SEEKING SOMERVILLE PATRIOTS DAY COLONIAL FAIR VOLUNTEERS - April 18, 2011

The Somerville Historic Preservation Department, Historic Somerville, Inc. and the Somerville Museum need 10 volunteers-both men and women - to help run the Patriots Day Colonial Fair to be held at Foss Park, 8-12 AM on Monday, April 18th. If you are a long-time resident or new to the area, this is a very fun way to participate in the annual historical reenactment of Paul Revere's ride through Somerville. Reenactment of Paul Revere's annual ride on horseback has been a longstanding tradition in the communities through which he rode in 1775, however, in order to entertain people in a meaningful way while they wait for Mr. Revere, we have been holding a very well attended and fun Colonial Fair at Foss Park for several years. We've started a "passport" system of having children move from one Colonial era activity to another, receiving a stamp at each station when they complete the activitiy, and ultimately receiving a prize for their efforts. The games will be chosen among favorites such as hop scotch, cat's cradle, ring toss, bean bag throwing, jump rope, knot tying, yoyo, and hoop rolling. Volunteers are needed to oversee the activities. You do need to dress in Colonial era clothing, but we have that for you. You will need to learn one of the games, but we'll teach you if you don't know it already. The time commitment is minimal: You need only attend a general meeting and a fitting for clothing prior to the actual day's events.

Please contact me at admin@historicsomerville.org if you're interested. Many thanks!
