SOMERVILLE NAVE GALLERY PHONE ART BOX PROJECT - May 1, 2013

The Phone Art Box

The Nave Gallery and Somerville Arts Council present a unique public art opportunity:

The Phone Art Box
A Somerville Public Art Project

http://navegallery.org/wp/phone-art-box-call/
The Nave Gallery and Somerville Arts Council seek proposals for art to transform abandoned phone boxes throughout the city. Art must be durable and able to withstand the weather conditions for this semi-permanent public art project. We will seal most boxes with a Plexiglass panel upon completion for protection with the exception of interactive sites. There is no theme specified for proposals but concepts to consider are: telecommunication, change, specific neighborhoods, nearby businesses or geography, 21st century, transformation. These should be considered a starting point and not a limit.

Artists are welcome to identify a specific phone box that they would like to use but their choice is not guaranteed.

EMAIL SUBMISSIONS and QUESTIONS TO:

somphonebox@gmail.com

APPLICATION MATERIALS NEEDED:
photo of proposed empty phone box and address (or one will be assigned)
proposed approximate date of the actual installation (ex mid-May)
one paragraph description of idea
sketch or photoshopped image of proposed installation
list of materials
indicate if box is meant to be interactive
indicate any other special needs
include any other material that helps to express your concept

ROLLING DEADLINE:
Beginning April 1, 2013. The project will continue to add new sites through the next 6 months or until our budget has been spent.

EXHIBITION DATES:
Beginning May 15, 2013. There is no identified removal date. Work may be removed pending condition over time.

STIPEND:
Accepted artists will receive a $100 for their time and materials. Artists are not responsible for cost and installation of plexi glass.

LOCATION:
Throughout the city of Somerville, MA.

Made possible with the funding and support by the Somerville Arts Council and the City of Somerville. Special thanks to Mayor Joseph Curtatone for suggesting this idea.
