PARTS & CRAFTS UPCOMING WORKSHOPS - December 2013
Stained Glass Contraptions. Saturday December 7, 1-3 pm. A crash course in making beautiful objects with Terry Murray the Inventor Mentor! Learn to cut and solder stained glass to design and create your own artwork or decorations, or build solder-free mosaics. Just in time for the gift-giving season! $10-20, sliding scale, come early for open shop!
Open House: Center for Semiconducted Learning! Saturday December 13, 1-3 pm. Do you love learning but hate school? Looking to take a more self-directed route? If so, we want to talk to you! The Parts and Crafts Center for Semiconducted Learning is a year-round resource center offering classes, workshops, and self-directed learning opportunities for kids ages 7-13. We're open to homeschoolers, unschoolers, and everyone in between, and are currently enrolling for spring semester -- come to our open house on Saturday 12/13 to find out more about our program!
Saturday Open Shop. Saturdays in December, 12/7 and 12/13, 12-2 pm. Every Saturday we open up our shop, from 12:00 p.m. to 2 p.m. to families and other curious folks who want to come in, look around, and make something (or make something happen!) We’ll have a few projects around, and spend the afternoon building and hanging out together. Come by and make something! Free / by donation. NOTE: There is no open shop on Saturday 12/21 -- we'll resume after the holidays on 1/11.
Kids Street Band. Sundays in December, 12/8 and 12/14, 3-5 pm. Stomp your feet and make some noise! A Honk-style kids band that plays simple, danceable tunes; we learn by ear, and we learn together. Led by Dylan Foley, this band is open to anyone, no experience necessary. Bring an instrument if you have one. Free / by donation. NOTE: There is no kids band on Sunday 12/22 - we'll resume after the holidays on 1/12.
NEW! MINECRAFT MODDING CLASSES
You asked for them, so here they are! Three new minecraft modding classes, starting this week and running through the end of January. Minecraft modding has historically filled up quite quickly -- typically within 48 hours of announcing - so sign up early to reserve your spot!
December 2013 - Advanced class. Tuesday afternoons, 3:00pm to 5:00pm, 12/3, 12/10, 12/17. $75. A 3-session follow-up to any of our previous beginner Minecraft Modding classes. This class is specifically for people who have attended one of the beginner classes, as we will be starting the class with code that we wrote during these past sessions. 8 spots available.
January 2014 - Beginner class. Tuesday afternoons, 3:00pm to 5:00pm 1/7, 1/14, 1/21, 1/28. $100. A 4-session computer programming class based around creating mods for Minecraft. Making mods involves writing, or rewriting, Java source code, and is a fantastic way to learn about how large scale, structured software projects come to be. Participants in this class don't need to already know Java, but they should be familiar with programming and computation in some context (Scratch, for instance), and should be able to read and type. 8 spots available.
January 2014 - Advanced class. Saturdays mornings, 10:00 to 11:30, 1/4, 1/11, 1/18, 1/25.A 4-session follow-up to any of our previous beginner Minecraft Modding classes. This class is specifically for people who have attended one of the beginner classes, as we will be starting the class with code that we wrote during these past sessions. 8 spots available.
Please note: While we have a number of Parts and Crafts computers available, we encourage kids to bring laptops so they they can get them set up for doing more programming at home.

A whole week of invention and creation! We’ll have our electronics workbench, art table, a bunch of hand-tools, building supplies, scrap materials, air pumps, hot glue, duct tape, etc. Printers will be taken apart, bread will be baked, LEDs and motors will be glued to things, there may very well be giant cardboard sculptures. Who knows? February 17-21, 9-3 pm, $75-300, sliding scale (early and late care available, $25/50 for the week)
WINTER AFTERSCHOOL @ P&C (JAN - FEB)
Our next round of afterschool workshops is starting up this January --- we'll run a short session (6 weeks) leading up to February camp, and then another session between February and April vacation. Fall programs have been a blast so far, and we're excited to be offering another round following winter break. Details below! For questions, email contact@partsandcrafts.rog.
Monday: Open Shop. 6 sessions, January 6 – February 10, 3-5pm. We’ll have our electronics workbench and basic shop setup, plus hot glue guns, wood scraps, LEDs, motors, googly eyes, various other building materials, plus some projects to get you started. Sample projects might include: bristlebots, motorcars, boffer swords, marshmallow launchers, and various projects of your own devising. Cost: $60-120 sliding scale ($10-20/session drop-in rate)
Tuesday: Computer Club. 6 sessions, January 7 – February 11, 3-5pm. A weekly meet-up for kids who like to code. We use Scratch, a graphical based programming language that is easy to use, as an introduction to programming, then switch over to Python or Java for more advanced projects. We have some computers, but typically not nearly enough — so if kids have laptops, they should bring them! Cost: $60-120 sliding scale ($10-20/session drop-in rate)
Wednesday Circus + Art with Kieran and Kelly. 6 sessions, January 8-February 12. Want to learn to juggle? Make jewelry? Balance things on your nose? Decontextualize noun phrases? Then Wednesdays might be for you. An afterschool hangout for climbing trees, playing wacky word games, and going to the park to play deliberately. Cost: $60-120 sliding scale ($10-20/session drop-in rate)
Thursday: Functional DIY. 6 sessions, January 9 – February 13, 3-5pm. Books, shoes, bags, clothes, hats… If you’ve ever thought “Hey, that’s a cool thing! I want to make one of those!” then Tuesdays in January at Parts & Crafts are for you! We’ll be making artistically visually pleasing yet completely functional objects that you can really use! Cost: $60-120 sliding scale ($10-20/session drop-in rate)
Friday: Board Games! 6 sessions, January 10 – February 14, 3-5pm.Calling all gamers! It’s the end of the week, and time to kick back and play some serious strategy games. Risk, Axis and Allies, Hey that’s my Fish, and Magic: the Gathering, with lots of other games thrown into the mix. Cost: $60-120 sliding scale ($10-20/session drop-in rate)
