These programs are free and open to the public. Children are welcome in the company of an adult.
TOUR OF THE WATER PURIFICATION FACILITY
Monday, May 2
6 to 7:30 pm
Water Purification Facility front door
250 Fresh Pond Parkway
Learn how water that falls as rain in the western suburbs is transported to Cambridge, purified into drinking water, and piped to our local homes and businesses. Members of the Cambridge Water Department will describe the process, answer your questions, and give a tour of the building. This tour is part of the Cambridge Science Festival (April 30-May 8) and National Drinking Water Week (May 2-7).

Come celebrate Fresh Pond Day, a great way to learn about all that is special about the largest open space in Cambridge. The day will feature activities around the Reservation for participants of all ages, with games, live music, tours, demonstrations, and information tables. Come help clear the reservation of this invasive weed that spreads rapidly and
degrades the habitat for other plants and animals. Groups will leave from the Friends of Fresh Pond Reservation information table hourly beginning at 10:30.
FRESH POND DAY WOODLAND RESTORATION PROJECT VISIT

Fresh Pond’s Woodland Restoration Project has been planted primarily with species that historically (when European settlers arrived) were native to what is now Middlesex County. There is a circular path to walk on and, during Fresh Pond Day, the plants will be labeled. This is a good place to learn about native plants that you might want to use in your own garden. No dogs, please!
FRESH POND DAY MINI NATURE WALKS: LET NATURE BE YOUR TEACHER*

Take a thirty minute miniwalk and discover what it is like to look at birds through binoculars, identify trees by their leaves, study life under a log, and take part in other hands-on nature-related activities. Children love a good story and there’s no better subject than the wonders of nature! Kids can hear two books read today: at 11 am it’s "The Stories Trees Tell" by Susan Coolidge (for ages 3 to 8) and at 1 pm it’s "Living Sunlight” by Molly Bang and Penny Chisholm (for ages 6 and over).

This is the season when birds are at the peak of their singing, both for attracting mates and defending their territories. During this walk we will focus on listening as a way of identifying and locating birds. Birders of all experience levels are welcome. We have binoculars to lend and will show you how to use them.

Randi Mail, Cambridge recycling director, will talk with us about ways we can live more sustainably including composting indoors and out, wise recycling, and getting rid of stuff without throwing it away. This should be an enjoyable and informative evening, with time for discussion and questions.

Join New England Wildflower Society botanists and Fresh Pond Reservation Volunteer Stewards in learning about the plant communities found at Fresh Pond Reservation. This hands-on workshop will include native and invasive plant identification, training on invasive weed removal, and information on how can help out at Fresh Pond. Future Monday workshops: May 16, June 20, July 25, and August 15.
MIGRATORY BIRD WALK

Migratory birds such as Baltimore orioles, yellow warblers and warbling vireos come to Fresh Pond to nest and raise their young. Other species, including waterfowl and many songbirds, use it as a resting place while heading farther north. Now is the time to see them all. Beginners are welcome! If you don’t have binoculars you may borrow a pair from us.

“Building a Citizen's Movement to Address the Greatest Challenge of our Time - Our Changing Climate - and in the Process Building Community” is the title of a talk by Ileana Jones, a retired science teacher and a member of The Climate Project and the Citizens Climate Lobby. She will use slides to illustrate her talk and you will have an opportunity to take action on this most vital issue by participating in the Million Letter March. Please bring either your laptop or pen and paper.

Chip Norton, Cambridge Watershed Manager, will give a tour of Cambridge-owned land in the upper Cambridge watershed. We will car pool from the Purification Facility parking lot, leaving promptly at 6. Long pants and sturdy shoes or boots are recommended. Registration is required! Future Upper Watershed Walk: September 26
