The process of improvisation combines the distinctive voices of its individual performers. The music that results is often surprising, unconventional and dynamic. It s not uncommon to hear music made of electronic crackles, noisy multi-phonics, gurgling, hissing, quiet vocalized gibberish, atonal noodling, bowed metal, blowing sounds, post-everything harmony, and a thousand shades of hullabaloo. You may also see video and dance cohabitating with buzzes, clicks, drones, wooshes, and bleeps in a bizarre galaxy of pitch and spectra! __________________________________________________________________ Some Bios Ken Ueno (born 1970) is an American composer. He studied at the United States Military Academy. He graduated from Berklee College of Music with a B.M. in Film Scoring/Composition Summa Cum Laude, from Boston Unlversity with a M.M., fromYale School of Music with a M.M.A., and from Harvard University with a Ph.D. He has composed orchestral works, for jazz big band and woodwind quintet, and two dance pieces for the Boston Conservatory. He performed at the Flea, New York City. Ueno is a recipient of the 2010/2011 Berlin Prize Fellowship from the American Academy in Berlin. As a performer, Ueno is active as a throat-singing vocalist and performing with live electronics. Todd Brunel is an innovative, critically acclaimed clarinetist and saxophonist, who performs extensively as a crossover classical and jazz musician. As a jazz/improvisational performer and composer, he produces The Vortex Series for New and Improvised Music, a 2010-11 grant recipient from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Cambridge Arts Council and the Somerville Arts Council. The Vortex Series has also been chosen as the jazz "pick of the week" in the Boston Phoenix and the Boston Globe.
