SUMMER SHAKESPEARE IN SOMERVILLE - August 21-30, 2014
THEATRE@FIRST PRESENTS
HENRY
THE 4TH
Summer Shakespeare heats up in Somerville
Theatre@First's Henry the 4th combines two of Shakespeare's greatest history plays—and a feisty female Falstaff--into one thrilling night of theatre at Unity Somerville on August 21-30.
After seizing the English throne, King Henry IV rebuilds the kingdom and despairs over his heir's dissipated life in the London slums. Prince Hal spends his time carousing with the bawdy Joan Falstaff and her gang of thieves and misfits, but he is far more than the scoundrel he seems. When the king's former allies rebel against him, Hal plans to redeem himself in his father's eyes. By facing Hotspur, the rebel leader, Hal at last has a chance to prove himself!
Starring Melissa Ehlers as Dame Joan Falstaff, the cast of talented local actors features exciting newcomers and familiar Theatre@First faces including Mike Haddad as King Henry, Jared Hite as Prince Hal, Ari Herbstman as the rebel Hotspur, Renée Johnson as Mistress Quickly and Andrea Aptecker as Lady Northumberland.
Director Shelley MacAskill continues to explore the gender and scope of Henry IV after adapting and directing an all-female one-act version for
Festival@First: Shaken-Up Shakespeare in 2010. She has worked with Theatre@First since 2007 as producer, designer, or crew for numerous productions.
Since its founding in 2003, Theatre@First has become Somerville’s community theatre, filling a vital niche in the thriving Davis Square arts scene and drawing on the talents and support of local individuals and organizations.

Art, Green Space and the Public Realm: 4 Speakers Featured at 2nd Symposium on Thursday, July 31
The Space in Between: Art, Green Space and the Public Realm
The second of three neighborhood-organized symposia features four speakers to share ideas that reimagine the public realm in Union Square.
Union Square Neighbors (USN) in collaboration with Union Square Main Streets (USMS) will hold the second of three neighborhood-organized events entitled The Space in Between: Art, Green Space and the Public Realm, on Thursday, July 31 at 7:30 p.m. USN and USMS have asked members of the creative community in Somerville and around greater Boston to talk about projects that make public spaces delightful for all. Four speakers will give short 8-minute presentations about built work or work in progress followed by a small group discussion. This week’s speakers include:
Rob Trumbour, founder of Art Forming, a Boston-based collective of artists, educators and design professionals who are rooted in the conception, fabrication, and installation of multi-sensory public art and architecture intended to foster individual contemplation and open public dialog.
Jason Turgeon,a resident of Roxbury’s Fort Hill neighborhood and the producer of the free Greenway arts festival Figment. Jason is also a national expert on energy efficient sewage treatment, anaerobic digestion, and
the complexities of modern waste management.
Shauna Gillies-Smith, Founding Principal of Ground, a landscape design practice with a focus on artful landscapes and a specialization in urban projects and large-scale green roofs.
Peter Rose, Principal at Peter Rose + Partners, an internationally-recognized, award-winning architecture and urban design firm. The scale of his projects has varied from large urban design projects, such as the Old Port of Montreal Waterfront Master Plan, to smaller renovations and additions.
The first “Space in Between” symposium on July 24 drew approximately 30 people who live and work in Union Square. Participants generated diverse ideas on art and green space that help identify Union Square
and facilitate people’s participation in the space. Ideas included a discussion on the unexpected surprises, imagery, and functional infrastructure that give Union Square its character. Ideas for the future included pop-up installations, pocket gardens and rooms, human scale and auditory projects, and use of paths and alleys to create spaces that allow for interaction, participation, and interpretation.
USN and USMS welcome everyone to attend. The presentations and ideas generated in the symposia will be documented and available online through both USN and USMS websites as a resource for City planning efforts and the US2 master developer team.
The events will be held in Union Square at:
CrossFit Somerville
35 Prospect Street
Somerville, MA 02143
Upcoming Dates:
Thursday, July 31, 2014 7:30pm-9:00pm

BOSTON FIRST FRIDAY OPEN STUDIOS - August 2014
Hello-
(See below for your complementary PhotoShop training consultation, as well as the limited time offer to learn how you can benefit from drum scanning of film and original art.)
I would like to invite you to view my photography and printing services at First Friday Open Studios, this Friday, August 1st, from 5-9 pm, at 450 Harrison Ave., Studio 227, Boston, MA.
For the next 2 months, I am proud and excited to also host the photography of Stephen Lewontin, a photographer, engineer, painter, and former photojournalist who lives and works in the Boston area. I have worked closely with Steve preparing the photos for this exhibit, beginning with drum scanning his vintage slides and negatives and consulting on photo selection. I edited the images to emphasize and clarify his vision, reviewed the proofs with him, and did the final prints and framing. Those of you who have been in my studio over the last year will have seen proofs of his dramatic photos from Chile, Central America and around the world!

In this workshop we'll introduce a couple of options we use at Parts and Crafts, share our experiences on the pros and cons of each, and hear from some homeschooling families on what's worked for them.
CSCL is currently enrolling for Fall 2014!
If you're interested in coming by for a visit, email contact@partsandcrafts to set up a time in August! Visiting hours are 3-5:30 (i.e. after camp hours) -- please call ahead and we'll arrange for a staff member to give you a tour and talk a bit about how the program works. Day visits are possible but need to be arranged in advance.

CAMBRIDGE RADIO STATION SEEKS DESIGNS - August 22, 2014
WMBR is looking for designs to use on fundraising swag.
WMBR is a college/community radio station affiliated with MIT. We are a local, non-commercial station, broadcasting at 88.1fm, and online at
http://wmbr.org
We are 100% volunteer, with no paid staff. This is rare - even among other local college and public stations. Our only sources of income are listener donations and a small stipend from MIT.
Each November, we host a week-long fundraising drive to replenish our capital budget and keep the station on air for another year. Typically, we offer various wmbr-branded premiums to donors -- t-shirts, bumper stickers, and the like -- as our way of saying thanks and for them to wear in support of the station.
Each year we choose different designs for these premiums, which is where you come in! We are reaching out to the local artist community for logos or other images. While we can't provide cash payment, any designers whose images we use will receive publicity via on-air mentions and on our website, as well as ample samples of their work on the actual premiums. In addition, you'll be helping out one of the premiere radio stations in the region.
If you're interested in helping us out, please respond by Friday, August 22. Reply to us at
premiums@wmbr.org
with a jpeg or link to your proposed design. Rough drafts are welcome if accompanied by examples of other finished work.
You can see examples of previously used artwork here:
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=43949&id=22335947090
(you don't need to have a facebook account to view these)
We've had a great response when we've reached out to this community in previous years. Thanks for your consideration and please feel free to pass this along to anyone you feel might be interested!

SOMERVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOOK DISCUSSION - July 17, 2014
Join us July 17 at 7 pm when Boston University historian Linda Heywood discusses the book Prince Among Slaves, the true story of Abdul-Rahman, a Muslim prince kidnapped and sold into slavery in antebellum Mississippi.
A chance encounter with a physician who had known Abdul-Rahman's father
in Africa led to a national campaign for Abdul-Rahman's emancipation. After being freed Abdul became a celebrity speaker on the abolitionist circuit. His literacy in Arabic and his royal origins challenged contemporary stereotypes about Africans.
Linda Heywood is Professor of African-American Studies and History at Boston University. She is theco-author of Central Africans, Atlantic Creoles and the Foundation of America. She served as a consultant for the Smithsonian Institution exhibit African Voices and the PBS series African American Lives.
This program is made possible by a Muslim Journeys grant awarded to the Library by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association. We are grateful for their generosity!

Historic Somerville ( a local non-profit) and the City of Somerville's Historic Preservation Commission are looking for additional volunteers to open up the 1804 Milk Row Cemetery to the public for a couple of times during the seasonal months, August through November (weather permitting). The very compact Cemetery is located on the periphery of Union Square , on Somerville Ave. next to Demoulas Market Basket.
The goal is to enable folks to come inside the normally locked gates (due to the fragility of the site) and answer questions or lead short tours. The Docent Program times are one Sunday afternoon (1-4PM) and one weekday evening (6-8pm during daylight hours) per month. The tour duty of each volunteer is less than this as it is spread out over the entire volunteer group. Volunteers are given public information brochures to distribute about the Cemetery, and will initially learn about the history of the site via an informative DVD as well as training by other docents. Docents are encouraged to wear clothing (which may be supplied by HS) appropriate to the time period of the Cemetery, late 18th or 19th century. Two volunteers act as docents at each opening of the cemetery and should be 18 years old or older. Prior experience is not required, but volunteers should have a strong interest in Somerville history and be sociable.
If you are interested, please submit your contact information to admin@historicsomerville.org along with a brief statement of why you would like to become a docent and any background experience you have in this area. Please include your dates of availability for Sunday afternoons or a weekday eve. from August through November to the best of your knowledge. Thank you!

PANOPTICON GALLERY ARTIST TALK - July 19, 2014
Panopticon Gallery will be hosting an intimate artist talk with Michael Donnor on Saturday, July 19th at Noon. He will be discussing the work in his current solo exhibition, Michael Donnor: Paper Truths.
Read Elin Spring's review of the show on her blog, What Will You Remember.
Here is the great exhibition statement written by Dan Estabrook:
"Michael Donnor doesn’t believe in objectivity, and according to quantum physics, neither does the rest of the universe. We can know the position or the momentum of a subatomic particle, but not both, and its state can be changed simply by how and when we observe it. So how do we know the world from the world we see? In many ways, the photograph has always been the perfect expression of this question. Photography has been a known fiction ever since William Henry Fox Talbot staged a shot of his own library out on the lawn (better light out there, you see.) And yet photographs are still used for evidence in court, as proof in the newspaper. Are they the Truth, or are they a Lie? Or, in some quantum-like state, could they be both?
Donnor’s artwork is happy to leave this question unanswered, by letting his drawings and interventions into his own photographs guide our understanding – and misunderstanding – of the pictures. They are little fictions based on facts, and make a universe of their own. Still, it is important to know that these are, in the end, photographs: in every image, something has happened that will likely not happen the same way again. We see it in the momentary patterns of stars or birds, in the phase of the moon. Even his ephemeral chalk drawings have their moment, too. All it would take to erase them is one strong gust of wind, or a hundred years of time. And to the universe, really, what’s the difference?"
Michael Donnor has exhibited both locally and nationally and his work is in numerous private collections. Donnor's photographs are available through Panopticon Gallery. For more information about Michael Donnor, or to acquire original photographs, please contact: jason@panopticongallery.com.

“Ice on the sill
and the snow
they haunt me still”
—Brown Bird
Of all the seasons, winter is the one most left up for interpretation. Some shudder at the blasts that burn, snap, nip, and sting; the howls of flurries in the dead of night; winds whisking air to swirls; the fury of things at rest. Others consider contemplation in a perfect storm, rumination in a calm coat of snow, the composition of hushed aches and quiet sorrows in inert lands. In 'Winter,' the Nave Gallery explores the degrees of the frost season—the frenzy of ice, the serenity and glow of colors confined, the luminosity within the floe, the severity of a flash of diamonds, the freeze that lights fire to our cheeks, the sound of every footstep packing in a heavy heart, the rime that makes us shiver and brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Artists
Elizabeth Alexander, Christina Balch, Jeff Bartell, Sarah Bilotta, Sarah Cecil, Laura Fischman, Sharon Freed, Beth Galston, Blake Hiltunen, Brian Kaplan, Anne Lilly, Chris Maliga, Lindsay Metivier, Laura Miner, Cary Rapaport, Zak Alexander Rose, Sophia Sobers, Sarah Wentworth, Timothy Wilson, Nancy Wisti Grayson
Music
In gratitude to Dave Lamb, to all the beauty he graced upon this earth, to the craft and wisdom he left in his wake, songs by Brown Bird (www.brownbird.net) will play throughout the duration of this exhibit. 'Winter' is dedicated to him.
Curators
Jenn Harrington and Susan Berstler

SOMERVILLE INSIDE-OUT GALLERY EXHIBITION - July 9, 2014
Somerville Arts Council Fellowship winner Nicole Duennebier has installed
"HATCH" the series of large scale Dioramas in Davis Sq. Inside-OUT gallery (the CVS windows).
Natural phenomenon—dermoid cysts, fungus, invasive flora/fauna—and her love of candied, old-master, opulence have a constant presence in her work. Nicole’s attention to detail is evident and continues to explore the fact that nature itself, or anything living really, never totally allows you to have a perfectly idealized experience. Inspired by this year’s ArtBeat theme, she uses the same principles found in her painting style to create a series of large scale dioramas, entitled “HATCH”. This series features dynamic collection of eight contributing artists which is seamlessly integrated into Duennebier’s macabre aesthetic.
TONIGHT (WED) July 9 at 7pm
Join Nicole and the other contributing artists at the Inside-OUT Gallery (Davis Square CVS window) for a small reception/meet and greet to view these lovely works.
Contributing Artists:
Meghan Howland,
Susan Richards Hallstein,
Derek Smith Luke,
Christina Balch,
Corinne Reid,
Erin Bisceglia,
Denise Karabinus,
and Caitlin Duennebier.
About the Artist and Curator
Nicole Duennebier was born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1983. She received her Bachelor in Fine Arts at Maine College of Art with a major in painting. Her BFA thesis work was most influenced by research about the coastal ecosystems of Maine. In 2006, she was awarded the Monhegan Island Artists Residency. On the island she continued her work with sea life. Duennebier saw a natural connection between the darkness and intricacy of undersea regions and the aesthetic of 16th century Dutch still-life painting. In 2008 she moved to Boston. She is currently exhibiting with the 13FOREST gallery in Arlington, Massachusetts.

SOMERVILLE ZONING FORUMS - July 15, 2014
Please plan to attend these two forums:
An Arts and Zoning workshop
You may have heard that the City’s Planning Department is reexamining zoning for entire City. Why should this concern the arts community? Zoning is key as to how the City determines what type of use and redevelopment is done in various neighborhoods in a City.
The Planning Department has created a series of workshops to address various topics relating to zoning. On Thursday, July 10th a specific session on Zoning and the Arts and Creative Economy will be held.
Please come out. While the workshop session starts at 4 p.m. it continues until 7:30 and from my understanding the information is not being delivered in a sequential format, i.e. if you can’t arrive until 6:30 you will not miss anything.
All sessions will be held at 50 Middlesex Ave., behind Style Caf頩n the Public Storage building at Assembly Square
General information can be found here: http://www.somervillebydesign.com/category/zoning/
Specific information on the series can be found here: http://www.somervillema.gov/news/city-seeking-community-input-proposed-zoning-ordinance-through-public-workshops
A Create the Vote forum

Please join us Tuesday, July 15 for Create the Vote Candidates’ Forum on Arts, Culture, and Creativity at the Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts in Worcester.

SOMERVILLE CULTURAL EVENTS - July 2014
Hello Somerville cultural community. In the spirit of our Independence I want to reiterate two upcoming forums in which you can express you artistic independence---your expression and your concerns to leaders in the City and to the next potential governor.
All sessions will be held at 50 Middlesex Ave., behind Style Café in the Public Storage building at Assembly Square
General information can be found here: http://www.somervillebydesign.com/category/zoning/
Specific information on the series can be found here: http://www.somervillema.gov/news/city-seeking-community-input-proposed-zoning-ordinance-through-public-workshops
A Create the Vote forum
Over the next five months, the Somerville Arts Council is partnering with MASSCreative and the Create the Vote Coalition to ensure that a thriving arts, culture, and creative sector is part of the discussion and debate during the 2014 gubernatorial election.
I want to personally invite you to join the statewide creative community in showing the candidates that arts matter in this election.
Please join us Tuesday, July 15 for Create the Vote Candidates’ Forum on Arts, Culture, and Creativity at the Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts in Worcester.
And be sure to indicate if you want to ride on the chartered bus; we’ll leave in the late afternoon and return early evening. Details in the RSVP link below.

Dan Bartman from the planning department provided a good overview below.
At the July 10th session on “Zoning for the Arts and Creative Economy” we will be presenting/discussing the buildings types for the fabrication district and the new “creative industries” use category. We need the artist/creative economy community to join us so we can identify hopes for the future and existing problems so that we can problem solve/brainstorm solutions together.
We want to enable Somerville’s artists and creative businesses to thrive but many of the challenges they face on a daily basis remain hidden from plain sight (when considering regulation). We hope to shed light on them at this session.
I hope to see you on Thursday the 10th.
