists—Heather Balchunas, Michelle Carter, Nicole Duennebier, David Fallon, Andrew Fish, Jen Fuchel, Tova Speter, Gee Wong, and Dorothy Zarren— were selected to showcase the great diversity and high quality of work produced within the building and to help identify the building as an "art space" to passersby who may not be aware of what takes place inside our walls. We hope the new panels will add color to Central Street and serve to brighten and inspire the community for many years to come.
The new mural panels will be publically celebrated at a Mural Dedication Event on Sunday December 2 at 11:30 am at the corner of Central Street and Vernon Street in Somerville. All are encouraged to attend. This local media event will kickoff the second day of Vernon Street Open Studios – an annual event during which 70+ artists within the building will open their doors to the public to share their work. The Open Studios event on Sunday will take place from 12pm – 6pm and is a great opportunity for the community to view original artwork and purchase unique holiday gifts.
Vernon Street Studios is a community well known throughout the area for the quality of work produced by artists with established reputations as well as exciting newcomers. Located in a historic 19th-century brick industrial building, Vernon Street housed the first group of artists in Somerville to open their studios to the public in 1975. Open Studios allows attendees to learn about the creative process, interact with artists in the spaces where they create, purchase original artwork, and discover new talent.
This mural project was funded with support from Rogers Foam Corporation, and the Somerville Arts Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Rogers Foam has shown great investment in Somerville's artists for over 25 years by transforming their excess space into art studios housing over 100 local artists.

SOMERVILLE NAVE GALLERY ARTIST TALK - December 9, 2012
Artist Talk
Sunday, Dec 9, 2012
Nave Gallery
155 Powderhouse Blvd
Somerville, MA 02144
2-3 pm panel discussion
3-4 pm coffee reception
Color and texture, layers upon layers, all stitched, knitted, crocheted or taped together...
With traditional and nontraditional fibers, and through conventional and unconventional processes, participating artists in Threads Bared--Art Inspired by Fiber, have woven together an exhibition that is both whimsical and contemplative. Four of the 15 artists in the show will come together for a panel discussion on their work, their unique methods and materials, fiber art, and more.
Join us for this artist talk, come play in a large crocheted jellyfish/octopus/amazing installment piece, and get all your burning questions about fiber art answered.
Participating Artists:
Susan BerstlerLocal artist and Nave Gallery guru, Susan creates magic from recycled plastic bags, piling layer upon layer of color, texture and even text to form a coherent whole. The transformation of the bags from trash to sculpture invites the viewer to expand their own definitions of what is and is not art.
Merill ComeauMerill is a mixed media artist examining themes of decline, regeneration and bloom. Drawing on her background in interior design, Merill creates large-scale Gardens of Eden out of repurposed materials--mother-in-law’s blouse, worn blue jeans, cast off sheets, plastic mesh vegetable bags, artists’ brush cleaning rags, vintage linens and brightly colored fabric samples of discontinued patterns.
Lauren O'NealDrawing inspiration from a variety of sources, including theatrical design, dance, and architecture, Lauren looks at the connections between embodiment and sensory engagement, and how physical manifestations of cognitive and emotional states-of-being become patterns of thought, stance, gesture, and communication. Her installation in the show is primarily about communication and attachment, things that we desire that are often tenuous conditions at best.
Amy PettUsing steel wire and colored copper wire, Amy knits together standing and hanging sculptures by regular circular knitting. Manipulating fibers with a mind of their own into clear and complex lines, Amy explores ideas of fecundity, female sexuality, and natural forms.

SOMERVILLE CENTER FOR THE ARTS SEEKS T-SHIRT DESIGN - November 30, 2012
The Center for Arts at the Armory is looking for a fun and funky new T-shirt design! If you've seen our current shirts, you'll understand why: they've got the Armory logo on them. Period. We need something more creative, and we're looking for your help...
From now till Nov. 30th, we're accepting submissions in the first-ever Armory "Design Our T-shirt" contest.
All entries will be highlighted on our website. The winner gets two free shirts, and the pride from seeing their design on the official Armory T-shirts.
Guidelines:
- What does the Armory mean to you? The building itself, the range of artistic programs, the Café, the cultural and community events... We're looking for a fun design, but one that's recognizably the Armory, however you choose to make that connection.
- Every design will be considered, but one-color, one-side-of-the-shirt designs are slightly preferred (due to financial constraints on producing the shirts later).
- Other than that, the sky's the limit....
To submit:
Email: lruscio@artsatthearmory.org (image, photo, scan, etc. - any common file format)
OR
Mail a paper sketch to: Armory T-shirt Contest, The Center for Arts at the Armory, 191 Highland Ave Ste 1A, Somerville, MA, 02143

Hello Studio friends!
In addition to directing the activities at Third Life Studio, I am the founder and artistic
director of Libana, an internationally renowned women's world music ensemble.
Last year, after returning from our incredible tour to North India, we produced a Fair Trade
Holiday Marketplace that showcased some of the amazingly beautiful artistic creations
of women we had met on our journey in Rajasthan (at Barefoot College) and in Gujarat
(members of the artisan collectives of SEWA).
WE HAD SO MUCH FUN!
It also felt so right to do on so many levels that we decided we simply had to do it again!
This year we have expanded and are including even more international fair trade women's
artisan organizations--we are so excited about all the beauty that women create worldwide!
By shopping for your friends and family at our Holiday Marketplace, your gifts will make a
profound difference in the quality of life for women and their families around the world.
So bring your friends and neighbors and come explore the traditional and contemporary
crafts of the world's women this year--we hope to see you there!
(And please forward this to all of your friends!!!)
Come support Libana AND women artisans of India (Rajasthan, Gujarat),
Kashmir, Ghana, Rwanda, El Salvador and Guatemala!

Live Auction Starts at 7:30 pm
For one night only, Massachusetts College of Art and Design will be exhibiting and auctioning artworks curated by jurors Camilo Alvarez, Dina Deitsch, and Kanishka Raja.

The event will be held in 10,000 square feet of raw space (‘the Box’) on the site of the former premises of the Social Security Administration in Somerville, MA, and feature DJs, food and drink donated by local restaurants, and an exhibition and auction of artwork by 74 artists.
MassArt’s MFA is the top-rated program in the state and one of the top 25 in the US. Last year MassArt’s Graduate Programs offered more than $350,000 in scholarships to accepted students.
The exhibition and auction will provide valuable exposure and income (up to 50% of the auction proceeds) for MassArt students, alumni and friends as well as a new source of support for MassArt’s graduate scholarships. 100% of MassArt’s proceeds will benefit graduate scholarships.

The restaurant's bar opens at 4pm and dinner reservations begin at 5pm. Visitors are encouraged to make reservations ahead of time for both evenings. Artist Traeger DiPietro's work is on display.

SEEDS NEEDS
How Do They Get Where They’re Going and What Do They Need to Start Growing?
Saturday, November 10
1 to 3 pm
Neville Place front door
650 Concord Avenue
We’ll spend some time collecting seeds in the wildflower meadow and then go inside the Maynard Ecology Center where we’ll take a close up look at them under the microscope to observe their interesting shapes and forms. We’ll consult references to determine whether freezing, soaking, or gashing their seed coats will help the baby plants inside start to grow. Come dressed for the outdoors.
FASCINATING FUNGI OF FRESH POND
Sunday, November 11
2 to 4:30 pm
Neville Place front door
650 Concord Avenue
Mycologist Lawrence Millman has identified 216 mushroom species at Fresh Pond Reservation. For the past eight years he has led similar Fresh Pond mushroom forays that give participants the chance to add to this list as well as learn more about the world of fungi. He'll also be selling (and signing!) copies of his beautiful book Fascinating Fungi of New England, the first guidebook devoted exclusively to New England mushrooms.
MIGRATORY BIRD WALK
Saturday, November 17
9 to 11 am
Street end of Neville Place driveway
650 Concord Avenue
We will look for migrating songbirds and waterfowl that stop at Fresh Pond Reservation to rest and feed while on the way south for the winter. We may also see a variety of year-round avian residents. We have a telescope for close looks at ducks on the water, and binoculars to lend you if you don’t have your own. Beginners are welcome!
GETTING READY FOR WINTER
What Are the Water-Based Creatures Doing?
Sunday, November 18
1 to 3 pm
Black’s Nook gate closest to Concord Avenue
MAP at http://www.friendsoffreshpond.org/images/pdfmap.PDF
First we will conduct a census of insects, fish, frogs, turtles, and birds. Then we will go inside the Maynard Ecology Center to look closely at what we find and to read some interesting books and references on how the creatures adapt, migrate, or change form to cope with seasonal changes. We’ll make a poster to hang in the Ranger Station so others can find out what we learned. This is an excellent program for curious people of all ages; those under 14 must be accompanied by a participating adult. Come dressed to be outside.
