With a fresh take on Brazilian-Latin jazz, Macuco Quintet plays original pieces (and some by Brazilian genius Hermeto Pascoal) that mix hip-shaking grooves, unexpected harmonies, playful melodies, and expressive improvisations. Formed in 2014 by Joel Springer, a long-time member of Boston’s Your Neighborhood Saxophone Quartet, their music has been influenced by jazz composers Julius Hemphill, Carla Bley, Hermeto Pascoal, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Sun Ra, and the people, music, and nature of Brazil.
Macuco Quintet will share the evening with a special group: comprised of four musicians from different parts of Brazil and one from Russia, bringing different musical experiences and backgrounds, this group was put together in Boston with the idea of playing the music of great Brazilian composers such as Tom Jobim, Hermeto Pascoal, Egberto Gismonti and Moacir Santos. Samba, choro, baião and other Brazilian rhythms are incorporated in a diverse panorama of Brazilian music and culture.
Yulia Musayelyan – flute
Gaia Wilmer – saxophone
Caio Afiune – guitar
Mayo Pamplona – bass
Raphael Lehnen – drums
