Macuco Quintet
Friday June 23, 7:30 pm (one set)
Admission: $10 at door (cash only)
Rick Stone – alto sax, clarinet
Joel Springer – tenor & sopranino saxes, melodica
Allan Chase – baritone, alto, & soprano saxes
Fernando Huergo – electric bass
Austin McMahon – drums, melodica
With a fresh take on Brazilian-Latin jazz, Macuco Quintet plays original pieces (and some by Brazilian genius Hermeto Pascoal) that mix hip-shaking grooves, unexpected harmonies, playful melodies, and expressive improvisations. Influenced by jazz composers Julius Hemphill, Carla Bley, Hermeto Pascoal, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Sun Ra and others, and inspired by the nature, people & music of Brazil. Add a dash of nostalgia for 1970s jazz, then pour in some serious fun and a belief in the soul-nourishing power of music, and the Macuco Quintet stew is ready to serve!
Macuco Quintet was formed in Boston in 2014 by Joel Springer, a long-time member of Boston’s Your Neighborhood Saxophone Quartet. The group has a somewhat unusual instrumentation: three saxophonists (playing five different types of saxophone, plus clarinet), an electric bassist, and a drummer who sometimes plays melodica.
“Love the front line in this band: saxophonists Allan Chase, Joel Springer, and Rick Stone. And they’ll all be doubling, so expect provocative voicings and yummy sonorities. And, oh yeah, the rhythm team is also tops: bassist Fernando Huergo and drummer Austin McMahon" -Jon Garelick, The Arts Fuse, 9/27/15

Mandorla Music Series continues with
Daniel Carter/Jeff Platz Quartet
Saturday June 24, 8pm
Tickets: $15, advance tickets here
Mandorla Music is thrilled to have NYC free jazz legend Daniel Carter (and his armload of instruments) and frequent collaborator guitarist Jeff Platz back. This time around they'll be joined by bassist Damon Smith and drummer Matt Crane.
Active since the early 1970s, reeds, flute & trumpet player Daniel Carter has played not just with such seminal contemporary free jazz figures as William Parker, Hamid Drake and Matthew Shipp but also with such diverse performers as Yo La Tengo, Thurston Moore, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Vernon Reid and DJ Logic, among many others.
Guitarist Jeff Platz is well known to audiences in Boston, New York and Europe for what one reviewer recently called his "classic jazz guitar tone and an expansive palette of sounds and colors."
Carter and Platz have worked together extensively, including on the 2013 release 'Past and Present Futures.'
