PRISON PUPS Film Screening - March 8, 2007
In the loneliness of incarceration, four inmates raise and train puppies for the handicapped and hearing impaired. PRISON PUPS, a 58 minute video documentary, follows Billy, Chris, Terrell and Paul, as it explores the impact of a dog training program in a prison environment. Through the stories of these men, we understand the importance of the human-canine bond in this unique and isolated environment of confined men. The inmates gain self-knowledge, confidence, and the lessons of unconditional love.
Lesley University, Thursday March 8,2007, 7:30pm at Marran Theater, Main Campus, 29 Everett St & Oxford, Cambridge. Admission free.

More details on the workshop and the class below. For more info, or to register for either, please contact: Mark H. Rooney at mhrooney@onetaiko.org or 781-721-0521

2) Next multiple week Taiko class session begins
on Sunday afternoon February 25!
4:15-6pm (no class on Easter Sunday, 4/8)
Space is limited--preregistration is necessary;
No experience necessary; drums provided!

FLUTE CONCERT SEEKS PLAYERS - March 17, 2007
The Willow Flute Ensemble, which proudly features three Somerville residents, is organizing its second annual Mega Flute concert! Last year we were a group of 46 flutists, performing pieces by Xenakis, Tallis, and Boston-based composer John Heiss. The concert was profiled in the _Arlington Advocate_, and featured more than 15 alto flutes, bass flutes, and a rare contrabass flute! For this year's concert, we'll be performing some amazing works by Ockeghem, Vaughan Williams, and more.
The concert will be March 17th, 7:30 p.m, at Newton City Hall. There will be two rehearsals that week (time TBA).
If you live in the vicinity of the Boston area and would be interested in playing, or know of someone who would be interested, please go to

Call for Works In all Media - February 1, 2007
Language, Place, and Object: A Juried Exhibition
April 2007
The interplay of image and language has long been considered the most
complete form of communication. As Simon Morley puts it in Writing on
the Wall, " The former mode allows openness of interpretation and
freedom of mental and sensual movement, while the latter confines the
reader to a predetermined route..." The goal of this exhibition is
to find works that can communicate one of the basic ideas of being,
place, through a unique interplay of image/object and language.
Venue:
Washington Street Art Center
321 Washington Street
Somerville, MA 02143
Juror:
Jennifer Schmidt, Professor of Printmedia, School of the Museum of
Fine Arts Boston.
Specifications:
Open to all media. Due to space and time constraints, performance can
only be considered as previously documented work. Preference will be
given to work that conceptually relates to the proposed theme of the
exhibition, with a sensitivity towards the form, material, and manner
in which the idea is related to the theme.
Images submitted for consideration should be on open formatted cd
(preferred method, 300 dpi jpg or tiff) or 35 mm slides (no glass
slides). All images should be labeled in accordance to CAA
specifications for easy identification, and should correspond to the
information provided on the entry form. All DVD entries must be under
3 minutes due to time constraints. If accepted into the exhibition, a
longer version may be shown.
All submission packets should contain no more than 3 entries, a CV,
artist statement, a check for the entrance fee of $25 made out to the
Washington Street Art Center, and a self addressed stamped envelope
for return of materials.
Deadline:
All materials must be received by February 1, 2007.
Notification:
Notification of accepted entries will be made by no later than March 1, 2007.

FIRST FRIDAY OPEN STUDIOS - January 5, 2007
I would like to invite you to First Friday Open Studios this Friday, Jan. 5th, from 6-9 pm., at 450 Harrison Ave., Studio 227, Boston, MA.
To all of you who stopped by during December's open studios, many thanks; I really enjoyed visiting with you!
This month, in addition to new prints from my personal collection, I will continue to feature newly restored photographs of early 20th century China from the archive of my Grandfather, William Leete. Finally, I will have new examples of client work, both photography and Fine-Art reproductions.
As always on First Fridays, the building's 15 galleries and more than 50 artists' studios are open! This Friday, if you want to avoid the early evening crush in the galleries, come upstairs to the studios first, and visit the galleries on your way out!
There is off street parking at 500 Harrison Avenue as well as on street parking. The MBTA Silver Line stop is East Berkeley, just one block away.
See you this Friday!
