Dear Somerville Arts Council, I am seeking local artist submissions for my thesis project in Museum Studies at the Harvard Extension School. Below is the submission form for my virtual exhibition project. Please let me know if you would be willing to distribute this among your artists. Best, Anna Visualizing Self: Virtual Art Exhibition Submission Form Project Overview Seeking artists to submit a digital image of a unique, original work of art for a virtual exhibition project exploring notions of gender identity, ambiguity and expressions of the visual self. This project is conceived as a master’s degree thesis in Museum Studies for publication in print and web. The goal is to explore, challenge and ideally enlighten museum visitors to various visual explorations of gender and the visual self. The selected work will be featured in the exhibition. Artists will have full credit and published links to website in both printed and web based versions. Guidelines Art museums are key spaces to discuss and confront methods of acceptance, tolerance, and public understanding. The challenge is to envision the museum space as performative, immersed in shifting changes of visual interpretation. With these concepts in mind artists are challenged to create an original work of art that expresses perception of gender identity within a museum space as both public and private. Explore ‘ gender’ as a more fluid concept that moves away from the confines of biological definitions of ‘sex’ as distinctly male and female.
