FRESH POND RESERVATION EVENTS - November 2013

These events are FREE and open to the public. Children are welcome in the company of an adult. Please register for each event that you plan to attend. You will receive directions and information on parking when you register. Unless otherwise directed, e-mail Elizabeth Wylde at friendsoffreshpond@yahoo.com or call 617-349-6489 and leave your name and phone number.

FRESH POND OWL WALK
Sunday, November 3, 4:15 to 6:15pm
Meeting location given upon registration
There are owls at Fresh Pond, although few of us ever see or hear them. We will have an opportunity during this evening walk with Bob Stymeist, statistician for the Brookline Bird Club and records compiler for Bird Observer magazine. We will cover Black’s Nook, parts of the golf course, and both the Butterfly and Lusitania meadows. Please bring a flashlight, wear shoes for walking on grass, and dress warmly. Limited to 15 people. Cancelled if rain is more than a mist.

A TOUR OF THE WATER PURIFICATION FACILITY
Monday, November 4, 6 to 7:30 pm
Water Purification Facility front door
250 Fresh Pond Parkway
Come learn where your tap water originates, how it is purified to make it safe and tasty for drinking and cooking, and the role Fresh Pond plays in the process. Members of the Cambridge Water Department staff will describe the process, answer your questions, and give a tour of the building. This is the final tour of 2013.

FASCINATING FUNGI OF FRESH POND
Saturday, November 9, 2 to 4:30 pm
Maynard Ecology Center, basement of Neville Place
650 Concord Avenue
Mycologist Lawrence Millman has identified 231 mushroom species at Fresh Pond Reservation. For the past nine years he has led similar Fresh Pond mushroom forays that give participants the chance to add to this list as well as learn more about the world of fungi. He'll also be selling (and signing!) copies of his beautiful book, Fascinating Fungi of New England, the first guidebook devoted exclusively to New England mushrooms.

DO THE DUCK WALK!
Saturday, November 16, 10 am to 12 noon
Meeting location given upon registration
Fresh Pond is an attractive resting place for a variety of migrating waterfowl – and a magnet for birders who flock to see them. We will use a telescope to get good looks at birds on the water, and binoculars to look at songbirds in the trees and meadows. We have binoculars to lend and will show you how to use them. Beginners are welcome!

A FRESH POND RESERVATION VIRTUAL WALKABOUT
Monday, November 18, 6 to 7:30 pm
Water Purification Facility front door
250 Fresh Pond Parkway
Join Chip Norton, Cambridge Watershed Manager, for a slide show featuring restoration work at Fresh Pond. Learn about the successes and challenges of the Master Plan implementation, see ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos of major projects, find out about present and upcoming projects, and have your questions answered. Please register: fpr@cambridgema.gov or 617-349-6489.
