FRESH POND RESERVATION EVENTS - November 2012

These events are FREE and open to the public. Children are welcome in the company of an adult. SEEDS NEEDS How Do They Get Where They’re Going and What Do They Need to Start Growing? Saturday, November 10 1 to 3 pm Neville Place front door 650 Concord Avenue We’ll spend some time collecting seeds in the wildflower meadow and then go inside the Maynard Ecology Center where we’ll take a close up look at them under the microscope to observe their interesting shapes and forms. We’ll consult references to determine whether freezing, soaking, or gashing their seed coats will help the baby plants inside start to grow. Come dressed for the outdoors. FASCINATING FUNGI OF FRESH POND Sunday, November 11 2 to 4:30 pm Neville Place front door 650 Concord Avenue Mycologist Lawrence Millman has identified 216 mushroom species at Fresh Pond Reservation. For the past eight years he has led similar Fresh Pond mushroom forays that give participants the chance to add to this list as well as learn more about the world of fungi. He'll also be selling (and signing!) copies of his beautiful book Fascinating Fungi of New England, the first guidebook devoted exclusively to New England mushrooms. MIGRATORY BIRD WALK Saturday, November 17 9 to 11 am Street end of Neville Place driveway 650 Concord Avenue We will look for migrating songbirds and waterfowl that stop at Fresh Pond Reservation to rest and feed while on the way south for the winter. We may also see a variety of year-round avian residents. We have a telescope for close looks at ducks on the water, and binoculars to lend you if you don’t have your own. Beginners are welcome! GETTING READY FOR WINTER What Are the Water-Based Creatures Doing? Sunday, November 18 1 to 3 pm Black’s Nook gate closest to Concord Avenue MAP at http://www.friendsoffreshpond.org/images/pdfmap.PDF First we will conduct a census of insects, fish, frogs, turtles, and birds. Then we will go inside the Maynard Ecology Center to look closely at what we find and to read some interesting books and references on how the creatures adapt, migrate, or change form to cope with seasonal changes. We’ll make a poster to hang in the Ranger Station so others can find out what we learned. This is an excellent program for curious people of all ages; those under 14 must be accompanied by a participating adult. Come dressed to be outside.
