Santa and Specters and Snow… Oh MY!
It’s all part of the summer fun on Georges Island Sunday
in celebration of Edward Rowe Snow Day

On Sunday, Aug. 22, the birthday of raconteur extraordinaire Edward Rowe Snow will be celebrated on Georges Island with a visit by Flying Santa, tales of the paranormal, and, of course, birthday cake in an annual event hosted by the Friends of the Boston Harbor Islands.

A variety of FREE activities will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Georges Island to honor the historian, newspaper columnist and radio personality who worked tirelessly to preserve the island’s Civil War-era Fort Warren for future generations. All events are free.

The day will be marked with a visit by Flying Santa, who will arrive by helicopter at 1:15 p.m. The appearance is being arranged by Friends of Flying Santa, a group carrying on the New England tradition of providing holiday gifts and other supplies to isolated lighthouse families. See www.flyingsanta.org for more history. In 1936, Snow started helping out the Flying Santa program and he continued until the late 1970s.

Headlining the speakers on Snow Day will be Jay Schmidt, author of “Fort Warren: New England's Most Historic Civil War Site,” who will speak on the paranormal activities and ghosts at the fort and who will lead a tour focusing on the legacy of Mr. Snow.

Birthday cake will be served by Dolly Bicknell, Edward Rowe Snow’s daughter, who as a little girl accompanied him on his Flying Santa flights, and other members of the Snow clan.

There will be children’s crafts and storytelling provided by FBHI volunteers, and tours of the fort will be provided by DCR rangers as well as Jay Schmidt. Acting as emcee will be Stephanie Schorow, author of “East of Boston: Notes from the Harbor Islands.”

Jay Schmidt is a 10th generation New Englander and the great-great grandson of a Union soldier. He is a Civil War re-enactor and a former Vermont State Game Warden. Both a writer and photographer, he has written articles for Yankee, New England Printer & Publisher, Vermont Life, and other periodicals.

Snow was born on Aug. 22, 1902, in Winthrop and published more than 40 books and numerous publications. He also wrote a newspaper column and hosted his own radio show. Snow died in 1982, and in 2000 a plaque to his memory was placed on Georges Island, a place that he fought to preserve and promote.

The program begins at 11:30 a.m. Jay Schmidt will speak at 11:45 a.m. and lead a tour of the fort at noon and again at 1:30 p.m. Friends of Mr. Snow and his daughter will speak and share memories beginning at noon. DCR rangers will lead a tour of the fort at 12:30 while FBHI volunteer Bob Hearsey will present a story telling program. Flying Santa is scheduled to arrived about 1:15.

For a complete schedule of Snow Day activities, go to www.fbhi.org or call the Friends of the Boston Harbor Islands at 781-740-4290.

To get to Georges Island for Edward Rowe Snow Day, visitors may catch ferries leaving from Long Wharf in Boston or the Hingham Shipyard. See the ferry schedule posted on www.bostonislands.com.
