Lush sonorities and a saxophonic blend worthy of Ellington’s finest reed sections. JazzTimes
A signature event in the Boston holiday season for more than 40 years, Aardvark’s Christmas Concert December 20 will feature selections from the magnificent Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s beloved Nutcracker Suite – an exuberant big band take on the perennial classic. The band will also perform William Billings' Shepherd's Carol, American carols and spirituals, and selections from Mark Harvey’s Bethlehem Counterpoint, including The Prophet, inspired by legendary social activist Kip Tiernan (1926-2011). Proceeds will benefit Poor People’s United Fund, an organization that Tiernan co-founded, which fights poverty and homelessness through education, advocacy, support to grassroots service organizations, and emergency assistance to families and individuals.
One of the longest running large jazz ensembles in the world, Aardvark performs widely, has premiered more than 150 works, and has released 12 CDs to worldwide acclaim, including 7 discs on the prestigious Leo Records label. Aardvark is: Arni Cheatham, Peter Bloom, Phil Scarff, Chris Rakowski, Dan Zupan/saxes and woodwinds; K.C.
