JULY PROGRAMS AT FRESH POND RESERVATION - July 2011

These events are FREE and open to the public. Children are welcome in the company of an adult.

SUMMER BIRD WALK
Sunday, July 10
7:30 to 9:30 am
Street end of Neville Place driveway
650 Concord Avenue
During the summer, early morning is the best time to look for birds because they are most active when the air is cool and they are hungry for breakfast. We may find adults feeding babies in the nest and fledglings that are following their parents and chirping for food. As always, beginning birders are welcome. We have binoculars to lend and will show you how to use them.

CAMBRIDGE BLACK SWALLOWWORT POD PATROL KICKOFF
Sunday, July 10
1 to 4 pm
Water Purification Facility front door
250 Fresh Pond Parkway
Black Swallowwort is one of the most aggressive invasive weeds, and it is spreading at Fresh Pond and throughout Cambridge. You can help limit its further spread by removing the spindle-like pods before they release their wind-borne seeds. Join other volunteers and Water Department staff as we learn more about swallowwort and start removing the pods around the Reservation; then take what you learn into your own neighborhood. During the summer we’ll be tracking our progress block by block throughout Cambridge. The Pod Patrol campaign is co-sponsored with the City of Cambridge, Grow Native Massachusetts, and CentersAndSquares.com. Contact Deb at fpr@cambridgema.gov or 617-349-6489 for more information.

WEEDING IN THE KINGSLEY BIOSWALE
Wednesday evenings: July 13, 20, and 27
5:30 to 7:30 pm
Volunteer trailer in the Water Purification Facility parking lot
250 Fresh Pond Parkway
You can participate in this stewardship project with Friends group naturalists and gardeners who are removing invasive weeds from the beautiful bioswale at the base of the Kingsley Park hillside. We will provide plant ID training, gloves, and tools. If you are new, please let us know you are coming (see below).

FRIENDS OF FRESH POND RESERVATION ANNUAL MEMBERS’ PICNIC
Sunday, July 17
5:30 to 7:30 pm
Neville Place back patio
650 Concord Avenue
Join us for a relaxed evening of conversation and good food at this potluck picnic supper on Neville Place’s garden patio. Newcomers are welcome. Bring a favorite dish and we will provide tables, drinks, and dinnerware. After we eat, we will visit one of the restored natural areas nearby. If it rains we will meet indoors. RSVP at the e-mail or phone number below.

A TOUR OF THE WATER PURIFICATION FACILITY
Monday, July 18
6 to 7:30 pm
Water Purification Facility front door
250 Fresh Pond Parkway
Come learn how water that falls as rain in the western suburbs is transported to Cambridge, purified into drinking water, and piped to our homes and businesses. Members of the Cambridge Water Department staff will describe the process, answer your questions, and give a tour of the building.

PURPLE LOOSESTRIFE BIOCONTROL PROJECT:
MEASURING AND MONITORING
Monday, July 18
5:30 to 7:30 pm
Water Purification Facility parking lot
250 Fresh Pond Parkway
Join Fresh Pond volunteer stewards for our 5th annual purple loosestrife biocontrol data collection. Come find out about invasive purple loosestrife, the Galerucella beetle, and what they have to do with each other. We'll be gathering and recording data to help us figure out if the beetles are helping control the loosestrife population at Little Fresh Pond. This event replaces the regularly scheduled Volunteer Stewards meetup. Free flowers for those who register: 617-349-6489 or fpr@cambridgema.gov.

PURPLE LOOSESTRIFE BIOCONTROL PROJECT: BEETLE BRIGADE
Thursday, July 21
10 am to noon
Water Purification Facility parking lot
250 Fresh Pond Parkway
Join Fresh Pond volunteer stewards for the 5th annual release of Galerucella beetles, whose favorite food is invasive purple loosestrife. We’ll release the beetles in the large patch of loosestrife at Little Fresh Pond. This event replaces our regularly scheduled Volunteer Stewards meetup. Free flowers for those who register: 617-349-6489 or fpr@cambridgema.gov.

PLANT IDENTIFICATION WORKSHOP
Monday, July 25
6 to 8 pm
Water Purification Facility front door
250 Fresh Pond Parkway
Join New England Wildflower Society botanists and Fresh Pond Reservation Volunteer Stewards in learning about the plant communities found at Fresh Pond Reservation. This hands-on workshop will include native and invasive plant identification, training on invasive weed removal, and information on how you can help out at Fresh Pond.

Please register for each event that you plan to attend. You will receive directions and information on parking when you register. E-mail Elizabeth Wylde at friendsoffreshpond@yahoo.com or call 617-349-6489 and leave your name and phone number.
