Cityspaces is a showcase of recent and past artwork by Somerville artist Emily Garfield, who works with maplike imagery to create drawings that evoke aerial views of imagined places. Works in the show are drawn from the predominant Cityspace series, spanning the last five years of the artist's work. More recent work has brought her maplike markmaking into more abstract paintings and drawings that reference both maps and also other natural and human patterns like cells and networks.
Emily Garfield is originally from New York City and has resided in Somerville since 2009. She has a BA in Visual Art from Brown University, where she also studied visual perception, aesthetics and Japanese studies, including a semester learning traditional Japanese arts in Nagoya. She has exhibited extensively in the Boston area, including City Hall, and her last solo exhibition was a large overview exhibition at Bloc 11 in Somerville. Emily was the coordinator for Somerville Open Studios 2014. She draws at Artisan’s Asylum in Somerville, where she is also a board member.
