BOSTON GALLERY PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION - Sep - Nov 2010
THIS SEPTEMBER
Heights of Observation | The Photographs of Vittorio Sella
Vittorio Sella
Vittorio Sella, Moraine Lake on the Baltoro Glacier above Urdukas, 1909
Panopticon Gallery is pleased to be exhibiting the work of Italian mountaineer and photographer Vittorio Sella from September 9 – November 8, 2010. This exhibition, curated by Tony Decaneas will showcase contemporary photographs printed from the artist's original glass-plate negatives.
Sella's photographs precede the majestic images created by Bradford Washburn and Ansel Adams. Washburn was once quoted as saying, "Sella was definitely my first inspiration in mountaineering photography. His photographs of the Mount Saint Elias Expedition of 1898 led by the Duke of Abruzzi were some of the earliest photographs that got my attention." Adams, who wrote the preface to Sella's monograph Summit, said, "Sella has brought to us not only the facts and forms of far-off splendors of the world, but the essence of experience which finds a spiritual response in the inner recesses of our mind and heart."
Opening Reception: Thursday, September 16, 2010, 5:30 – 7:30pm.
