We’ll take apart and examine scrap electronics, learn how to solder, build motors, play sounds, make things blink and spin, and build connections. Sample projects might include: Motor cars, drawdios, DIY motors, lightsabers,, solar-triggered bristlebots, and more!

Tuesday: Computer Club. A weekly meet-up for kids who like to code. We use Scratch for kids just starting out, then switch over to Java and Python for advanced projects. Learn the basic concepts of writing software and computation — variables, logical control structures (loops, conditionals), functions, and objects — by designing your on games and animations.

Wednesday: Open shop at Parts and Crafts! Learn how to make simple projects out of wood and foam: dynamos, boxes, small carts, ornithopters, jigsaw puzzles, mini catapults, and more! No experience necessary, all are welcome, come by and make something!

Friday: Game Day. Risk, Hey that My Fish, Pandemic, and a whole lot of Magic: the Gathering — all the games you could ever want to play! This is less a class and more an open meet-up for kids who want to hang out, meet new people, and play strategy games.

How it works:

Afterschool begins on Monday September 9. Our last day for fall semester is Friday, December 19. Programs are tailored for kids ages 7-13 but all are welcome. Kids younger than 7 must be accompanied by a grown-up at all times.

Rolling enrollment: Workshops run for four sessions and repeat monthly — if you want to come check out the space, they’re a great way to get your feet wet and try it out! Kids are welcome to sign up by week, by month, or by semester, or just drop in to check out a particular class.

Voluntary membership. If you like what we do and want to support it financially, please consider buying a membership to our space! Membership is not required for participation but it's a great way for people who are using our programs in an ongoing way to help keep the lights on and programs running.

How to register: Kids who are being dropped off independently must have a full registration packet on file filled out in person at the time of drop-off. To reserve a space ahead of time, sign up here! There is no cost to register, and all are welcome regardless of membership status.

Transportation: We are looking for parents who want to help bottom-line carpooling arrangements from Somerville, Cambridge, and Medford. If you have space and a willingness to organize in exchange for free membership, please email us at contact@partsandcrafts.org.

CSCL is enrolling for fall semester!

Are you currently homeschooling? Interested in homeschooling? Looking for alternatives to school? If so, we'd love to talk to you! CSCL is a year-round program for kids who want to make, build, play, and explore at their own pace and on their own terms. We run a community space with lots of tools, resources and projects, designed to meet a range of homeschooling needs.

INFORMATION HERE

How it works. CSCL is a member-based program, and kids are welcome to sign up anywhere from one to five days a week. Our schedule is built in an ongoing way, with classes based on what kids ask for and are excited about learning, with one-on-one tutorials tailored to meet the needs of individual families. Fridays are reserved for off-site field trips.

Dates and costs: CSCL starts Monday September 9 and runs through Friday May 29. Yearly enrollment for five days a week is $9250 with tiered day rates going down to $1900/year. We offer sliding scale options for all of our day rates and are committed to making space for anyone who wants to join regardless of ability to pay. Membership may be paid monthly or by semester and may be renewed mid-year.

How to register: Want to find out more? Come by for a visit! Kids are welcome to come by to see how the space works and see if it's a good fit. We are also available most days between 3 and 5:30 to meet with parents. In-person meetings are the best way to get a sense of the space, and highly recommended for families who are interested in enrolling their kids.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are planning to enroll your child and haven't confirmed with us for Fall 2014, please email us to confirm your spot!

We've had a lot of conversations with interested people over the last few weeks --- if you are planning to join us, please email contact@partsandcrafts.org so we know to expect you on Monday September 9!
