PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION - June 8 - July 27, 2007

Photographer Knox Gardner Presents
"Whichever Stone You Lift "at the Brookline Arts Center

(Brookline, MA – May 21, 2007) The Brookline Arts Center is pleased to exhibit Knox Gardner’s photography show, "Whichever Stone You Lift: Memorials from Grove Street's Jewish Cemetery" from June 8 to July 27, 2007. Meet the photographer at the exhibit’s opening reception, on Friday, June 8, from 6 to 8 pm.

“Whichever Stone You Lift” features photographs of grave markers found in the Jewish cemeteries on Grove Street in West Roxbury, Massachusetts. What caught Gardner’s eye about these gravestones was that they feature ceramic photographs of the deceased. Gardner found that this style of memorial was most prevalent on grave markers dated from 1915 to 1935, and that only certain Jewish congregations in the large cemetery complex seemed to adopt it.

“I found them mysterious with their directness and the wakefulness of the dead,” said Gardner, of the impact these gravestones had on him.

“Whichever Stone You Lift” is Gardner’s first photography show. The genesis of this exhibition may be found on his web site http://www.moderncrisis.com. Gardner previously lived in Brookline, but recently relocated to Seattle, Washington. He is also a writer, and his poems have appeared in the James White Review.

Volunteers Needed at Brookline Arts Center

The Brookline Arts Center is a community-based organization and our corps of enthusiastic volunteers are probably the most important support for our many exciting art education programs.

http://www.brooklineartscenter.com

Every day, volunteers come to the arts center to greet visitors in the gallery, to assist the staff in the office, to assist teachers in classes, to help prepare the center for an Opening Reception in the gallery, to work on Crafts Showcase or to help plan a special fundraising event. It’s a great way to meet your neighbors, to give back to the community, to develop your job skills, to meet your fellow artists, and to learn more about galleries and contemporary art.

Some long-term volunteers have filmed documentaries with Arts Center artists, photographed arts center programs and special events, organized artist gallery talks at the BAC, led gallery programs, assisted in drop-in art projects, and lots more. If you have a few hours to share with us, we would love to welcome you into the Arts Center community of artists.

Please see the volunteer information below. Contact the BAC office if you prefer to have an information packet mailed to you, or to find out about current opportunities.

Jimmy Tingle's OFF BROADWAY Theater - May 20 - June 10, 2007

Bellylaughs, Blessings, Blarney and Bingo!

“MISGIVINGS”

Father Patrick Aloysius Misgivings offers a “divine” afternoon of stories and one-liners about growing up Catholic. From miracles and marriage counseling to bazaars and birth control, nothing escapes the good father’s razor sharp wit. This interactive comedy features a collection, a raffle, and an actual game of bingo!

Fr. Misgivings is the stage persona of Dave Kane, who comments, “Fr. Misgivings is the kind of priest you grew up with. A good and decent man dedicated to his collar, his religion and doing the right thing for all his parishioners, young and old. He’s the kind of priest who has Bingo but he calls out the numbers in Latin so the Protestants can’t win”.

Dave Kane’s character of Fr. Misgivings started on the radio as an ad-lib. Now some 30 years later, it is a one-man show that has them laughing in the aisles, and is the only show of its kind that features a priest as the main character. Dave Kane has performed this lively show starring Father Patrick Aloysius Misgivings with his Irish brogue and quick wit for many years at numerous venues, including opening with the character for Art Garfunkel and Jerry Vale. Kane is a talk show host on WNRI in Rhode Island with a strong following for his comedy throughout the state. He is also the author of “41 Signs of Hope” a book devoted to his son Nicky who died in the Station nightclub fire. The book is described as “A father’s grief in the wake of one of America’s worst disasters becomes a certainty that life and love continue forever”.

Fr. Misgivings Preaches the Virtue of Laughter: Kane comments about “Misgivings” that he likes to see people “feeling good about being Catholic”. “Laughter is God’s anesthetic”. “Laughter is a gift from God. When you are laughing you can’t do anything else.”

Health Care Reform Law - May 16-29, 2007

Dear Massachusetts Artists working in all disciplines and supporters of artists,

Presently, the Connector Authority, the state agency charged with implementing the Health Care Reform Law, has issued DRAFT regulations on how the Department of Revenue is to assess if someone is exempt from the individual mandate - the mandate that requires people to have health insurance.

The only measure they are planning to use to assess someone's income level is GROSS income only. This is highly problematic for artists, the self-employed, and small business owners and is clearly going to negatively impact the artist community, the self employed, and small business owners. It is our adjusted gross income that should be the measure (after business exemptions line 22 on the Federal Income tax form).

There is going to be a series of public hearings for the Connector to hear and collect testimony from the public on this important issue and others concerning the Health Care Reform Law.

The Artists Foundation is organizing panels of artists to testify and is also collecting written testimony from artists to submitt at the hearings. If you can attend this hearing and/or give written testimony (can be an email) as to why Gross income is not a fair way to assess income, please email me. Also even if you don't want to speak at this hearing- we are looking for people to attend and fill the house as they say.

The Dates and locations are:

May 16th 10am North Dartmouth (UMass Dartmouth)
May 23rd 10am Springfield (AIC College)
May 29th 10am Boston (State House, Gardner Auditorium)

We need artists to show up at these hearings!!!

------------------------------------------

They have published the following information:

Any individual with an annual GROSS income of $50,001 or more will be deemed to be able to afford health insurance.

Any couple with an annual GROSS income of $80,001 or more will be deemed to be able to afford health insurance.

Any family with an annual GROSS income of $110,001 or more will be deemed to be able to afford health insurance.

ADULT ART CLASSES - August 17, 2007

Faculty Brings Exciting Adult Classes to the Brookline Arts Center

(Brookline, MA – May 9, 2007) This summer at the Brookline Arts Center, both new and returning Brookline Arts Center instructors are bringing fun classes for adults. The summer semester at the Arts Center begins in July.

New faculty member Yaron Dotan leads Drawing: From Simple Surfaces to Hyperrealism. In this class, students will learn how to depict surfaces such as wood, soil, hair, skin and metal with graphite pencils. The end result will be drawings that visually capture how these objects feel. Dotan also teaches a Drawing in Ink class for children ages 9 and up.

Bob Collins, a familiar face among the BAC faculty, brings New Views: Workshop in Drawing and Painting, to the Arts Center. New Views combines Collins’ two most popular classes into one special summer workshop. Students of all experience levels are welcome to take this workshop to study the human figure and the qualities of abstract painting.

Comics for Adults is another new class taught by a returning teacher. Comics for Adults instructor Raul Gonzalez is the illustrator for the comic book series Attorney Man, which has caught the attention of The Boston Globe and The Wall Street Journal’s law blog. He has previously taught drawing to both adults and children at the BAC, and is also teaching How to Draw Manga Comics to older children and teens this summer.

Students interested in sculpture can choose from Sculpting with Paper, or one of the three portrait and figure sculpture classes. For adults interested in working with fiber, there’s nuno felting, the process of adhering the finest merino fibers to silk gauze to make beautifully layered fabrics, or batik. In both the nuno felting and batik classes, students can make scarves, bags, clothing or artistic wall hangings.

Other classes from past semesters are also running, including pottery, metalsmithing, and enameling. The Arts Center is also sponsoring a field trip to the Potters Studio, for ceramics students who wish to learn about raku firing, a Japanese method of glazing. This one-day workshop will take place on Friday, August 17.

The Brookline Arts Center is located at 86 Monmouth Street and is convenient to public transportation. For more information or for a complete list of summer classes for both children and adults, visit the Brookline Arts Center’s website at www.brooklineartscenter.com . You can contact the Brookline Arts Center directly at 617-566-5715, or at bac@brooklineartscenter.com.
