SOMERVILLE ARMORY EVENTS - April 22-28, 2013

Here are this week's Armory events... featuring the rescheduled Combat Robots event (Wed); charity benefits for The Welcome Project (Thu), Somerville Homeless Coalition (Sat), and artists in Haiti (Sun); the wrap-up event for Somerville's Peace Month (Fri); and our first Somerville Open Studios event of the year (Kids' Show opening reception, Sat afternoon).

Not to mention Cafe events every day - it's a busy week!

Salsa Basics with Mambo Soul
Mon Apr 22, 7-8 pm, in the Cafe, $15
An evening of hot sassy salsa dance at the armory! No experience or
partner necessary. Every Monday in April and May. Monthly tuition rates
also available.

Hayley & Austin
Tue Apr 23, 8-9:30 pm, in the Cafe, FREE
Acoustic music in the Cafe! Two singer-songwriters perform a variety of
pieces together and individually.

SAC Salon Series: Intellexploitation
Wed Apr 24, 7:30-9 pm, in the Cafe, FREE
Three first-time feature filmmakers discuss the complexity of tackling
sociopolitical messages without regard for mainstream, film-industry
expectations in a post-exploitation world.

Combat Robots! With Artisan’s Asylum, Mathworks and the Cambridge
Science Festival
Wed Apr 24, 6-10 pm, in the Hall, Free!
Rescheduled from April 21st!! Artisan’s Asylum and MathWorks are
hosting a week-long combat robots design challenge as part of the
Cambridge Science Festival - and the grand finale is at the Armory!
Watch the robots compete for glory and bragging rights. Peek in on the
pit area to watch the repairs in between rounds.

YUM: A Taste of Immigrant City
Thu Apr 25, 7-10:30 pm, in the Hall, $35/$40
Sample the delicious fare of participating immigrant-run Somerville
restaurants at YUM: A Taste of Immigrant City. Enjoy tastes from
Ethiopia, Mexico, the Mediterranean, Turkey, Brazil, Italy, Nepal,
Portugal and more. A benefit for The Welcome Project.

Classical Café: the Libella Quartet
Thu Apr 25, 7:30-9:30 pm, in the Cafe, $10/$20
Boston’s only professional vocal quartet will present the winners of
the second Libella Composition Competition. The program will feature all
contemporary compositions by East Coast composers James Dargan, Karl
Henning, Lisa Lynch, Matthew McConnell, Jason Sabol, Charles Turner and
Kazumi Umeda. Works range from microtonal to extended technique and the
concert promises to be one-of-a-kind. The composers will be present to
introduce and discuss their works. More info at

Villens’ All-Out Bash
Fri Apr 26, 5-10 pm, in the Performance Hall, $2/$3
This Friday, the Armory proudly presents Villens’ All-Out Bash, the
wrap-up of Somerville's Peace Month. In cooperation with Teen
Empowerment, Groundwork Somerville, and a host of other sponsors.

Voci Angelica Trio
Fri Apr 26, 7-10 pm, in the Cafe, Donations
Voci Angelica will perform evocative and emotionally resonant folk music
from Asian, Latin American, African and European traditions. These
traditional songs are transformed into engaging original arrangements
for two sopranos, cello, percussion, and piano.

SOS Kids’ Art Show: Opening Reception
Sat Apr 27, 12-2 pm, in the Cafe, FREE
The first of several Somerville Open Studios events to be held at the
Armory... Check out what our community’s younger artists (14 and
under) have been creating! The exhibit will be on display in the Cafe
from April 27 to May 10, but the mini-cupcakes will only be served at
the opening reception.

Under the Roof: A Benefit for the Somerville Homeless Coalition
Sat Apr 27, 6-10 pm, in the Hall
Join the Somerville Homeless Coalition for their annual gala... this
year honoring Redbones and its owners Robert Gregory and Caryn Whitney
for their community leadership and long-standing support of the
Somerville Homeless Coalition. Enjoy Redbones BBQ, dancing to live
music by the Loomers, and a Silent Auction!

Cafe Raqs
Sun Apr 28, 7-9 pm, in the Café, Donations
Café Raqs is New England’s exciting monthly dance revue celebrating
the beauty and diversity of the Boston bellydance and Tribal dance
community. This community-based, multi-styled show will showcase some
of New England’s most well-known and favorite dancers as well as
up-and-comers looking to make their mark on the scene.

Strings of Hope: A Haitian musical feast!
Sun Apr 28, 7-10 pm, in the Performance Hall, $20
Strings of Hope is a benefit for artists in Haiti, presented by the
Haitian Artists Assembly of Massachusetts. The event will feature
Gifrants, Charlot Lucien, Chantrel, and Natif!

And looking ahead to Monday morning of next week...

Knucklebones: For the Love of Play!
Mon Apr 29, 9-11:30 AM, in the Hall, $15 drop-in
Knucklebones sets up their playspace, featuring a plethora of high
quality, unique athletic games and equipment that promote gross motor
development, physical activity and fun! Drop-in and monthly rates
available.

Please note that April 28th is currently the *last* Monday Knucklebones
has scheduled at the Armory; as the weather gets nicer, the fun moves to
other sites outside. But watch for the playspace to be back at the
Armory on holidays and other special occasions through the year.
