NESTING BIRD WALK Saturday, June 2 7:30 to 9:30 am Street end of Neville Place driveway 650 Concord Avenue Woods, tangled underbrush, open meadows, and easy access to water make Fresh Pond Reservation a desirable place for birds to raise their young. Our best shot for seeing their nests is now, before the leaves are fully open. We may also have the opportunity to see birds building their nests. We have binoculars to lend and will how you how to use them. Beginners are welcome. A TOUR OF THE WATER PURIFICATION FACILITY Monday, June 4 6 to 7:30 pm Water Purification Facility front door 250 Fresh Pond Parkway Come learn where your tap water originates, how it is purified to make it safe and tasty for drinking and cooking, and the role Fresh Pond plays in the process. Members of the Cambridge Water Department staff will describe the process, answer your questions, and give a tour of the building. DRAWING FROM NATURE Saturday, June 9 2 to 4 pm Maynard Ecology Center Neville Place lower level, 650 Concord Avenue Cambridge artist and teacher Janet Hobbs offers a pencil-drawing class for those who would like to develop their drawing and observational skills. Adults and children ages 10 and older of all experience levels are welcome. We will provide soft lead pencils and paper—bring your own folding stool or chair and your own colored pencils if you have a set. We'll stay indoors if it rains. Limited to 12 participants; registration is required. A FRESH POND RESERVATION WALKABOUT Monday, June 18 6 to 7:30 pm Water Purification Facility front door 250 Fresh Pond Parkway Chip Norton, Watershed Manager for the Cambridge Water Department, will give a walking tour of recently restored areas plus ongoing and future restoration areas at Fresh Pond Reservation. SUMMER SOLSTICE CELEBRATION Monday, June 18 6:30 to 8:30 pm Maynard Ecology Center Neville Place lower level, 650 Concord Avenue Join Boot Boutwell and The Friends of Fresh Pond Reservation in celebrating the summer solstice, the day when the midday sun reaches its highest point in the sky. The summer solstice, which occurs this year on June 20th, marks the longest day (and shortest night) of the year. We will celebrate the season with solstice history and lore, poetry, songs, a solstice story, and a short ceremony to welcome in the solstice. We will also take a walk outdoors to enjoy the beauty of nature and, weather permitting, to watch the sun set. The program will end with refreshments. Registration required – enrollment is limited. SUMMER SOLSTICE BIRD WALK Wednesday, June 20 6:30 to 8:30 pm Street end of Neville Place driveway 650 Concord Avenue If you can’t bear to get up at dawn to look at birds, this walk is for you. Just as people take advantage of the longest days of the year to continue their outdoor activities, so do birds. They need the extra hours of daylight to forage for food for their hungry babies. Beginning birders are welcome. We have binoculars to lend and will show you how to use them. Through the Lens: Growth
A Photography Exhibit by MIT students

The exhibited projects, realized by students of 4.343 Advanced Photography and Related Media,  artistically explore systemic, socio-political, and psychological issues around concepts of growth.

Throughout the spring semester, MIT students investigated aspects of the ongoing transformation of the human environment since industrialization—on physical, psychological and systemic levels—and grappled with the concept of limits to growth on a finite planet.

The projects test photography’s potential to understand and reflect our current state and possible systemic problems that originate from our modes of existence. Accordion scrap books were produced throughout the semester as a tool for research and project/concept development.

Location: MIT Media Lab Complex Building E14
Lobby, 2nd, and 3rd Floor
75 Amherst Street, Cambridge, MA

Exhibit runs through May 30, 2012
Hours: Monday–Friday, 9a–5p

The Future Archive
The exhibition project The Future Archive picks up on artistic research projects of the 1970s and 1980s from the environment of the Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS), founded in 1967 by György Kepes and located at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge / USA. It shows how artists, architects and designers respond to this in their current interdisciplinary work. The groundbreaking artistic approaches of CAVS directors, György Kepes and Otto Piene, and CAVS fellows, a generation influenced by the Bauhaus and postwar Modernism, were ahead of their time. Even today, these radical ideas and collective projects of the so-called Techno-Social Movement serve as point of departure for contemporary art production. In addition to historical and current documentary material from the CAVS and its surroundings, the exhibition brings together recent artistic and creative works. Parallel to this, video films by CAVS professors and fellows from n.b.k.’s collection Video-Forum are on view.

Projects and contributions by: Maryanne Amacher, Luis Berríos-Negrón, Muriel Cooper, Olafur Eliasson, Florian Hecker, György Kepes, Richard Leacock/ Jon Rubin, Marvin Minsky, Amanda Moore, Otto Piene, Micah Silver / Robert The, Aldo Tambellini, Urbonas Studio/ Nader Tehrani NADAAA, Markus Weisbeck.

Opening Reception: Saturday, June 2, 2012, 7 p
Location: n.b.k.
Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.)
Chausseestraße 128/129

LYNN GALLERY EXHIBITION - May 29, 2012

Lynn’s artistic community has a lot to celebrate, and Lynn Arts is hosting just the event to do so. Celebrating the Arts” is a three-gallery exhibition featuring the artwork of K-12 students from all 24 of Lynn’s public schools. Finally, this evening is also the perfect chance to admire the newly completed mosaic mural installed on the Lynn Arts building. Lynn Secondary Students completed the mosaic in collaboration with Lynn Arts resident artists David Fitcher, Yetti Frankel, and Joshua Winer.

Please join the artists on Tuesday, May 29th from 6:00pm – 8:00pm to celebrate all three of these fantastic achievements. All events are free and open to the public and take place at the Lynn Arts building, located at 25 Exchange Street, Lynn.

Local faves Revolutionary Snake Ensemble and Willie "Loco" Alexander will perform later in the evening. Roger Miller will also teach riotous surrealist games developed during the 1920's and '30's heyday of surrealism. Miller will explain and lead the games, and provide incidental surrealist music. Games include Exquisite Corpse drawing and word games that allow the entire audience to participate and express themselves creatively. The results cause “Amusement and occasional stunning connections,” says Miller. “It's a total hoot. Everyone has a blast.” He has previously led these games at two sold-out events at Arts at the Armory. Miller will also project surrealist films silently throughout the evening.

“I am honored to participate in this wonderful event, and to support one of our community’s most important arts centers as it celebrates its commitment to arts and culture in the City of Somerville,” said Mayor Curtatone. “As one of the City’s largest and most historic buildings, the Center for Arts at the Armory has played host to some very successful cultural, business and entertainment events and we are truly fortunate to have such a wonderful community partner. I look forward to working with the Armory as we continue to support the Somerville arts community.”

All funds raised will benefit Arts at the Armory’s acclaimed cultural programming, which provides some of the most inventive music, theater and performing artists in the Boston area, year-round. Events have included the City of Somerville’s Inaugural Celebration, TEDx Somerville, the ongoing Somerville Winter Farmer’s Market, and Robin Bowman’s award-winning exhibit It’s Complicated: The American Teenager, as well as a range of arts educational programs for adults and children.

“This is a night to celebrate the artist inside all of us,” said Debra McLaughlin, Executive Director of Arts at the Armory. “We also need community support to allow us to continue to be a part of Somerville’s vibrant cultural landscape.”
