February Exhibits at the Cambridge Art Association! - [somartscouncil]

Material Lamentations closes; 2019 Members Prize Show and 'This is how it starts' Open February 2019 at CAA Building a vibrant community through visual art, since 1944 Greetings! "We humans tend to set ourselves apart from the natural world, rather than see ourselves as intrinsic to it. Here, nine artists, including Michelle Lougee and Julie Poitras Santos, mourn the consequences of that estrangement, and find hope." ~ Cate McQuaid, Boston Globe I hope you had a chance to stop by the galleries in January to see our companion exhibits, Material Lamentations at our Kathryn Schultz Gallery, and Art, Grief, and the Land at University Place. Both exhibits explore the idea of solastalgia - 'the pain experienced when there is recognition that the place where one resides and that one loves is under immediate assault . . . a form of homesickness one gets when one is still at ‘home.’' This Saturday, we host a closing reception and talk with curator Patricia Miranda - Saturday, 2/2, noon-2pm, at our Kathryn Schultz Gallery. Scroll down for our February exhibits. [somartscouncil] Charlie Kohlhase's Explorers Club this Friday at Third Life Studio - [somartscouncil]

Mandorla Music presents Charlie Kohlhase's Explorers Club, 8pm Fri 2/1 at Third Life Studio, 33 Union Square.  $15 cover in advance here or at the door. Charlie Kohlhase has been a mainstay voice in creative music in Boston for decades. I'm thrilled to present the octet version of his Explorers Club, a band made up of many of Boston's best players.  The band for the evening will include Charlie on alto & baritone saxophone, Seth Meicht on tenor saxophone, Daniel Rosenthal on trumpet & flugelhorn, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Josiah Reibstein on tuba, Eric Hofbauer on guitar, Aaron Darrell on bass and Curt Newton on drums.  You can expect to hear music by Charlie Kohlhase, Aaron Darrell, Duke Ellington, Eric Hofbauer, Elmo Hope, Makanda Ken McIntyre, Roswell Rudd and John Tchicai. Watch & listen: CKEC plays the Kohlhase composition 'Doom is Mine' Critics at the Globe and the Arts Fuse have included this in their weekly jazz picks, and Charlie & co are using this date to do some live recording so you should hear a great band at the top of their game.   Come on out!  “…wild goulash of Free Jazz bluster, neo-Bebop discipline, and a nutty irreverence…”  - Stuart Kremsky, Cadence Magazine "Is there anything Charlie Kohlhase can't do?  He plays straightahead jazz with more depth and fervor than many a young lion.  He plays 'outside' - often on those same straightahead pieces - with coherence, wit, and a firm sense of musical architecture.  He composes imaginatively and prolifically.  He leads a group of enormously talented and capable musicians with his own combustible saxophone playing." - Robert Spencer, All About Jazz
