Call for Submissions for “The Friend Smithsonian Museum”
About the Gallery
The Friend Smithsonian Museum is a tiny museum located at 135 Highland Ave. in Somerville. Even though this unique space may be modest in stature, it welcomes big ideas, offering an artist the opportunity to explore a more intimate setting for smaller works. Since the museum is on a very busy pedestrian street, it can be viewed from the sidewalk 24 hours a day and is continuously lit. The exhibits are viewed at “kid level” and dozens of small children as well as perhaps 100 adults pass by each day to peer inside.
How to apply
We invite local artists to submit their idea for the coming year. Three-dimensional installations work best in the space. If you are a 2-D artist, you are encouraged to explore making your work 3-D for this space! Please keep in mind that because of the size restrictions we are only able to exhibit one artist at a time. A model of the interior space exists for purposes of planning.
- Please submit a succinct one-paragraph description of your work or idea and 3 jpegs of your available work you wish to exhibit or provide a link to your website. For installations, please provide a detailed proposal of what you intend to do and sketches, if applicable.
- Within the email provide all pertinent contact information
- State desired month you wish to exhibit
- If selected, you will be required to sign an agreement releasing any liability from the building owner.
For completed works, please note: the following information should accompany each image:
- Artist name & Contact Info (phone & e-mail)
- Title of the piece
- Description of Medium
- Complete accurate dimensions (length, width, depth, & approximate weight)
When choosing work to submit please keep in mind that each panel of the display space has the following dimensions:
Depth – 30”
Width – 38”
This call will continue on a rolling basis. Submission to this call does not guarantee placement in the window.
