Peace Drum Project News - Spring 2010

Celebrating Ten Years of Inter-generational Arts

The Peace Drum Project is CAI's after-school youth leadership program that immerses Boston teens in performing and visual arts, and brings them together with elders in the community to learn from their lives and experiences. Each year, our teens interview a new group of elders, listen to their stories, and create a personalized Peace Drum for each one, reflecting a life well-lived. This year, almost all of the elders working with the teens are professional artists - thus deepening the young people's experience of art as a life-time of expression!

Artists at work

The artists participating this year include: Khalid Kodi (conceptual artist & painter), Curtis Jones (musician & storyteller), Ginny O'Neill and Tom Menihan (painters), Hakim Raquib (photographer), Gary A. Rickson (painter & musician), Susan Thompson (textile artist), Bob Walthol (poet), Anthony Williams (choreographer), and Barbara Ward Armstrong (musician & visual artist). Paul Medling, a retired minister living at Farnsworth House, is also an elder participant. The teens are learning so much from the elders stories about overcoming barriers, celebrating life's joys, their youthful adventures, family hardships, artistic inspiration, and how they gather strength from within themselves.

Peace Drum Winners & Special Thanks

AND THE WINNERS ARE ....
Thanks to all of you who supported the Peace Drum fall '09 appeal. Each person who donated was entered into a drawing to receive their very own peace drum! The five lucky winners for this year are: Franca DeVito of Quincy, Michael Prince of Waltham, Gary Rickson of Roxbury, Jeri Robinson of Dorchester, & Tiffany Candlish of Quebec, Canada.

A thousand thanks to Liz Elia for her brilliant 30-day yoga challenge that raised over $1000 for the Peace Drum! As a CAI Board member, Liz has inspired our staff and others to think about new creative ways of raising funds for the Peace Drum Project. If you have any great ideas of your own, we are all ears!

Very special thanks to The Janey Fund, and to the many individual contributors who made the project possible this year!

Thank you, also, to all of the fabulous Interns who helped with the Peace Drum and other projects this year, especially Prema Bangera, Emily Cobb, Susanna Derby, Courtney Williams, and Chris Watson for their fantastic support, ideas, and presence.

Your contribution to support The Peace Drum Project will ensure that we can continue to provide this one-of-a-kind experience to help at-risk youth transform their lives through the arts and their connection with elders in the community.
Contributions may be sent to CAI, 311 Forest Hills St., Boston, MA 02130-3605 or go to

In her own voice:
" When I graduated a few days ago, I was thinking about the people who made that step possible, and of course, the first thing I thought of was The Peace Drum. So this is not just to reflect my gratitude for receiving the Charles Holley Memorial Scholarship. It's for the overall inspiration you have given me! There was never a time that I needed help, or even just a burst of happiness, that you weren't there for me. So thank you for believing my wildest dreams might be possible!" Farah Jeune ('09 Graduate)

Elder Banner Project
The community room at Julia Martin House has been buzzing with activity on Mondays in March and April. Some elders who participated in the project in previous years are now creating a banner depicting their own stories with artist Susan Thompson! This beautiful banner will be on exhibit at our end of year awards to celebrate their accomplishment. Elder artists include Julia Martin, Gladys Facey, Bernell Stuart, and Joy Fisher, all of Jamaica Plain.
