AUGUST PROGRAMS AT FRESH POND RESERVATION - August 2011

These events are FREE and open to the public. Children are welcome in the company of an adult.

NATIVE FERNS OF NEW ENGLAND
Wednesday, August 3
7 to 8:30 pm
Cambridge Public Library
449 Broadway
Don Lubin, fern expert, will talk about the life cycle of ferns and their evolutionary history spanning 400 million years. From among New England’s 68 native species, we will examine twenty of those most commonly found. This survey will include detailed photographs, techniques for field identification, and a look at the adaptive niche that each species occupies. Don Lubin has been teaching about ferns for over a decade and he grows 44 species in his small yard in Allston. He has collected more than 50 herbarium specimens and has identified previously unrecorded taxa at several locales in Massachusetts. This program is offered by Grow Native Massachusetts, with support from Friends of Fresh Pond Reservation.

SURVEY OF AQUATIC PLANTS AT BLACK’S NOOK
Tuesday, August 9
6:30 to 8 pm
Maynard Ecology Center, basement of Neville Place
650 Concord Avenue
Come participate in this yearly survey of the aquatic plants of Black’s Nook! We'll use a variety of nets and buckets to collect the plants, then go indoors to identify them with the help of a dichotomous key. The balance between native and exotic/invasive plants in a pond can be used as an indicator of the health of that environment. Please register.

WILDFLOWER IDENTIFICATION USING NEWCOMB'S WILDFLOWER GUIDE
Thursday, August 11
6:30 to 8 pm
Water Purification Facility front door
250 Fresh Pond Parkway
If you find yourself wishing that you could identify the flowers that you see as you walk around Fresh Pond, this program may be just right for you! We will demonstrate the use of Newcomb’s, a wildflower guide that really works; then we will identify some beautiful specimens in the nearby Water Department planting beds. We have Newcomb’s guides and lenses to lend, or you can bring your own.

TELLING OUR STORY: FRESH POND AND THE CIVIL WAR –
13 DAYS IN JUNE 1861
Saturday, August 13
1 to 3 pm
Location given on registration
Join Chief Ranger Jean Rogers and be a history detective – examine copies of maps, letters, and newspaper articles to better understand the role Fresh Pond played at the start of the Civil War. Participants will then create a poster of their findings to be hung in the Ranger Station for other visitors to explore. This is a participatory, activity-based program, offered in conjunction with Cambridge Discovery Days. Advance registration required by August 7: Contact Ranger Jean Rogers, 617-349-4793 or jrogers@cambridgema.gov.

VISIT THE WOODLAND RESTORATION DEMONSTRATION PROJECT
Sunday, August 14
2 to 3:30 pm
Follow the signs counterclockwise from the Water Department for about ¼ mile to the Woodland Project entrance.
Fresh Pond’s Woodland Restoration Demonstration Project has been planted primarily with species that are considered to be native to the area that is now Middlesex County. The volunteers who manage this project will give you a tour and tell you about the plants. There is a circular path to walk on and during this program the plants will be labeled. Come learn about native plants that you might want to use in your own garden. No dogs, please!

PLANT IDENTIFICATION WORKSHOP
Monday, August 15
6 to 8 pm
Water Purification Facility front door
250 Fresh Pond Parkway
Join New England Wildflower Society botanists and Fresh Pond Reservation volunteer stewards in learning about the plant communities found at Fresh Pond Reservation. This hands-on workshop will include native and invasive plant identification, training on invasive weed removal, and information on how you can help out at Fresh Pond.

A TOUR OF THE WATER PURIFICATION FACILITY
Monday, August 22
6 to 7:30 pm
Water Purification Facility front door
250 Fresh Pond Parkway
Come learn how water that falls as rain in the western suburbs is transported to Cambridge, purified into drinking water, and piped to our homes and businesses. Members of the Cambridge Water Department staff will describe the process, answer your questions, and give a tour of the building.

SPECIMEN TREE INVENTORY AND DATA COLLECTION

Tuesday, August 23
5:30 to 7:30 pm
Water Purification Facility parking lot
250 Fresh Pond Parkway
Join volunteer stewards and help us to begin to inventory the big and unique trees at Fresh Pond while updating tree data from the Fresh Pond Natural Resources Inventory.
