SOMERVILLE HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION SEEKS VOLUNTEERS
Historic Somerville ( a local non-profit) and the City of Somerville's Historic Preservation Commission are looking for additional volunteers to open up the 1804 Milk Row Cemetery to the public for a couple of times during the seasonal months, August through November (weather permitting). The very compact Cemetery is located on the periphery of Union Square , on Somerville Ave. next to Demoulas Market Basket.
The goal is to enable folks to come inside the normally locked gates (due to the fragility of the site) and answer questions or lead short tours. The Docent Program times are one Sunday afternoon (1-4PM) and one weekday evening (6-8pm during daylight hours) per month. The tour duty of each volunteer is less than this as it is spread out over the entire volunteer group. Volunteers are given public information brochures to distribute about the Cemetery, and will initially learn about the history of the site via an informative DVD as well as training by other docents. Docents are encouraged to wear clothing (which may be supplied by HS) appropriate to the time period of the Cemetery, late 18th or 19th century. Two volunteers act as docents at each opening of the cemetery and should be 18 years old or older. Prior experience is not required, but volunteers should have a strong interest in Somerville history and be sociable.
If you are interested, please submit your contact information to admin@historicsomerville.org along with a brief statement of why you would like to become a docent and any background experience you have in this area. Please include your dates of availability for Sunday afternoons or a weekday eve. from August through November to the best of your knowledge. Thank you!
