About Altar Making
Altars are made to honor the lives of those who have passed. These miniature creations of the joyful altars you seen made around Day of the Dead will be created using paper, glue, stamps, string, markers, and your imagination. Materials will be provided! but if you can bring a personal item, keepsake, or photo of the loved one it will make your altar even
We are running altar making workshops in order to display the work at the Cantina la Mexicana Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) Festival happening on November 2nd. If you create an altar I will ask if I can hold onto it to display it at the festival (but it is not required). Thanks!!
Please email megart04@gmail.com if you are interested in attending or have questions!
About Day of the Dead
Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends, family members, and ancestors. The celebration takes place on November 1 and 2, in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. To commemorate the life of loved ones, family members construct altars to pay tribute those who have passed on. In honor of this fine tradition, the Somerville Arts Council would like to invite folks to get creative and design their own version of a Day of the Dead altar.
