SOMERVILLE FREE PUNJABI/SIKH CULTURE FESTIVAL - September 7, 2013
The Somerville Arts Council and the Gurdwara Sikh Sangat Society present an ArtsUnion event:
Utsav! A Festival of Punjabi and Sikh Culture
Saturday, September 7th, 4pm-8pm
Union Square, Somerville
Utsav, first held in 2010, drew hundreds of people into Union Square with free food by the local gurdwara, bhangra dancers, sword-swinging gatka marital artists, and more! It returns with just as many festivities and is an event recommended for the whole family.
The word utsav means "feast-day" and we promise free plates of food, cold sodas, and lots of entertainment to feast your eyes on. Dosa n'Curry will also be at the event early on selling it's delicious dosas (Indian crepes filled with potatoes and paneer), masala, and mango lassis.
There will be a religious ceremony complete with kirtan music to demonstrate the Sikh culture and encourage anyone who would like to join the gurdwara. Following the demonstration will be the brightly adorned bhangra team ‘Sadi Sheran Naal Yaari’ and a giddha team of traditional Punjabi dancers. Then prepared to be amazed by the gatka martial arts performance as they impressively swing swords and fight with sticks.
In addition to all the above fun there will be a Try-On-A-Turban or Sari booth, yoga demonstrations from the Millis Gurdwara, several vendors selling saris, and a woman doing mehndi hand painting. This is a cultural event not to be missed so we hope to see you there!
