Brooks Mathewson, award-winning nature photographer and ecologist, will give a talk on the ecology of the most abundant vertebrates in the forest – terrestrial salamanders. These organisms are critical indicators of the health of our environment. In addition, they play a vital role in reducing the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. Brooks is currently conducting a study of these salamanders at Fresh Pond Reservation and will tell us about his research. Registration is required; limited to 35 people.

Avian mothers will not be taking a holiday today, so we can enjoy watching them as they gather nesting material and prepare for this year’s brood. Among the birds we may see are Baltimore orioles, yellow warblers, warbling vireos, and redwing blackbirds, all of which come to Fresh Pond to nest and raise their young. Beginning birders are welcome! If you don’t have binoculars you may borrow a pair from us.

In this hands-on workshop, New England Wild Flower Society’s Ted Elliman will help you identify plants, both native and nonnative, and work with volunteers on restoration and maintenance that promotes healthy, biologically diverse urban habitats at Fresh Pond. Be prepared to walk off-path, possibly on damp soil.

Begin this day of remembrance by experiencing the beauty of nature as the spring season unfolds. Our local nesting birds will be active, defending their territories, and searching for food for their young. We will help beginners learn to identify these birds by sight and song. We have binoculars to lend, and will show you how to use them.
