Material Lamentations closes; 2019 Members Prize Show and 'This is how it starts' Open February 2019 at CAA Building a vibrant community through visual art, since 1944 Greetings! "We humans tend to set ourselves apart from the natural world, rather than see ourselves as intrinsic to it.   Mandorla Music presents Charlie Kohlhase's Explorers Club, 8pm Fri 2/1 at Third Life Studio, 33 Union Square.  $15 cover in advance here or at the door. Charlie Kohlhase has been a mainstay voice in creative music in Boston for decades. I'm thrilled to present the octet version of his Explorers Club, a band made up of many of Boston's best players.  The band for the evening will include Charlie on alto & baritone saxophone, Seth Meicht on tenor saxophone, Daniel Rosenthal on trumpet & flugelhorn, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Josiah Reibstein on tuba, Eric Hofbauer on guitar, Aaron Darrell on bass and Curt Newton on drums.  You can expect to hear music by Charlie Kohlhase, Aaron Darrell, Duke Ellington, Eric Hofbauer, Elmo Hope, Makanda Ken McIntyre, Roswell Rudd and John Tchicai. MEET OUR 2019 JURORS Camilo Alvarez About Camilo Alvarez | Camilo Alvarez is the owner (and director, curator and preparator) at Samsøn (founded as Samson Projects in 2004) in Boston, Massachusetts. Camilo was born in 1976 in New York City to Dominican parents and lived in Santo Domingo for 7 years. He received a BA from Skidmore College and is currently studying to receive a Masters in Museum Studies from Harvard University. He has worked at, among other places, Exit Art, Socrates Sculpture Park, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, MIT’s List Visual Art Center and the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture. Samsøn’s programs and exhibitions have been reviewed by, among others, ArtForum, the Boston Globe and Flash Art. www.samsonprojects.com Steve Locke About Steve Locke | Steve Locke is a Boston-based artist, raised in Detroit, Michigan. He received an M.F.A. in 2001 from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and holds Bachelors Degrees from Boston University and MassArt. He attended the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in 2002. He has been artist-in-residence at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston (2016) and for the City of Boston (2018). He has received grants from The Pollock-Krasner Foundation, The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, and The Art Matters Foundation. Solo exhibitions include, there is no one left to blame, curated by Helen Molesworth for the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, The School of Love with Samsøñ (Boston, MA),  Family Pictures with Gallery Kayafas (Boston, MA and most recently #Killers at YOURS MINE & OURS in New York. He has had solo projects with the Boston Public Library, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Mendes Wood in Sao Paulo, Brazil, at VOLTA 5 in Basel, Switzerland and P.S.   OUR STORIES, OUR STUFF, OUR SOMERVILLE A Community-Sourced Exhibition at the Somerville Museum Curated by Bess Paupeck    This exhibition will be a celebration of the people of Somerville and their life experiences as expressed through their prized possessions and personal stories.  The exhibit will bring people together by bringing their things together at the Somerville Museum - and the convergence of these things, and the stories that go with them, will offer a renewed sense of community at a time of rapid change for Somerville.   This Somerville Museum Community Curator Grant exhibit will open with public reception on February 14, 2019, 6-8pm.  All are welcome!     BUT FIRST, LEND US YOUR STUFF!   We are seeking individuals, families and organizations to lend an everyday object to this exhibition.  The Museum will be open on Saturday, January 19, 2019 - from 10am-4pm for people to drop off the items they are lending for the show.   We are looking for stuff like: photos and ephemera ...wedding keepsakes, family objects ...souvenirs: sports, military, school, travel ...clothing, uniforms, costumes ...music, movies, books ...hobbies: automotive, games, carpentry, sewing, etc ...things you collect ...anything else that tells a story you want to share!   If you have something you'd like to lend to this exhibition or if you'd like to be involved as a volunteer, please email Bess Paupeck: ourstuffsomerville@gmail.com.   About the Curator:  Bess Paupeck has happily lived in Somerville since February 2002. From deep within this changing city and the lived experience of evolving notions around home and place, Bess draws inspiration for her work, which focuses on creating and producing experiences that support dialogue, exploration and growth for individuals and communities.   An arts producer, curator and collaborator, Bess has worked at a few of the many cultural and academic institutions in and around Boston such as the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis, Harvard University, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Science and the Somerville Arts Council.

Each year, January brings a clean slate, a chance for renewal and reinvention. 2019 at the Cambridge Art Association begins with a pair of exhibits that represent a new chapter for our 74-year old organization. In the galleries this month, we feature our new curatorial series exhibit, Material Lamentations: Art, Grief, and the Land, and it's companion, members' juried exhibit, Art, Grief, and the Land. Both exhibits are the vision of Patrica Miranda, and both engage the viewer in contemplating humanity's impact on our environment. And, in our satellite spaces - new art comes to Coldwell Banker mid-month, and we'll host an opening celebration on January 30th, from 5:30-7:30pm. We also add a new satellite space to our line-up - the original Darwin's location on Mount Auburn Street!   CALLING ALL SOMERVILLE RESIDENTS!  The Somerville Museum presents: Our Stories, Our Stuff, Our Somerville – and we want YOUR stuff! Lend us something - drop your stuff off at the museum on Saturday, January 19, 10am-4pm. The exhibition Our Stories, Our Stuff, Our Somerville will be a celebration of the people of Somerville and their life experiences as expressed through their stuff!  The exhibit will bring people together by bringing their things together at the Somerville Museum - and the convergence of these things, and the stories that go with them, will offer a renewed sense of community at a time of rapid change for Somerville.  The museum is calling all individuals, families and organizations of Somerville to lend a meaningful, everyday object to this exhibition.  We are looking for things like: photos and ephemera ...wedding keepsakes, family objects ...souvenirs: sports, military, school, travel ...clothing, uniforms, costumes ...music, movies, books ...hobbies: automotive, games, carpentry, sewing, etc ...things you collect ...anything else that tells a story you want to share!  Does not need to be Somerville related or a collection – it’s really anything you would like to lend!   LEND US YOUR STUFF: drop things off at the Somerville museum on Saturday, January 19, between 10am-4pm.  The museum is located 1 Westwood Road, Somerville, at the corner of Central Street and Westwood Road.    Our Stories, Our Stuff, Our Somerville will open with a public reception on February 14, 2019, 6-8pm.  All are welcome!
