BROOKLINE ARTS CENTER EXHIBITION - January 18 - February 29, 2011
Complexity of Color and Shape Interact in
Marc Mancuso’s Sculpture and Ceramics
on View at the Brookline Arts Center
(January 11, 2011 -- Brookline, MA) On Friday, January 21, 2011, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. the popular Brookline Arts Center teacher Marc Mancuso will open an exhibition of his brightly-colored sculptural ceramics. The title, “Balancing Devotion and Obsession,” describes Marc’s relationship to artistic creativity.
“But after a few hours working in the studio, he can become obsessed, with such fascinating results as elaborate structure and exquisite interlacing surface forms, ” explains the Brookline Arts Center Executive Director Susan Navarre.
The one-person gallery exhibition will be on view at the Brookline Arts Center from January 18 through February 29, 2011 and represents the first time that the Somerville-based artist has exhibited this series of artworks, which range in size from two inches to nearly four feet tall.
“My mode of work is painstaking, probably even obsessive, flamboyantly displaying the craftsmanship, rare materials, and time that were invested in them. My surface decoration is based on embroidery, as well as Japanese and Tibetan art, and my shapes are inspired by Baroque architecture and the classical detailing of Cambodia’s Angkor Wat,” Mancuso explains.
Mancuso has taught ceramics, drawing and painting for children and adults at the Brookline Arts Center since 2006. He also teaches at Cambridge’s Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The Brookline Arts Center is located at 86 Monmouth Street, at the corner of St. Mary’s Street and accessible by MBTA train or bus. The gallery is open Monday - Friday from 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., and is wheelchair accessible. For more information, visit http://www.brooklineartscenter.com/events/exhibitions/mancuso.html
