The Arts & Business Council is now accepting applications for our
Artist's Professional Toolbox program,
which is in its 7th year. We have a fabulous line-up of professional development workshops planned. We're looking for 30 visual artists interested in accelerating their career and gaining the knowledge and confidence necessary to attain their own version of success. To that end, I'd be happy to provide an
informational session
about this program to your constituents this month. We could also consider extending the application date to September 15th if the first two weeks of September is more convenient for your member group.

Rocky Neck Gallery continues its Summer Artist Series with "Proprietary Chaos," photographs of street life and informal communities of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, taken over the last four years by Laurence Kent Jones. Images include street scenes and over-sized stitched panoramas of informally built hillside neighborhoods and comparison photos of neighborhoods before and after the January 2010 earthquake. The show opens Wednesday, Aug. 17 and continues until Tuesday, Aug. 30. A reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, Aug. 20, from 6-8 p.m. The artist will give a presentation at 7. The public is invited.

Laurence Kent Jones has been assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti for the last four years as part of a stabilization project focused on an economically deprived section of the city. As a result he spent a lot more time at the street level than the average diplomat. "Of course, I always had my camera with me!" With his photographs, Jones presents a moment in time that may be washed away or possibly reveals the seeds of a modern style of infrastructure unique to the needs and conditions of a large and tropical island.

Rocky Neck Gallery, 53 Rocky Neck Avenue, Gloucester, is open June through Columbus Day. Hours are Sunday: 12-6, Monday to Wednesday: 11-6 and Thursday to Saturday: 11- 8. www.rockyneckgallery.com Tel: 978-282-0917 Check our Facebook page and Twitter

Tibetan Sand Mandala in Marblehead
August 11, 12, 13, 14

Marblehead, MA - The Marblehead Arts Association (MAA) is pleased to announce during four days in August the public is invited to view the creation of a Tibetan Sand Mandala at the King Hooper Mansion, 8 Hooper Street, Marblehead, MA 01945.

Geshe Gendun Gyatso, a Tibetan Monk and trained Mandala master will construct a sand Mandala on August 11, 12, 13, 14 in the Ballroom Gallery. A Sand Mandala is an intricate sand painting dedicated to world peace. Layers of gem-colored sand are painstakingly placed grain by grain on a 4foot circle, infused with prayers and meditation, to form a breathtakingly
beautiful symbolic design of the universe. Geshe Gendun Gyatso goal in creating mandalas are to inform and enlighten people to the path of achieving happiness and inner peace through the simplicity of existence, how to defeat day to day anxiety, insecurity, anger and discouragement.

Geshe Gendun Gyatso was born in Ladakh, India in 1961. In 1969, at the age of eight, he became a Buddhist Monk at Sera Je Monastic University in southern India. He studied logic and epistemology, the study of nature of knowledge. In 1982, he was fully ordained by His Holiness The Dalai Lama. He studied in the Geshe Program for twenty-five years including Tantric Study at Gyumed Tantric College in India. In 1993 he was awarded his doctorate (Geshe) degree in Buddhist Studies as a Doctor of Buddhist Philosophy. After obtaining his doctorate degree Geshe Gyatso went to England to learn and study the English language. He is now fluent in English as well as his native Tibetan language and numerous Indian dialects.

Geshe Gendun Gyatso went on to study comparative religion as a visiting scholar under the Boston University Fellowship Program for Theological Study.During his studies Geshe Gendun became an Affiliated Chaplain at Boston University and Chaplain at Harvard's Dana Faber Cancer Institute.

Between 2002 and 2005 Geshe Gendun Gyatso taught at several dharma centers in Colorado. He founded the Healing Dharma Center in Boston in 2005, and continues teaching there today.
Geshe Gyatso continues to travel extensively around the world providing teaching to the public and private counseling sectors.

MAA artist member, Kathleen Staab, was so inspired by Geshe Gendun Gyatso's Sand Mandala that was created this April in Rockport, MA that she wanted to bring this experience to Marblehead Arts Association during her exhibit here in August titled "Reflect and Reflections". This exhibit of exquisite watercolors explores many of the same themes as the Mandala, the opportunity to use artwork as a way to stop the busyness of everyday life and reflect on the beauty that surrounds us.

Mandala construction is on Thursday, August 11 through Sunday, August 13, from 10am to 5pm. In the late afternoon on Sunday, August 14, the Sand Mandala will be ritually swept-up in an elaborate ceremony and carried in procession to the ocean, where the Mandala will be poured into the Atlantic, dispersing the prayers for peace and compassion throughout the entire world. All are welcome to participate.

We are seeking sponsors for this opportunity to bring Geshe Gendun Gyatso to the Marblehead Arts. Please contact the MAA if you wish to contribute, any amount is welcome.

Good news about the NEA from the Americans For the Arts

July 29, 2011

Good News! Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives successfully voted down an amendment proposed by Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI) that would have cut an additional $10.6 million in funding for the National Endowment for the Arts from the FY 2012 Interior Appropriations bill. Thanks to the efforts of arts advocates like you across the country, more than 35,000 messages were sent in the last month to Capitol Hill in support of NEA funding. It made a difference! The amendment was defeated soundly by a vote of 240 to 181. You can see how your representative voted on the amendment here:

http://capwiz.com/artsusa/vote.xc/?votenum=670&chamber=H&congress=1121&voteid=52336506&state=US

Through our E-Advocacy Center, you can easily write your representative about this vote.

http://capwiz.com/artsusa/issues/alert/?alertid=52373536

We've made it easy by automatically matching up a letter of thanks for you to send to those House members who voted against the Walberg Amendment. For those House members who voted for the Walberg Amendment, you can send a letter expressing your disappointment.

What's Next
As Congress continues to debate a debt ceiling resolution, final consideration of the full Interior Appropriations bill has been delayed. The House of Representatives hopes to finish this legislation before they break for the proposed August recess. It is unclear when the Senate will begin work on their version of this appropriations bill and negotiate a final compromise with the House - but it would most likely take place later in the fall.
