These events are FREE and open to the public. Children are welcome in the company of an adult

RESERVATION RAMBLE Fridays
9 – 10 am
Fresh Pond Kids: Bring your parents and friends and join us for a leisurely walk to meet plants and animals living in the reservation. Meet at the Water Dept front door. Bring your own snacks. Rain cancels.
To get on the email list, contact Deb 617.349.6489 fpr@cambridgema.gov

A TOUR OF THE WATER PURIFICATION FACILITY

Monday, June 6, 6 to 7:30 pm
Water Purification Facility front door
250 Fresh Pond Parkway
Come learn how water that falls as rain in the western suburbs is transported to Cambridge, purified into drinking water, and piped to our homes and businesses. Members of the Cambridge Water Department staff will describe the process, answer your questions, and give a tour of the building.

NESTING BIRD WALK

Sunday, June 12, 7:30 to 9:30 am
650 Concord Avenue (street end of Neville Place driveway) Woods, tangled underbrush, open meadows, and easy access to water make Fresh Pond Reservation a desirable place for birds to raise their young. Our best shot for seeing their nests is now, before the leaves are fully open. We may also have the opportunity to see birds building their nests. We have binoculars to lend and will show you how to use them. Beginners are welcome.

A FRESH POND RESERVATION WALKABOUT

Monday, June 13, 6 to 7:30 pm
Water Purification Facility front door
250 Fresh Pond Parkway
Chip Norton, Cambridge Watershed Manager, will give a tour of Fresh Pond Reservation’s conservation and recreation areas. He also will use maps and diagrams to help illustrate the goals for these major restoration projects.

CELEBRATE THE SUMMER SOLSTICE

Sunday, June 19, 6:30 to 8:30 pm
Maynard Ecology Center, basement of Neville Place 650 Concord Avenue
Boot Boutwell leads a celebration of the summer solstice, the day when the midday sun reaches it’s highest point in the sky. The summer solstice, which occurs this year on June 21st, marks the longest day (and shortest night) of the year. We will celebrate the season with solstice history and lore, poetry, songs, a solstice story, and a short ceremony to welcome in the solstice. We will also take a walk to enjoy the beauty of nature and, weather permitting, to watch the sun set. The program will end with refreshments. Pre-registration is required; limit 25 people.

PLANT IDENTIFICATION WORKSHOP

Monday, June 20, 6 to 8 pm
Water Purification Facility Front Door
250 Fresh Pond Parkway
Join New England Wildflower Society botanists and Fresh Pond Reservation Volunteer Stewards in learning about the plant communities found at Fresh Pond Reservation. This hands-on workshop will include native and invasive plant identification, training on invasive weed removal, and information on how you can help out at Fresh Pond. Future Monday workshops: July 25 and August 8.

SUMMER SOLSTICE BIRD WALK

Tuesday, June 21, 6:30 to 8:30 pm
Street end of Neville Place driveway
650 Concord Avenue
If you can’t bear to get up at dawn to look at birds, this walk is for you. Just as people take advantage of the longest days of the year to continue their outdoor activities, so do birds. They need the extra hours of daylight to forage for food for their hungry babies. Beginning birders are welcome. We have binoculars to lend and will show you how to use them.

INTRODUCTION TO LICHENS

Saturday, June 25, 1 to 3 pm
Maynard Ecology Center, basement of Neville Place 650 Concord Avenue Elizabeth Kneiper, a naturalist with a special interest in lichens, will introduce us to the biology and ecology of some of the plant world’s most interesting composite organisms -lichens. After the talk, Elizabeth will guide us on a walk around Fresh Pond to see if we can find, identify, and observe some of the local lichen species.

OUR URBAN ECOSYSTEM

Sundays: June 26, July 24, August 28, 1 to 3 pm
Location given on registration
Join Chief Ranger Jean Rogers for a 3-part series about our local ecology. We’ll use hands-on activities, observation, data collection, and journaling to discover interactions and relationships among living and non-living elements of our urban ecosystem. All that’s required are an open mind, a willingness to go beyond naming and defining things, and a commitment to attend all three sessions. Limited to 15 adults. For more information and to register, contact jrogers@CambridgeMA.GOV. Confirmation and program outline will be available to registrants one week before the start.

Please register for each event that you plan to attend. Important information on parking will be given to you when you register. E-mail Elizabeth Wylde at friendsoffreshpond@yahoo.com or call 617-349-6489 and leave your name and phone number.

2. STEWARDSHIP INVITATION

Hi Friends,

This summer, as we have done for the past several years, volunteers will be removing invasive weeds from the Kingsley Park Bioswale, a native plants area at the base of the Kingsley Park hillside that the Friends group 'adopted' in 2008.

We welcome the participation of anyone, member or non-member, who would like to come weed with us. We will provide gloves and tools.

Elizabeth Wylde and Betsy Meyer will lead weeding sessions there from 5:30 to 7:30 pm on Wednesdays, June 15, 29, July 13, 20, 27 until the bioswale is once again free of burdock, mugwort, and a handful of other intruders.

If you would like to participate only in the Kingsley Bioswale weeding, please email Elizabeth by return email at friendsoffreshpond@yahoo.com

In addition you are invited to participate in the Cambridge Water Department's Fresh Pond Stewardship Program, which conducts weeding sessions in other restored areas of the Reservation. Our help there can have a considerable impact on the onslaught of invasive weeds that threaten to overgrow the native plants for which the city has invested a considerable amount of time, effort, and money. The Volunteer Stewards program meets on Monday nights from 5:30 – 7:30 pm and on Thursday mornings from 10 am – 12 pm. We’ll also lead Weekend Weedouts on Sundays from 1 – 4 pm on the following dates:

June 5: black swallow-wort dig
July 10: black swallow-wort pod pull and Cambridge Pod Patrol campaign kickoff
August 7: mugwort
September 11: oriental bittersweet
October 16: buckthorn
November 6: buckthorn

All volunteer steward programs meet at the volunteer trailer in the Water Department parking lot. Tools and training provided. To join us, email Deb at fpr@CambridgeMA.GOV or call 617.349.6489
