UNION SQUARE MAIN STREETS
Position Title: Special Events Coordinator
The Special Events Coordinator fosters community involvement, assists in promotional and fundraising efforts, and recruits and coordinates vendors and performers. The Special Events Coordinator is a key team member in two key events happening in Union Square in Somerville:: Better Block Somerville on May 31 and the Fluff Festival and Fluffernutter Fun Run on September 26 & 27.
Requirements: Must display personal confidence and the ability to effectively communicate with a variety of people. Should be friendly, self-motivated, energetic, and community-focused. Desired background includes project management, customer service, education, outreach and grassroots marketing. Must be willing and able to work outdoors, and to safely lift and carry 50 pounds. The position requires the ability to work independently as well as interdependently in a team of staff and volunteers.
Specifics: 10 to 20 hours a week through September 30. Flexible schedule weekdays 10 am to 6 pm and be available all day on the following dates: Friday, May 30; Saturday, May 31; Thursday through Sunday, September 25-28. This is a contract position.

Better Block Event
Presented in partnership with Team Better Block and the City of Somerville, this project’s temporary installations and programming demonstrate ways we might create a safer and more inviting environment in the public spaces of Union Square.
Community Coordination: Outreach to various community organizations and individuals to garner support for the project, including coordination of donated materials and volunteers.Distribute printed and electronic materials.
Private Sector Coordination: Outreach to neighborhood businesses and property owners, and engagement of this group as active participants.
Vendor Programming: Recruit and coordinate vendors
Entertainment Programming: Book at least two performances. Create staging plan.
Fluff Festival and Fluffernutter Fun Run
Part of the Somerville Arts Council’s ArtsUnion series, the What the Fluff Festival attracts more than 10,000 visitors to Union Square. This community-focused event brings together local artists, musicians, theatrical performers, inventors, and humorists to pay madcap tribute to the creation of this great American foodstuff. This year, we’ve added a Fun Run on the Friday evening before the festival.
Neighborhood Coordination: Outreach to neighborhood businesses and property owners, and engagement of this group as active participants.
Vendor Programming: Recruit and coordinate vendors.
Entertainment Programming: Book musical and theatrical performers.
Promotion: Distribute promotional materials.
