Computers + Visual & Literary Arts: A Panel Discussion @ MIT on March 8

Manfred Mohr, p-300b, 1980

Drawing with Code, the exhibition curated by George Fifield of works from the Anne
and Michael Spalter collection that celebrates a selection of computer-generated
art by the form's earliest and most important practitioners from the 1950s to
today, opened last month at the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum to much acclaim.
Panel Discussion at MIT
Moderated by John Maeda, President of the Rhode Island School of Design.
Tuesday, March 8, 7 pm
Bartos Auditorium [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=4hcz47bab&et=1104681347841&s=2873&e=001IWPNB7I6KQW0LuqfmGbKzlg_WoDqi9_QV0HAZn6RM6D3KkkA5oVEl_OBsaB1Pkg0RJCJH5Rp0WUEgkuOA7X1L80STEQS--J5zbF031Ta48CTTW5mYPoVPpB29c3fDnDETsaUOQG1CkA=],
MIT Campus
Join deCordova and MIT for an evening event focused on how the computer has creatively
influenced both the visual and literary arts in this panel discussion. Hear from
Drawing with Code curator George Fifield, exhibiting artist Mark Wilson, and writers
who employ computers in their creative practice as they discuss the history behind
this fascinating intersection between science and art. Held in collaboration with
MIT's Purple Blurb series, this event is co-organized by deCordova and MIT.

Sculptural Weaving Workshop

Natalie Miebach: Sculptural Weaving

Join Cyberarts Festival artist Nathalie Miebach for a sculptural weaving workshop
at the Fuller Craft Museum on March 8 to March 12.

This course will enable artists to explore and invent various ways of weaving into
three-dimensions. Based on weaving traditions that go back thousands of years, participants
will learn the fundamentals of basic sculptural weaving techniques: twining, plaiting,
coiling and random weave. Through the use of traditional and non-traditional materials,
participants will learn to use these techniques as a springboard to adapt, integrate,
and explore their own sculptural interests and material choices. Techniques for
treating surfaces, such as dying, embellishment, over-weaves and painting will also
be explored.

Hands-on work will be complemented by slide lectures and discussions examining the
adaptations and significance of weaves in contemporary and traditional cultures,
and how these techniques have been used by traditional basket weavers and contemporary
artists across disciplines.

For details and registration, visit the Fuller Craft Musem website. [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=4hcz47bab&et=1104681347841&s=2873&e=001IWPNB7I6KQU9n1CoGcvcWDZkakz07XLVYEOI0jZP1bpt2prrUb1y9pRwDvOJGu2faR9uBetg8iwSyCY9DjXr78uOlUU7I41YWi6AYMT4YwdcN3q84rjkQwB94b8YB0MbmchfI3rAcBeuADWvTX5M9Q==]

MCC <3 Cyberarts

The Massachusetts Cultural Council loves Cyberarts and we love them. The MCC recently
awarded the Boston Cyberarts Festival a prestigious Adams Arts Program Grant. Is
it because of our focus on technical innovation? Perhaps our involvement of artists
and organizations from across the Commonwealth? Or maybe our diverse offerings of
visual art, dance, theater, film, video, education, demonstrations and lecture programming?
How about the economic impact that new media has on our region? I think it might
be all of the above. We are extremely grateful for the continued support of the
MCC and look forward to seeing the impact of the Adams grant on this year's festival.
